They all sound good. No audience member would ever be able to do a blindfold test, probably no sax player either. it is all about how it feels to me. The free-blowing and the access to altissimo notes as well as bottom is what does it for me. I can find tenor mouthpieces easily, not so for alto or soprano.
@XIIMonkeysMusicGroup2 жыл бұрын
It took me forever to find the right mouthpieces on Alto and Tenor! Been through far fewer changes on Soprano and Alto. In fact, I still have my Rovner Deep V #6 I bought new in 1999 for my Soprano! I did add the Theo Wanne Series 1 Gaia in 2016 though. But the Deep V is never leaving!

I’m sure if he had the right reed for every mouthpiece in this video, he would struggle more and more to pick a favorite. Sometimes it’s best to let the reed pick the mouthpiece so that you don’t have to go around searching for the right reed. Sometimes it’s the opposite.

It’s funny that you say that the DV might have sounded the worst, but honestly from what I am hearing, that sounded the most freest of all the mouthpieces you played in this video. The microphone doesn’t lie. You could hear that things felt easier on that piece by far. DV NY also sound great, with a subtle darker sound to it. Jet was the brightest of them all. I agree that the HR* was a cleaner Meyer. HR custom dark was ok for breathier sound. Aside from the pieces, your playing was absolutely awesome! As we Minnesotans like to say, “Uff da!!” :)

I’d tried all three DVs for tenor and an HR for alto. JJs aren’t quite for me. I thought that the HR was as resistant a piece as I’ve ever played. I really liked the DV which was a bit bright and thin for me personally, and I thought the Chicago was their best. Ultimately I decided against them. Obviously, mouthpiece choice is a very personal thing, and the same piece can sound very different between two different players and horns.

Honestly for the bebop stuff that you love playing i think the HR custom dark sounded the closest to the desired Bird-like character. Also, you seemed to really "sing" the phrases with it. If you played more fusiony or modern stuff, you could go with the NY or DV.

i currently use the custom dark on my alto, it has an amazing sound and feel to it. It’s very rich in sound in the higher register and has a smoky sound in the lower register. at first altissimo was slightly harder to play consistently, but that was most likely because i hadn’t gotten used to the mouthpiece yet solid 9/10, definitely get one when you have a chance
