Hi, Alistair- I'm a lifelong professional pianist (now semi-retired), and have become fascinated by your presentation of the Aerophone series. My only personal experience with wind instruments was a brief introduction to the RECORDER which was mandated as part of my Orff-Schulwerk teacher training (perhaps 20 years ago). I've decided that- assuming I can FIND my old recorder and and summon the patience to practice on it for a few weeks- I will reward myself with the purchase of an Aerophone. I was going to start with the AE-01, but I've "upped the ante" to an Aerophone Go. Wish me luck!

Hi. I think the GO probably would suite well. There are quite a few folks using the Aerophone as a practice tool. Of course things like the palm keys and octave keys are going to feel slightly different but they are between different makes of saxophone anyway. Just remember the whole mouth/throat response won't be the same as an acoustic sax. There is lip response on the GO which I think is slightly better than on the AE-10.

Which on is more preferable or both are pretty equal? Best regards, Andrey
@isax.academy5 жыл бұрын
A tricky choice. The AE-10 certainly gives you more options and better sound. The keys are a more comfortable but won’t be exactly like your sax of course. The AE-GO feels a bit more lithe a soprano sax to me with palm keys a bit closer to the body of the instrument. I’d really advise you go and try them both in your hands if possible.

Mr Parnell, excellent video. If I am learning sax from scratch, is there any real advantage to start with the bigger one? Or for which reason one would upgrade from the smaller to bigger, being an intermediate player for instance?

I’d say the Aerophone GO would be perfect for a beginner. Easier to understand the settings and fun to play with the app. As your technique improves or you want to delve deeper into midi and programming your own sounds the AE-10 is a good upgrade. I’d say you’d get at least a good two years from the GO before you’d upgrade and you’d make a better start with a more straight forward instrument.

@isax.academy5 жыл бұрын
+Johnny Parker Hi there. Both will work very similarly as a midi controller. You should be aware though that you might have to do some tweaking of the sounds on any external device to get the best response. I have very little knowledge of those machines but I wouldn’t think they are the ideal modules for midi wind control. Wind synth are more suited to expressive sustained sounds that can be shaped with breath.

Hi Alistair. I've finally bought a Go and I have to say that so far I'm really impressed with it. I previously bought an Akai EWI USB but when it arrived it had something loose rattling around inside. Not very good so it got returned and I got a refund. I also didn't like the touch sensitive type of keys on EWI, especially as I'm learning the alto saxophone. It's nice having the built in speaker on the GO but obviously the best sound can be achieved by going through audio software. I've got a Windows 10 PC but have no idea which software to use or how then to connect the GO (using USB) and get it all working. If you or anyone could advise I'd be very grateful. Thanks

Hi David. I’m afraid I haven’t used a PC for many years. I hope someone else here can offer some help. I’ve seen some excellent KZbin videos with people using PCs and windsynths so I’m sure you can do it. Just to be clear by connecting to a computer you are dealing with software sounds from the computer. The Aerophone just works as a controller. You wouldn’t use a PC to play the sounds from the Aerophone to improve it’s sound. Check out Albelton Live. They are currently doing 90 day free trial I believe and you should find some videos to help get started.

On those high notes I've been using the low D finger to stabilize like with recorders. Separately, the octave keys are not as distinguished as I'd like, maybe need to get used to it, been a tenor player for many years, but I am so excited about the AE-10, huge breakthrough. Thanks for your great videos, super helpful.
@TooSlowTube6 жыл бұрын
FWIW, I've built up the 1st octave up key on my AE-10, by cutting a crescent of self adhesive cork - about 2mm or 1/16" thick. I put some dense self adhesive dense foam on the 1st octave down key too... I'm not sure which I prefer, but the foam I found is a little bit thinner than the cork.
@markm.17786 жыл бұрын
How are you liking that at this point, I'm getting more use to the octave keys, the 1st up and down are a little at an angle not straight up and down, the 2nd octave key is straight up, I agree that they are too similar in surface feel and tightly close together
@TooSlowTube6 жыл бұрын
Did you mean the Aerophone as a whole, or just putting things on the octave keys? I can recommend doing that, though I might start again with non self adhesive cork, and contact cement, because the gum on the sort I've used is a bit too soft for hot weather - it tends to move around. If you meant the other thing; that's more of an essay question... I'm frustrated by the pitch bend only being down, not up. There's provision for both, but they disabled the option of up. Clearly, they don't know a hell of a lot about playing saxophones, or other reed instruments. Lately, I've been using it as a MIDI controller, which frustrates me because I need a powered converter, to get the missing DIN socket, which I feel it should always have had. I do like having the palm keys, though I wish the fingering implementation was a bit more complete. I guess they had their reasons, but it's not like playing a sax; it's like sticking to a fingering chart for complete beginners, with no alternate fingerings. You can add ten, but that doesn't even scratch the surface. I haven't put on the new update yet, partly because it just seems to be new sounds, and tweaks to the old ones. I will eventually, but that doesn't really excite me. I'd rather have had some improvements to how it works - pitch bend and fingering.

I have been planing on buying one or the other for both practicing and for use on stage and composing my pieces with better ease but at this point im torn between the two. Which would you recommend?
@isax.academy5 жыл бұрын
+xxxDeafManxxx This is of course a matter of personal taste. For me the most significant difference between them is that the Aerophone will much easier to get playing straight away. The EWI will take some time to master and many people find it’s just too hard to persist with. For me the feel of the Akai is better and some of the synth sounds are better on the EWI 4000s but as far as other sounds the Aerophone wins every time for me. The Roland is also much easier to navigate through settings and of course there are still updates and improvements being issued. This is not the case with the Akai sadly.

Hello Alistair, great review! Do you recommend the Go for absolute beginners in wind instruments?
@TooSlowTube6 жыл бұрын
I'd recommend the penny whistle - unless the noise is an issue. I never understood why we were all forced to play descant recorders at school. They're needlessly complicated, for a beginner, and require really good breath control to make a good sound. A penny whistle in D plays tunes in D and G easily, and other keys at a push. For playing tunes in more keys, buy more whistles :)
@drk18256 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot! Greetings from germany
@TooSlowTube6 жыл бұрын
You're welcome, Dr K. Since you're in germany, I'd suggest getting Thomann's plastic whistles - there's a D and a C, which are both good, and very cheap. A C whistle plays a bit like a Bb sax, without the keys below low D... It's a little different because the whistle's natural scale is D (D E F# G A B C#), like an oboe, but the same keys / fingerings on a sax play D E F G A B C#. It's easier to switch between the two than you might expect though. The brain adjusts. A D whistle doesn't transpose - the notes are named the same as on a flute or a piano, which is one reason why people start with that one. The C is a good second one though.

On my old WX7 you could set up a note as drone - click on a button to hold that note throughout the piece you want to play and then play over it (worked really well with bagpipe sounds), Can you do that on the Go?

I don't think so. Not on the instrument itself. I do this through MainStage on my computer.

@isax.academy6 жыл бұрын
Hi. Yes it works with GarageBand and should work with Sampletank although I’ve not tried it. Remember that the sounds would need to be adjusted to respond to breath control to get the best out of them or you could possibly set the GO to send Expression to control the volume.

How’s the Go as a controller? I know you posted an awesome video using the 10 controlling Sample Modeling’s The Trumpet. I assume it won’t have all the joystick controls... but plugging the 05 via USB, will one still have a good experience?
@isax.academy6 жыл бұрын
Yes it works very well. USB connection works the same as the AE10 but without the extra controls and note range of course. A slight latency over Bluetooth but I’ve found it to be very playable on my setup with a fast Mac and a good audio interface.

Hai there. I've seen your videos about EWI lesson series. Now I'm considering to buy ewi aerophone for the purpose silent-training (using headphone) and just jamming with my little band. Which one is the most suit for me, ewi4000s, ewi 5000, roland ae 10, roland go ae 05?
@isax.academy6 жыл бұрын
+risang android That’s a very difficult question to answer because it depends on many factors. The short answer is if you haven’t played a wind synth before and you want to get going quickly and easily and have an instrument close to the feel of a saxophone then go for the Aerophone. Which Aerophone is then down to cost. If you can afford the AE-10 go for that but if you’re not sure you want to invest that much money or you’d rather try it out for a while then go for the GO.

Could you please let me know if there is latency and how much when using the Bluetooth feature with a cell phone. Thanks and keep up the great work!
@bueso9436 жыл бұрын
there is a latency, more than a 10th of a second, but at random, sometimes with bluetooth but also the same with a USB-cable. then i had practically no latency with a cable.. the app is not really functional. BTconnection is at random and requires localisation (?). The mp3-list appears in chinese characters and you cant choose the directories of your tunes. so you get also your language courses in the list... sorry, Roland, I think there is still some work for you to do.

Can the bluetooth midi be used with OSX or Windows? I bought Roland's Ax-Edge because they advertised bluetooth midi and I wanted to use it for Logic Pro X, but found out the bluetooth midi only works on mobile devices despite their failure to provide a disclaimer for this horrendous oversight of a lack of vital feature. Does the have Aerophone Go have same issue, or can I use the bluetooth midi with computer DAWs like we should have been able to do with the Ax-Edge? Also, wish they would give us a controller with the features of the ae-10 but with bluetooth. It's surprising the beginner model has some more modern features, when it's so lacking in other areas (no proper pitch-bend controls is almost a deal-killer).

+Joseph Holliday Hi. My AE GO shows up in OSX just like any other Bluetooth device. I’ve used it many times with Mainstage and Logic on the Mac. I have shown this on my videos. I’m very surprised If the Edge doesn’t do the same. Personally I have resavations about using Bluetooth live in any gig situation. It’s ok for foot switches and stuff but I prefer a wired connection every time despite the inconvenience.
@DocHollidayGames5 жыл бұрын
@@isax.academy Thanks for the response. I can get the Ax-Edge to connect as a midi device in Midi Studio and all 16 channels show as active for send and receive, but neither of my DAWs recognize any CC sends or keypresses (Logic Pro X and Ableton Live). I have other bluetooth midi devices that work as expected. I only use midi bluetooth for recording for convenience so I can relax on the couch while recording parts while not being tethered to the MacBook. For live scenarios, I tend to stay wired.

Hi Alistair, can the octave ring notifications be turned off and if so how would someone know what octave level they are on?
@isax.academy6 жыл бұрын
Hi Phil. So those beeps only happen when you are making adjustments to the settings and I think they are only through the internal speakers so you can turn the volume down or off. . I don’t think they go through the audio out as well. You can make those adjustments via the app as well so there is a visual feedback there. Hope that helps.

Hi, Ali, I am facing difficulties in using the sound in the Roland Aerophone GO plus. I have followed the Roland Support Channel to set up and use Bluetooth function of iPhone 6 Plus to link up with GO! I also use cable for line in my iPhone and a portable speaker! Would you enlighten me on how to apply the tones in GO Plus? Any trick to overcome the problem?
@isax.academy6 жыл бұрын
Hi. You can’t apply the tones to the Aerophone GO. In other words you don’t upload or add the sounds to the GO. You have to play those additional sounds through the phone. So you have to be connected to the phone to use those sounds. I hope that’s clear?
@lamusique80856 жыл бұрын
I knew that! But, there is no sound from the phone although I connected the phone and blew the Aerophone GO after click into the app and selected either one of the sounds. I tried to use a headphone or speaker to connect with iPhone for ensuring whether there is any sound from my blowing but it doesn’t work!
@isax.academy6 жыл бұрын
Sorry I misunderstood your question. Perhaps this needs a step by step approach. Can you successfully play a mp3 track from within the GO app? Do you hear sound? Are you sure the Bluetooth connection is working? If you can select a sound in the tone lists it’s connected. Have you changed any settings for the breath output in the settings? Thus should be set to CC02 which is breath. Let me know how you get on.
