Very interesting and useful ... and even surprising when you suggested using ordinary paper as a gentle abrasive. I'm new to using a fairly basic reed instrument so this demo has been extremely handy. Thanks.

Hey Thanks! Never heard of the suction and reed softening methods. Much appreciated!! BTW, I found a reed tip cutter infer the lining of my original sax case (Selmer SA80 ii) along with a little screwdriver. The reed cutter is perfect for those tips that get split. What is your opinion?
@shaggybreeks11 жыл бұрын
Yes, but I don't know if it's in your area of expertise. I'm interested in getting an old Buescher TT alto in top playing condition, and there's more to it than just replacing the pads! Specifically, how to regulate the action. Replacing the pads is a no-brainer, but getting them to close properly, and getting the feel of the keys right, so they're responsive and "snappy". It's a bit of a puzzle where to start and how to go about it. Materials? Procedures?

I think the reed cutter is great. My experience with them is that you might get some more life out of a reed. Once you cut it though, it doesn't last too long. Maybe one gig for me.

A reed that has once warped will almost 100% of the time warp again. To avoid it(yeah some reeds will still warp) you need to let only the vamp part get wet and you need to balancing it very well before you start to break it in. That way the reed will break-in in a even fashion(no part of the reed is vibrating more than the other that causes tension and much quicker wear of the reed),be much more stable from day to day and last much longer.

I know that there are synthetic reeds these days. Any level of predictability / dependability to a box of those, rather than old fashioned "bamboo" (?) reeds?
@psianipar11 жыл бұрын
wow. this is a good refference for me. i'll try it ^^. but i recently bought a Rico Plasticover Reeds. for Alto Sax. there is a black layer above the reeds. what do you think. should i still sand paper the reed?
@Musiceducationforall11 жыл бұрын
I would not recommend sanding down a Rico Plasticover reed. Chances are you would be fine, but sanding down plastic and putting that in your mouth? Probably not a good idea. I actually did that once and the Plasticover reed lasted a very short time. Good luck!
@psianipar11 жыл бұрын
hahaha. i actually got a box of plasticover reeds. about 5 of em. Sooo.... i tried on your suggestion. the one to put the reed on a paper and rubbing it a little till it's smooth. and yes. i am not overdoing it. but it came out just fine. i played it out on a gig yesterday. and it sounds great. maybe i'm just lucky. hahaah

Question, does the reed have to be soft/wet in order to make a sound? Just bought a sax today and im not getting any sound yet.
@ivarwesterberg62128 жыл бұрын
xTempest yes! It's really hard to play with a brand new reed straight out of the box. You can either stick the reed in your mouth or in a glass of water. Good luck with the playing!

Thanks! I finally made a sound already, took me like 30 mins to get it lol. Now I gotta learn the notes, thanks!

you put your ligature on wrong
@Musiceducationforall11 жыл бұрын
It looks wrong! Yes. Mostly the treads are the other way. Not with this ligature. Almost always you would be correct. Not this time though. The ligature is designed to have the screws on top. Thanks for pointing that out though. Best of luck with your music and I hope you find some other useful info on our channel. Cheers, Marc
@Locotona2211 жыл бұрын
Just a little tip for you Krishna. The screw for a ligature will always be on the right side in which you would tighten with your right hand. That's how you will always know the way ligatures should face. That's pretty much the rule of thumb for simple ligatures as well as vintage. The new, high tech ones vary on the manufacturer such as the Francois Louis Ligs and the Claude Lakey Compass Ligs. Those tighten on the bottom.

U put ur ligature on wrong
@marcelosoto-quiroga19659 жыл бұрын
+Veronica Nieto Nope. That type of ligature is called "inverted" just because it should be installed that way, i.e. screws on top. They put pressure more evenly on the reed.
