I think you started your channel right around the same time I picked up a sax as my third instrument (piano, guitar). I knew you were going to be successful. You had it all going on - experience as a player, good use of language, enthusiasm, attention to detail, structure. Look at that subscriber count. I wouldn't have imagined this number of sax players world wide. Something to consider - you have strong speech skills enabling you to speak fast. Although fellows like myself appreciate it, you might if you don't do it already - from time to time remind folks about the settings feature to slow down the speed of video delivery for those with English as a second language. Keep up the good work Jamie!

What and how to practise is something I struggle with. There is so much I need to learn that I feel overwhelmed. I’ve tried to follow others’ practice recommendations in the past and ended up spending half an hour or more on what was supposed to be a 10-minute warmup, for example. When you are just learning something, it takes way longer to play than when you are running through something you already know. I can’t spend only a few minutes on it and then move on to the next thing. That said, the advice in your video is excellent. I don’t think I’ve seen another video on this topic that is as detailed, so thank you! I very much appreciate your video and accompanying pdfs.

Very Good Jamie!! I do most of that except I practice for 45 min a day and may spend most of my time on 1 or 2 things , for example scales and altissmo on one day , then next day on songs and solo's and transcription working with the app sibelius. When I am not practicing I am studying your material in your fantastic program 'Total Tone Mastery'' and all of the material that is in your " Get Your Sax Together" Program. All of which has helped my learning of Music theory tremendously !!! Thank you for sharing all of your wisdom!!

Your comment regarding the tuning was very important. I think I was slightly too focused on it. Now...with your comment, I realize that I play (relatively speaking) in tune. However, matching the overtone notes with the regular fingering is interestingly difficult to do. And I have no intentionnof obsessiong on THAT. You DO realize there are many different ways that one could become crazy practising saxophone. And, I now realize that picking up an alto after only playing tenor is a freak out. There simply is no doubt that it's a different animal. I can have fun with it up to a point. It sure seems to require less air, but I feel way less adequate on that alto.
@GetYourSaxTogether Жыл бұрын
It’s hard to switch from alto to tenor I think.

It Hi Jamie it was really nice to “ spend”. 3 evenings with you.Q and A was exciting.I have a question if you don’t mind. I have a sax book “Daily studies for all saxophones”,scales,arpeggios, tuning etudes so the whole 9 yards. Could you suggest a method how to practice. For example if I’m able to play ,let’s say a scale or arpeggios steady 80-100 BPM,do I practice until I can play faster 120-150 or even faster. Or choose another scale or arpeggios? Should I learn all the exercises in steady medium tempo and when I finish starting to change tempo or not to step further until I’m not perfect with one scale or arpeggios etc.?

Re: technique. I'm never sure how to use this time best. I used your brilliant scales worksheets for a number of weeks but if I'm meant to learn all 4 sheets in all keys I've used up my whole 6 or 10 mins before I'm through just the majors. If I want to get to other techniques I'm out of luck. How do you suggest breaking up that section so I'm not bailing on tougher keys or less interesting scales but still get a bit of everything into my technique improvement?
@GetYourSaxTogether Жыл бұрын
That’s a good question! It just goes to show that limited practice time can only limit progress. BUT…at least you know you’re getting the maximum possible improvement for the time you’ve got if you follow this plan. I’ll say this - if you play a few scales very well that’s more valuable than playing loads badly. As you learn to play a few fluently and quickly that leaves more time to work on the next ones to do slowly. They then get quicker, and so on until before you know it you can play all your majors quickly and fluently leaving more time for the next scale type etc etc. I’m also tempted to say that if you can’t play your major scales yet there’s not much other technique stuff you should be worrying about, frankly. It’s saxophone 101 imho.
@ollystevens9201 Жыл бұрын
Thanks Jamie. Another cracking video. I believe in the little and often philosophy. However the percentage breakdown hinders me if you have only 15mins that day. Presumably ok to spread these five stages over a few days rather than in a one-er? Main point is to pick up the sax each day and do at least something? Or would you advise say a more structured 4x45 minutes a week (say?). Appreciate everyone’s different but wondered if you had any input on that?

You forgot #6: Check out any new videos Jamie has put out (or is that stating the obvious too much ?!? ) Anyway, my rule of thumb is: Practice *every* day, if even only for 5 minutes (and practice in earnest.) Not only make it a daily routine; but make it a habit. It is much harder to pick up the sax than it is to continue the session. ( Also realise: Any two practice days in a row is the forming of a habit of *not* practicing.) Stepping down from the soapbox now...

I’ve had better luck finding a moment to practice when my horn is ready to go on my sax stand. Keeping my sax on a stand gives me more time for practicing and I’m compelled to just pick it up and play even for a few minutes. It’s energizing to take a “practice break” and play for 5-10 minutes a few times during the day when I can’t carve out a larger block of time to practice. Now that I have Jamie’s practice time chart, I can check off a section during each mini practice break. This is a great framework to use in a practice journal. Thanks, Jamie!
