Always useful videos from your channel. There was something in the video that grabbed my attention, you told the lady "how did you know I WAS English?" notice was since you are still English. That brings me to this when must we use the present "is"? because in some cases I think the past would be incorrect to use. Not very sure, though.
@SimpleEnglishVideos9 жыл бұрын
Saad Altuilaai Oh good question Saad. Both forms would be possible there - so 'How did you know I'm English? or 'How did you know I was English?' (She discovered I was English in the past and 'I was English' matches)

+IamTamila HI! Yes, you could say say here, but it would have a different meaning. 'Tell' here refers to recognizing the difference. 'Say' would simply mean speak the words.

Hi Vicky and Jay. Could you please tell me what is the difference between 'have/has got' and 'have/has gotten'? I look forward to your reply soon. bye
@SimpleEnglishVideos9 жыл бұрын
+fabianologfatec Oh, funny you should ask that because I am just working on a project with Jennifer where we plan to teach this point together. Until we do... We use 'has/have got ' AND 'have' to talk about things we own in both British and American English. In British English 'has/have got' is more common and in American 'have' is more common. (The question forms are Have you got...?' and 'Do you have...?' In British English the forms of 'got' are get, got, got. In American English the forms of 'got' are get, got, gotten. And that's about as much as I can tell you here, but like I said, we're working on a video that will look at this difference between UK and British English.

Dear Vicky and Jay ,hello. I have a question and I need your advice. Do native speakers say '20 minutes' walk or twenty minutes walk?What is the right answer?I mean the apostrophe.As for me I'd rather say 20 minutes' walk.Thank you so much.
@SimpleEnglishVideos5 жыл бұрын
Hi Nora. In this case, I think you're thinking in terms of something like the answer to the question 'How far is it?' and the correct answer is we would treat 'twenty minutes' as a possessive adjective that would require an apostrophe. So it would be 'It's twenty minutes' walk.' Other examples like this would be ten days' leave or my two cents' worth. But another answer to that question (which might be more natural) could be 'It's a twenty minute walk.' Then twenty minute becomes a straightforward adjective and no apostrophe is needed, but you'd need the indefinite article. Hope this helps.

With tell you are telling someone but you could say, he said to me, or is that wrong?
@SimpleEnglishVideos5 жыл бұрын
Hi David_Does_Gaming. "He said to me..." sounds strange because after 'say' we normally put the words that were said. But as we say at the start of this this video, there are some situations where say and tell are interchangeable, There are other situations where they are not though. Perhaps watch again and you'll see what I mean?

Hello Vicki and Jay! It's me again! 😳😳😳 May I ask something again? 🙈 The idiom " She is goin to go places." means that someone is succesfull or very skillful in specific areas. Do you know where it comes from? "To go places" when you are successful? 😯 Is it comparable with that someone is paving his way to the places he wants to be? Thank you so much for this lecture *___* Have a nice weekend you two! ♥
@SimpleEnglishVideos6 жыл бұрын
Yes, you're right. When we say 'she's going places' were predicting that she will be very successful, Steffi. I've no idea how the idiom arose, but we do have a lot of metaphors in English where we see life as a journey. Paving our way is a great one, and there are many more. Babies arrive, we cross bridges when we come to them, sometimes we don't know where discussions are heading, we set out to be one thing and then we become another, things take unexpected turns... You know, I think you might have inspired a video here. :-)
@steffis44806 жыл бұрын
Oh Vicki 😍 Wow - that's such a wonderful way of looking at life. And you're so right when I read your examples and think of other metaphorical expressions in English. "the root of a problem" or "a blossoming romance" 💕 We use expressions like this in German as well, but most of our idioms are rooted (😋) in the middle ages I would loooove to learn more about it! 😍😍😍 Can't wait for another video from you about this topic! Oh that makes me extremely happy right now 😍 Thanks a lot Vicki ♥
