darn I loved the spoken word introduction... to the record... it was only a few lines but Max was having an anxiety about it... it went huh... and the record begins with a song of rebellion... yes that's it

I’m 28 now and remember listening to this 10+ years ago and not understanding most of the metaphors... I still don’t. Pretty sure we didn’t deserve Say Anything! Still don’t.

took me like 3 years in the humanities to realize how nuanced and insightful Max is.

Metaphors? It was literally written as a punk rock musical. It's telling a story that may often be literal. You can definitely interpret the way you see it tho since he abandoned the musical aspect.

@@Radb707 the titular belt is a symbolic metaphor imo, parsible. recurrent themes in this track of different garb, in fact even just things that hold the body. the belt, the 'cart'. the wool of sheep, the bath of sweat, and the crow-feathery gown of downy snow. then 'we took off our clothes' so things that we're held by we replace with weapons that we hold against who when they can't leverage us hunt and persecute us. in broad strokes punk-rock narrative but this album's a miracle of construction

I get that. I'm just saying that they will play what they wanna play and you can't change that. There's no point in posting trivial discontent when there's nothing you can do about it. That's just my opinion.

@vbbghyf I read that it was about how labels trying to sign him but if he agreed he'd have to change either lyrics, music, his look, etc. But as we know, Max wouldn't agree to such a thing. I consider the ending his big F you to the record labels.
