Earlier this month, two young mountain lion cubs were brought to Oakland Zoo’s veterinary hospital. Sadly, the suspected mother of the two sisters was killed by a car. The orphaned cubs were found wandering near Burlingame, where they were picked up by California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Our veterinary team performed full examinations on both cubs, who are estimated to be between 6-10 weeks old. Both cubs were given hydrating fluids, treated for parasites and fleas, and tested for viruses, and, besides being dehydrated and underweight, they appear to be in relatively good health.
Because they are so young, these two lack the skills to survive in the wild. We will take care of them until CA Fish & Wildlife finds them permanent homes.
These are the 25th and 26th mountain lions our rescue team has treated at Oakland Zoo.
Hang in there, little ones! You’re in good hands.
