I'm interested in potential support for Roon and Kodi but that's not a done deal yet. So far it looks like the only HT functionality working out of the box (when it comes out, hopefully in July) is ability to learn IR commands from original remotes, which wouldn't be bad once done. I'd love to be able to control my Parasound P7 analog preamp bidirectionally via RS232 (perhaps supplying a Raspberry Pi and serial adapter) but it's not clear how interested these guys would be in supporting older equipment (non-BT, etc.) I have some Philips Hue lights, which might be useful to control with the remote, and a Nest thermostat, which wouldn't as far as I can see. I have no plans to go crazy with "Smart Home". I have zero interest in voice commands.

@@Youthman yes I know. a keyboard or computer mouse uses MUCH less battery and can be left untouched for several weeks without running out of batteries. you can not with Harmony. What I like about harmony is that you can program it from a database to make almost anything work with it. For used electronics buyers, you do not always get a remote control.
@christopher1800 Жыл бұрын
All these universal remote projects are fairly young (kickstarter) projects. From experience, these are highly uncertain. Some die, others get sold out. Only a few actually make it. I’m cynical about the entire concept. So I’ll stick with my Harmony Elite for as long as possible. By the time it stops working, hopefully one of these projects has actually materialized into something decent.

You are correct, harmony had monopolized the remote market. Now that they have closed up shop, brands see an opportunity to enter the market.

Love/hate relationship for me with my Harmony remote. It's 90% good, but the engineer who decided a rounded bottom contour makes sense was completely clueless. Lay it on your recliner armrest and try to press a button one-handed. I almost can't wait until mine dies and I have to chuck it.

That's my biggest beef too. I've been a user since the original and they nailed it perfectly with the Harmony One design, best remote ever made, then it was all down hill from there.

With all the streamers coming with basic but functional remotes and the minimalistic entertainment systems... Gone are the days of the elaborate entertainment systems and this type of gadgetry. Many of the local electronics retailers near me have literally closed their entertainment rooms where home theaters usually resided, in favor of other products that sell better. I'd have to see a huge adoption of this product before of ever consider purchasing. I'm not saying it can't be done, but if a brand such as Harmony decided to run away from the space... there's probably a reason.

@Youthman3 жыл бұрын
For me it’s not about being lazy. The main reason is so my family can know how to use the system. One button to turn everything on, set inputs etc, one button to power everything down. My wife would never be able to figure it out otherwise.

If you like having 6 remotes, nothing wrong with that.
@oliverpolden2 жыл бұрын
That's fine if you have one or two remotes, but when you have three devices that need to turn on and switch to the correct inputs you really need a smart remote. Not to mention that it also reduces clutter and means anyone in your household can use it. Oh and you don't have to point the remote at the device either so your componets can all be hidden away.

I checked out the YIO page and I just can't stand how everything is now labeled as "smart". Smart speakers, smart home, smart this and that. I guess human beings aren't so "smart" any longer. The best remote I've ever seen is the Universal Remote RF-10 which hasn't been made for quite a few years now; but I've stockpiled them when I can find them. So many functions and keys that it runs my whole system, including the setup menus of all components and of course, my lights. Yes, it's all manual setup, but when it's done it is so easy to operate by feel even in the dark. No thank you to all this "simplified" and "limited functionality" stuff that you're still pulling out remotes for setup purposes. I've never seen anything equal the RF-10 remote. And no thank you to all of this "smart" crap that everybody is calling everything under the sun and moon these days; it's all quite a bit overplayed in my book any more.
@Youthman3 жыл бұрын
It’s not for everyone. I had the URC MX-890 and did not like it at all due to the clunky programming interface and the need to manually add each and every button for each remote. I’ll take a smart remote anyway. 👍
@JRobert1111113 жыл бұрын
@@Youthman The biggest problem I have is with so much of many remote's functionality is done via a display screen. Give yourself more time, and you'll find that the eyes don't want to be focused out on the TV (I have an 85" Sony), and then try to focus on a little screen on the remote (as is the case with the URC MX-890 as well). I don't mind teaching each button individually on the RF-10 remote, because when you're done it is wonderful to use in the dark by touch/feel only. And there is no worry about future support of the product as the only restriction is if the remote is still working or not, that's it. Best of luck to you with this new remote and I look forward to hearing more about it just to learn more about what is out there. Take care!

Harmony was overpriced and didn’t last. Buttons would always begin to wear out after the first year of use. The YIO looks nice but, not $427 nice. To purchase an un proven product at that price seems very risky. I wish URC would embrace prosumers more. I still have my MX-810 with over 10 years of use on it and it still works perfectly. However, not having Bluetooth connectivity is making the remote really start to show its age. The SofaBaton U1 is still my go to remote and, at $50, it’s hard to beat

Logitech is getting out of the remote business because tv’s now are so advanced and have all the apps built in and the tv remote also controls soundbars and subs. The need for a advanced universal remote is becoming lesser and lesser by the day. I have been a harmony remote user for 10 years and to be honest I can control my tv,soundbar from my nvidia shield remote. I assume other users are heading towards that direction as well. Dvd players are fizzling down.

Just depends on what you need it to do. I have Activities that cannot be replicated with an Nvidia shield remote.
@arcaderacer5863 жыл бұрын
@@Youthman I agree and I also have a few more activities that I like my harmony for… but my point is the need is slowly dwindling for these advanced remotes as more technology is packed into newer devices. wow £300, my harmony didn't cost that, the problem i see here as i've seen with many other new remotes is that even if they make it and start shipping after about a year the company sells out or just disappear and your left with a £300 brick sat in the draw, i will admit i have backed sofabaton but then it was less than half the price of the yio, i think for me i would need to see if it becomes established before i commit to an unknown.
