The part where you mentioned holding up your hair to a white sheet of paper; the only thing I wanted to comment on is that you may have better luck holding it against a gray sheet of paper. As an artist, we typically use gray as a background and base for figures because it allows us to determine the true color that we're using. White or black backgrounds/figure bases distort true color because there is too much brightness or too much contrast. Gray is in the middle, therefore showing us the true colors that we're using. Just wanted to share lol. Thank you for making these helpful videos!! Have a wonderful day love! :)

After yet another disappointing “full foil” with my hairdresser who used to do my hair well (she left me with a large brunette headband behind my bangs), I got exasperated and decided to go at adding a few more highlights myself. Redken flash lift failed me months ago but Schwarzkopf lightener & developer (30 vl) is a dream!! A good bleach FINALLY lifted my naturally very dark hair perfectly at home!! They came out lighter than her highlights and I didn’t even need a toner. Though I’m gonna start a collection of Redken Shades EQ so I have more options. I’m attributing the lightening power to the bluish purple tint. Your knowledge has been priceless, Brad.💕

Sometimes the retail workers at Sally’s have no clue what on earth they are selling. I recently went there and was led in a very strange direction and none of my questions could be answered, so the staff person simply read labels of products to tell me what I needed. In the end I tried to remember what Brad had said, so definitely be aware and listen to Brad. 💕
@vacantshadows3 жыл бұрын
A lot of us do read labels bc we don't remember exactly what a specific brand says. A lot of brands are different too, and I want to make sure I'm telling the person the correct ratios to mix. We're not all hairstylists but for my store, I can say we are pretty knowledgeable and yeah still learning but that's kinda how it goes just in life lol. I try to stop ppl from ruining their hair and usually suggest conditioner or a treatment when I feel their hair could use it. But yeah it is a job like target or sm I guess, I have 0 retail experience and they let me work there still
@vacantshadows3 жыл бұрын
@MommyS I work at sallys and I don't think you'd need to tone your hair to put color over it, I'd suggest just getting it light enough for your color to take if that's what you're going for. But for t14, that's a pale ash blonde so you'd need to go pretty light for it to be able to tone your hair. I'm not sure if you're wanting lvl 8 or lvl 10 hair. For 8, just go with the color and for 10 use the toner once you're light enough.
@JessicaBrooks01113 жыл бұрын
MommyS oh no! I hope it’s growing back quickly! I’ve been there before. Big chunks of hair broke off before I learned what toner was.
@JessicaBrooks01113 жыл бұрын
Scarlett I understand you are trying to help customers not ruin our hair, and I appreciate that. I have ruined mine before, but that was all my fault. It is good for staff to know some concepts about hair bleaching, which it sounds like you do. That’s very helpful! In the situation I was in, the woman didn’t know what the toners were so I felt bad wasting her time when I can read the packaging and look it up myself.

A good tip too: Go to Sally's and match your hair shade to an existing hair swatch. The blondes are colored 8, 9, and 10. They also tell you the undertones of that particular swatch. If you match up to an 8G swatch, that means dark blonde with gold (orange tones). Get a blue based level 8 toner. This way, you won't have to guess, buy the wrong thing, and end up with raunchy hair. This works for other colors too. Some even have recommended toners on the back of the box!!!!

I went to a salon and they refused to do my hair saying they are too damaged. I wanted to go from burgundy red (already faded a bit) to my natural ash blonde, possibly with ombre into blonde if at all possible. They said my hair will break if they try to get rid of this color. So I decided to do it myself. Bought a color remover and it got rid of ALL of the red without damaging my hair at all. If I can do it at home, then why do they refuse to do it in the salon? I will redo the color remover to get rid of last bits of orange and then either look for a toner myself and then dye, or go to different hairdresser who won't have to use bleach, just tone it and dye it. Job done.

Accurate! Most of the women working at Sally’s or any beauty supply store including Cosmoprof are either estheticians (meaning they NEVER studied hair in school- cosmetologists do), or they don’t have any sort of formal training for the beauty industry. This is coming from a cosmetology student.

3 out of the 4 employees at my Sally store are professionals and have been doing hair for 30+ years. That’s not to say that they won’t hire people with no prior experience, they do, BUT it’s not fair to put that label on every Sally employee. We DO have to go through an extensive 2-week training about color theory, different types of bleaches/dyes/toners, and after-hair-care.

@@hunnybee271 I agree! It’s just to get people out on the floors. After that, there are monthly training activities we have to sit through and interact with in the office, and we get tested twice a year on our overall knowledge. If there’s an area we’re lacking in, we have to refresh with learning courses. Not all employees are gonna be as motivated to learn, but at least in my case, I make sure I ask my coworkers questions if there’s ever an issue I can’t help a customer with, that way I understand how/why things work. You’re right though, 2 weeks isn’t nearly enough to cover everything, and I don’t think Sally employees should be giving concrete advice if they really aren’t sure. I don’t have a problem telling customers I honestly don’t know, and a lot of them appreciate my honesty so I don’t misguide them and ruin their hair.

Brad's explanation is an A+++! Love, love love! NOW, I finally understand the chemistry and science of how I get the results that I get with my hair. About 4 years ago, after paying around $150 to have my hair professionally bleached platinum, I decided to do it myself. I've been bleaching my hair platinum blonde since then with perfect results every time (except once during COVID when I - oops! - in a hurry, processed my hair too fast and my hair broke off in spaghetti-like strings - Brad has a video on this which I wish I had watched, lol!). Note that before I did it myself for the first time, I watched several (many!) videos on KZbin and am able to get the snowy, white result with very little damage. It takes 2 days of bleaching with lots of coconut and argan oil to start off each bleaching session. I finish off with a "flash" ash toner - yes, T18 (meaning I leave it on max for 2 minutes). Note: my hair is very short such that in 1.5 months I cut all the platinum off and begin again with virgin, dark ash blonde hair.
@justsue87304 жыл бұрын
I would pay a professional to bleach my hair as I'm after ash or silver hair from dark hair. I was refused by all hair dressers saying it will break etc. I did mine, bleached it twice and now I'm about 9 or 10. Waiting to tone it. My hair is fine, still soft and healthy.

It has been a CHALLENGE to say the least but I have some great players helping me out. I have been a deep brunette/black haired individual my whole life. This being said, because I have gone white, I’ve been covering the white growth with brown/black color every two weeks for the last 12 years at least. Somehow, the disaster that happened, I went from black to mostly yellow with an orange halo 😂 1k and 2 stylists later, I have a shade that’s maybe one session away from platinum. I’m had to get keratin last time and I’m giving it about 2 months to recover. I hope to be Storm white by fall 2023. My stylist has me with some great purple, sulfate free shampoo which I only use once a week. I stopped using olaplex (sorrry 😢) using vitaplex once a week and then Carol’s daughter almond milk deep conditioner alternating. I only wash twice a week. I use some leave in as well. I am stunned still. I have been Kim K dark skin, eyes and hair my entire life. I am now blonde!! Almost white blonde and still have a thick head of below shoulder blade length hair. @@gingerscozycrochet toner more or less neutralizes unwanted tones in your hair (orange/brassy color, yellow, so on) that happen when you bleach it. It's kinda like a top coat for hair lol. @anne-marie80184 жыл бұрын
@@gingerscozycrochet I feel for you! But before you tone you need color correction. Toning is for when you have finished bleaching and it's overall as light as you want it, but it's too yellow or too orange. if it''s not too yellow or too orange, you don't need toner. Toner is going to turn light hair icy platinum. That's my understanding. I'm not a pro unless you count Brads Mondo Hair University From Home During Quarantine. If your hair needs a break, if it was me, I'd put on a semi in a brown tone that matches your darkest hair but a little lighter, or whatever looks like it will help the colors blend. It's supposed to wash out quickly, so it probably won't hurt anything and should make your hair more healthy. I said lighter because your hair might take a lot of the color in places like the ends where it's more porous. If you use a permanent color it's going to be really hard to bleach it out later, or that was my experience. Once you know a color you like you could try a demi so it lasts a little longer. Also, realize that I don't know anything of significance, so use your own knowledge and intuition. Good luck! it's awful to feel like your hair looks bad.

Would you use the Wella toners at all? Could you do a video with examples of the different wella toners and what hair each would work best on? I think we would all love a little guidance in this area 🙏

there was always something so charming about you that I couldn’t put my finger on until you winked in this video 😭 you remind me of damon from vampire diaries. Idk why but you do!

You are not alone in your observation! They have similar eyes and similar mouth. Ian has a stronger jawline. Would be fun to have Brad as a guest character on one of Ian's shows. 😁

Someone explain to me how over the years Ive gone to multiple hair salons, paid 100s at a time for platinum blonde and never once had them use a toner or suggest it. Not shockingly Ive never had a truely happy hair coloring either. Always just looks yellow blonde. Not platinum

I got my hair professionally bleached to “white” and just want it a little less yellow. But on the level scale it would be like a 12 so I’m nervous to add even a hint of color

Jessie@ You can try using a purple shampoo. It is great for blonde hair. Don’t use it at every shampoo,because it can turn your hair purple. Unless you don’t mind purple hair 😊

I literally was about to tone my hair with T18 and decided to watch Brad just to make sure I don’t do anything ridiculous. Thank you Brad!
