@@jimcheek304 and I appreciate you. I always enjoy your videos. I’m not much of a gear guy but I enjoy learning from you and I probably should try some things because I might find a spark like you did. I play vintages horns and simple setups that haven’t changed in years but could almost definitely be improved upon. Maybe I should fly across the pond and have you help me try stuff.

I received the ligature and I have to say it fulfilled my expectations. It says on the box “It sings” and those are the best words to describe it, its not a gimmick. Whole saxophone just resonates more, easier to play whole range, smoother, deeper sound, a pleasure to play with it, its like a whole new world of sound revealed with it, a piece of a puzzle snapped into place….yeah you can laugh ok :). Maybe though, you trade a bit of focus of sound for all the richness you get. Make sure you push it downwards with a bit of a force so that it is snug on the moutpiece. If you are buying I suggest buying the full package with 4 plates cause plates make alot of difference. For me the best is solid silver with small ridges with which it shines. I play on Theo Wanne Gaia metal on both tenor and alto and the ligature fits both. On alto though Im still torn between this and TW ligature with thick brass plate. Mr Romeo thank you so much, greetings from Croatia!

Thanks for the video! It's always a challenge to speak to what is different when it is not really the sound. The sound may be different, but well within the perameters that a reed could account for if that choice wanted to be made. At the same time - I get it - the feel is different. I think you did as well as one could do trying to put words to something that is inherently intangible. At the very least, unlike a lot of products we end up buying, there is something fundamentally different about this one. The pricetag is very high. As a NYC woodwind player, the pricetag comes as no surprise

Thank you Jim. Sometimes I think we have joined some kind of musical cult! The plates remind me of the optimum ligature by VanDoren. Recently while trying a new mouthpiece and instrument are found at the basic literature that came with the instrument shooters that particular read and read the best sound. Yes you say it takes a bit of time it does we expect to hear someone playing a particular literature and that’s it it takes time to get to know a ligature, an instrument and a Reed look I suspect he would sound pretty good whatever literature you used. A lot about sound is I believe what is in your head. The great players of the past didn’t have any of this gear that we have today and yet we still admire their playing! Would they have played better on this ligature? Yes I would still like to try it! Once again Jim thank you for do you want doing - God bless you and yours - Bill - UK

So, Jim, you forgot to show us how easy it is to fit the reed and ligature. For example, if we have to change a reed between songs, what's involved. Have we got to pull out the screwdriver. And, how well does it fit various mouthpiece sizes??

I’m no pro by any means, but in my limited experience ligatures never drastically change your tone like changing a mouthpiece. What I’ve found is I like certain ligatures more for ease of use, and some do allow a more effortless playing experience. A bad ligature can feel to me like it’s choking off the reed and not allowing it to vibrate as freely as it should. It does effect the tone somewhat, but more importantly it effects the enjoyment of the playing experience. It’s like a bad reed in a box of 10. If your listening to a great player playing on it you can’t tell they’re playing on a bad reed, but as the player they’re probably hating the experience because they fell like they’re struggling to make it speak for them. Anyway, that’s just my humble take on ligatures.

Listening through monitor speakers, it sounds like is that the Uovo ligature has more projection and maybe a bit more edge. Did you feel any difference in resistance between the two ligatures? Does it hold the reed well when adjusting the mouthpiece?
@saxworldwide
@saxworldwide 2 жыл бұрын
Less resistance with the Uovo. For me it gives me more than just projection and edge - I also get an extra fullness. Once you have the screw set right for your mouthpiece it just slips on to the right tightness and the reed doesn't move. Jim

To be honest, I don't hear any difference. Only see, it looks like whistle for cobras. So, next snake oil in big box. I don't say that progress is not needed, but all of us look at old artist with old gear including old 2-screws ligatures and we all want to play and sound like they. I havwe 50 years old Yanagisawa T5, 50 years old Dukoff D9 and 50 years old original ligature. But I play like beginner and I am 100% sure, that I would play and sound like beginner with P.Mauriat and Theo Wanne and super heavy screw holding the neck and absolute special next generation ligature. Because it is in player, not in gear. Even after 50 years of daily practice I won't play like Coltrane, but like me after 50 years. But if someone believes that these toys will help him, let him move on.

As a ligature maker, I would say that a ligature usually does not drastically change your sound but makes a nice adjustment. But I had a trial session with Jean Pierre Baraglioli once, trying the same shape with 2 different materials. One was a clear no, the other was almost there. We had the same judgement. So a ligature may improve your sound, but the important point is that you enjoy playing your instrument.
@ichbinmartin
@ichbinmartin 2 жыл бұрын
I agree, better gear may adjust your sound. I started on Otto Link Tone Edge, but I had too dark sound. Then I tried Dukoff, much brighter sound and love on first whistle. After 2 years I can hear some difference, but very small. More is about comfort and personal feeling than about produced sound with special nuances. But I never returned to OLTE, I like the narrow shape of metal mouthpiece. I just don't believe that one more screw on the ligature or funny piece of metal attached to moutpiece and neck with rubber will make my sound better. There are only 2 things, what can make my sound and play better: talent and systematic approach. But I am not talented and lazy and have also another hobbies and duties. When I started to learn, I thought that some special gear will help me to be better. Now I know, that my current gear is far far more than is equal to my skills. But I like it because it has soul and history ;)

@@pneumasax then is the video addressed to you. go, buy and enjoy! ;) but please, try to explain, how it is possible, that old artists have had old handmade saxophones, mouthpieces ligatures and all. computers, micrometers, cnc machines did not exist yet. and all of them used the cheapest 2-screws ligature, sometimes was the gear in really bad condition (because they did not have money for repair or for better) and the most important, best recording devices of their times were literally hundred years behind today's phone. not speaking about quality of the analog recordings after all the years. and every sax player says they they sound perfectly. why?

The ligature looks like nothing else. Very fancy. The packaging is kind of over the top, they could have put this ligature in a plastic bag. I really noticed no difference soundwise between the 2 different ligatures, in term of being a listener. However the player may feel a difference in terms of overall response.

If I decide to drop close to $300 usd I wouldn't mind having one... is it going to change anything. No. But what it does if it gives you an extra feeling and if it gives you more joy in playing then it is worth it. But anybody listening is not going to say Wow what a difference, not happening. To my 50+ year old ears on my $15,000 audio equipment playing through KZbin there isn't any change. But sure would want one.

The "boutique sax gear" market is frankly hilarious and shock full of pseudo science. I think GAS in the saxophone community is very interesting, given that our instrument is 95%> dependent on the player. Gear has so little to do with our sound. GAS prone hobbyists with big wallets are important though for keeping the market alive.
