SAX-ZIM BOG finally gets knocked off my bucket list.

Sax-Zim Bog may be the most famous bog in the country because of the Great Gray Owls and Northern Hawk-Owls that can gather there in winter. But the invasion of Pine Grosbeaks, Evening Grosbeaks, Pine Siskins, and Common Redpolls that come in to join the resident Boreal Chickadees, Black-backed Woodpeckers and Canada Jays really warm up a cold winter day.

It was cold, but there was little wind, on the best morning, so it felt normal...or at least normal by my northern Maine standards. Most of my luggage for the trip was long underwear, so the cold was quite comfortable.

We saw 20 below on our trip a few years back but the birding was excellent. Missed only the Boreal Owl. As you say, many irruptive species. I hope you got to eat at the Wilbert Cafe on Route 53 where they had Sax-Zim Bog placemats and good food. Hope you got to Florida okay.

Ouch! I included my meal at Wilbert Cafe, but then thought otherwise and sent that part of the video to the cutting room floor. Should have left it in. The place was GREAT! I would eat there regularly if I weren't 1400 miles away!

I am a bit surprised by the orange cap. I stay away from bright colors when birding and stick to brown, green, gray, and blue.

I usually prefer a different cap, but when road birding, I favor visibility. Also, the camera has a pretty good zoom, so I don't have to crowd the birds. Plus, the feeder birds are so accustomed to people that they don't seem to care.
