Hugelkultur is a gardening technique where a mound constructed from decaying wood debris and other compostable biomass plant materials is later planted as a raised bed. We decided to try it out in our new raised bed. Instead of buying a load of compost or a bunch of soil, we were able to fill our 2 ft tall raised bed for Free!! We hope you enjoy the video!
As always, thanks for watching and for showing your support!
God Bless!

Hi, great video! I wrote three Lasagna Gardening books and when I was writing the first one I decided to place all my garden waste, including branches and twigs, in one place. In the fall I covered it with black plastic. I opened it in the spring and, with the exception of a few big pieces of wood, fount it decomposed enough to plant. Didn't know there was a name. At 85 I am still making new gardens so will do this with my newly downed tree. Thanks! '

Patricia Lanza, it was so wonderful to scroll down and see your comments! I found your book at the library and went to work (perhaps it was the first). As soon as I read a few pages, my world - and gardens - changed forever. It made so much sense. I began to realize that no one was tilling or double digging the forest floor. I could simulate that and plant into while the decomposition was happening. I was able to have lush amazing gardens in red clay in Virginia - outside of Wash, DC - the first year. Our home was at the mouth of the neighborhood and on a big corner lot. I grew EVERYTHING that first year, and for months people stopped to ask me how I could get that red clay that fertile so instantly, almost overnight. Most everyone grew impatiens and begonias, all in a row, with sprinklers popping up like a soldier formation. Many did not like my garden's wild cottage style, but they thought I was waved a magic wand over the earth to grow so much so fast. Thank you!

@rcook2608

@snowrideruk Don’t use fresh logs in the garden as you wouldn’t use them fresh to start a fire. Carbon isn’t available yet, but eventually it could be. Would be fine to use in place of a cinder block to hold the bed on grade.

I used to do this with my large planters, I'd walk around the yard and collect twigs, grass that clumped from mowing, leaves etc and fill the planters 1/2 way up then put in soil, who knew I was hugelkulturing…..lol, I just thought it was silly to put that much dirt in a planter. Great idea guys, totally makes sense, I always learn so much from you. God Bless

My daughter and I just set up 2 raised beds today. They are 4'x8' and 18" deep. We used small oak logs, pine needles and oak leaves. Then we topped it off with my rabbit poo/wood ash soil i've been working on all winter. We are super excited to garden this year, last year we just used pots and buckets but still had great success. With our rabbits, chickens, and new garden area this is the year for us to finally get where we have been wanting to be with our homestead.

That’s cool, I’ve seen a lot of people put logs in the bottom as a filler and never understood why. I always just figured it was cheaper than buying soil. It kind of makes perfect sense, every year that was gonna right and the top of the dirt will sink down a little so every year you can add a little nutrient rich topsoil to get everything started and it will just keep flowing down for a few years.

The cardboard will attract earth worms and worm casting which will aerate the soil and enrich the soil. It seems like it would be beneficial to break the wood into smaller pieces to aid in decomposition. Interesting to watch. I plan to try it next year. Thank for sharing about this method.

I just ran across your channel as I was trying to decide on the composition of soil I need to put into a new elevated garden. Y'all are precious and very good at this! I've heard of this method, but really enjoyed seeing exactly what y'all included in your bed. I'm sure it will work out great...can't wait to see! It looks like y'all are in Alabama. We're in a suburb of Dallas, Tx. that has become WAY too city. It was in the country when we moved here, but has way outgrown us. We have bought properties, but ended up selling them...wish we had hung on to one! We JUST turned 70 and 71. I KNOW y'all realize how smart you are getting your homestead well on the way. I usually watch Offgrid With Doug and Stacy on their channel. They are in their 50s and are wisely preparing for their latter years. They've been in process for 10 years and we have been to their first 2 Homesteading Life Conferences in Hannibal, Missouri. They're in August...not sure we'll make it this year, but y'all would love it. I have subscribed to your channel and look forward to any tips I can incorporate. I appreciate the encouragement to hire it done if necessary...just get it done...that "where there's a will, there's a way!" God Bless you and our Country, God's Country!

So glad you did this video. I have this fallen tree in the back of my property that has been rooting out for awhile. I’ve used some of it in big pots with added soil, but I am going to try this in a large horse trough, it has a drain hole so water can escape . This is going to be a trial run and I’m really hoping it works. I didn’t know that I could put sticks in it, but I always have them laying around so in the trough they go. You two work so well together and I always look forward to watching you because your content is so darn good. 'Back in the day' l was terrace gardening on a city lot ... finding soil to fill the terraces was a problem ... l did just as you show ... also filled my pathways with twigs,... anyway, in a few years, my soil was super. Stay safe ... love from the Ozarks.

I had no clue it had a name. This is how I garden and fill my pots. 3gal to 50 gal all filled from an empty property near my house. I mix and shovel it in a wheelbarrow then put it to use. Nice work.

A hugelkulture garden makes a lot of sense. It is my understanding that you will need to water it the 1st year, but starting the spring 2021, those logs will be decomposing and providing a lot of moisture to your garden. Don’t be disappointed if your results aren’t what you expect this year, wait until spring 2021 to really judge the garden. Thanks for posting.

God bless you two also. Thanks for the video...We made 2 raised beds from your design. I am so thankful to have found your channel... I will be praying for you each time I enjoy watching the content you put up. My hubby and I are from Texas in a city south of Dallas . Its always been on my heart to move to the country and start a homestead....but here in the city in my backyard...we started our first raised bed with veggies. If you have to start small, you start small. Praying for a great harvest and hoping to bless other families by sharing what we grow.

I used this method last spring and it worked amazing for me! I’m in SoCal and we are very dry. The bed stayed very moist. I didn’t have to water it very much. I can’t wait to see how yours does!!!!

One tip on how to keep the entire bed wet/moist is that you simply put a pail/bucket on the bottom of the bed every meter/yard. Just leave it there, standing up, and fill the bed just like you did. The bucket will remain in the bed, and it will keep any water trickling down into it, slowly releasing it back to the soil when needed. if they get full, the water simply seeps off over the edge and drains downwards. Yes, they are to be filled with soil ofc. They will hold water anyway. If your bed is 2 feet high and your buckets are 1 foot, you are in effect creating an artificial water table at a minimum of 1 foot below the surface. I tried this, and it works a charm. Do not punch holes in your buckets, just use as is.

Hi Guys! I really think your design is the best metal raised bed I have seen. Digging it into the ground is the best way to keep it from bowing. Thank you for taking the time share. Love the ending!
