How did I let this happen? I have become that guy. I've heard stories like this in the past, and I laughed wondering "how stupid must you be in order for this to happen?" Today, I have become that guy.

A friend of mine did this exact same thing to his trumpet, but it was in a VERY dark location. Same thing, though, a friend came up to say good night, drive carefully, and as my friend backed up, he heard it and KNEW what he had done. And it was his horn that he had saved up and sacrificed for while in high school, about 45 years before. He LOVED that horn. And drove over it lengthwise. He ended up sending it back to the factory, who pounded it out, but had to replace the bell, it was too far gone. Cost him far more than the horn originally did. But he was back to playing it the last time I gigged with him. It's amazing what you can fix. Or should I say, you can pay very skilled people a lot of money to do amazing things and fix the messes you make. And thank whoever for that.

Regret is an inevitable consequence of life. If the metal is still there, the horn can be fixed. I picked up my case, was talking while packing up and didn’t fasten the latches. Rolled my Mk VI tenor out of the case onto the floor. I couldn’t eat for 3 days until I got it to Paul Maslin’s shop in Evanston. Paul repaired it, been playing it for 25 years without thinking of the incident.

This has happened to me. I felt completely hopeless. What was encouraging is that after my tech managed to fix the banana body and everything ....my Alto became better than ever. It just speaks even better.... I hope you get it back really really soon!!!

I did the exact same thing, except my sax was more off to the side, so I was able to drive off without hitting it. After I drove all the way home I realized what I had done, and I went back to where I had left it, but it was gone. Bottom line, about 6 months later a police detective called me and said that it had turned up at a local pawn shop, where I was able to buy it back for 450 bucks. Yippee

I was a bass clarinet player back in high school and on my way back from a competition my precious Apollo fell out from under the bus in the middle of an intersection and got plastered by a mini van. Some kids from another school actually got it and brought it to me the next day. It was horrible. It was in bits of metal and wood. Very sad day. The lead art teacher at the school got it and made a modern art piece out of it that now sits above the director's piano in his office.

Ken Beason is a bad ass. Used to live nearby and my teacher got all his horns done by him. He told me one local marching band had a horn they gave the bassoon players just to hold to look nice because it was unplayable -- had fallen through the bleachers onto concrete. Turns out it was a selmer mark 6. My teacher said he bought it from the band and had Ken fix it up -- the story goes that Ken had to get more metal to put on the horn or something but I guess he did the metallurgy himself?? Unreal. Anyway, the horn he showed me played fantastically. Idk how much of the story is true though

In high school, my tuba friend and I were going to his car after a rehearsal. We were loading his car and then some friends came up to us to chat. I got into the car while he was still chatting away with them. So he gets in the car, puts it in reverse, and starts driving. Almost immediately, the passenger side of the car is riding a bit higher than the other. I look at him like "what the heck happened," and I'll never forget his "oh SHIT" face in that moment. He totally flattened his tuba to the point of it looking like an enlarged silver pancake. Long story short, you're not alone Nate 😂

Wholly cow, I take my horn to Ken! He's a beast, man. I dropped my VI a few years ago and the body of the horn actually dented towards the bow. He totally fixed it and more that I didn't even know was wrong. Tell him hey for me if you feel thusly inclined!

I have experienced a similar trauma but subtle.... I was tired after a gig and went home and went to bed... I was totally relaxed as I listened to the torrential downpour outside. i woke up the next morning and went about my day and when I decided to practice I looked everywhere for my sax. I thought "Oh I left it in the car" Went outside and the sax was behind the car! I thought " "Its okay" the case was closed. Opened the sax to find it completely soaked on the inside! I probably stared at that for about 20 minutes! That horn never recovered from being totally inundated with water! I have since bought another alto and my students used that as a backup horn!

Me too! Oh the eternal ignominy!!! Beautiful early 60s Mk VI tenor. It was a write off. The 1962 Mk VI I replaced it with stayed with me for the next 40 years. I then found a 64 MkVI 'closet queen' and sold my dear old friend of 40 years as a result on pure penury. The new baby pretty well plays itself. X

Solidarity. A few months ago I did something similar. Was leaving a friend's house. Left my best sax (also since 10th grade) by my trunk while putting something in the passengers seat. Get in car and drive away. Realize halfway home my sax is not in the car. Rush back, it's gone from the curb. Luckily my friend has security cams, discovered her neighbor drove by and picked it up and we got it back right away. I smoked a cigarette while rocking back and forth shaking from the trauma.

After a long gig a sax player around here put his sax on the roof of his car. As he was leaving the lot it fell off AND he ran it over during a K turn. Apparently it did get completely repaired. Stories like these is why I love having the ability to put my bass trombone in a pelican case
