You clearly brought up points that newer players might not recognize about if they want to get their group into BA or other historical games and didn't seem to be passing judgment either way to me. The fact that people can look at a video like that and have the reaction they did is horrible to me. I completely agree that the behavior shown in the comments of that video has no business anywhere but I commend you for waiting until you were in a headspace to not lash back to address it. Love all your videos and can't wait until the deathmatch series starts up again whatever form it takes.

as a generic wargamer i'm going to quickly jump on the historical wargame shenanigans, i play as the germans in a wargame called "flames of war" now i quite honestly don't feel comfortable playing as them usually, but im in love with the unique german combat doctrine and the looks of the models, but i don't think it's justified to harrass a innocent... guy, its honestly disguisting what people are capable of and i feel really sorry for anyone who has fallen victim to all these... mindless individuals who think their actions don't have an effect on the people they harrass in real life! i really hope everything is going okay now since you're my idol! my whole warhammer carreer is thanks to you and i know this might sound weird, or look weird but im really thankful for opening my eyes to warhammer and everything else!

You should never feel uncomfortable about playing a faction in a historical wargame. The whole point is appreciation of and reenactment of history. If we shy away from history because it makes us uncomfortable than we move ever closer to inadvertently repeating it.

As a historical wargamer - there was nothing harmful, hateful or offensive about your video on historical wargaming. I thought it was a good take, and a thoughtful take on the subject. People want to be offended. People want to be upset and point fingers and cast blame over anything that doesn't 100% agree with something they like - and they are the sort to brigade someone or something online to make themselves feel superior. Also as a historical wargamer, I often find the people most offended are those willing to be the most offensive. I'm sorry anyone in the hobby made you feel threatened. You did good. on the bolt action video: i genuinely thought you handled bringing up the discussion *really well*. for me personally, historical wargaming puts a really bad taste in my mouth (for fairly obvious reasons) and it worries me a LOT that you caught such a volatile and horrific response from SO many people. well-meaning but upset folks don't do that kinda shit, that's beyond the pale. i don't love what that implies about the extremism prevalent in the bolt action community. it was the gentlest possible hint of maybe-criticism that invites you to think deeper about the topic, if that many people can't even handle that that doesn't bode well. even if i wasn't uncomfortable with historical wargaming i'd steer well clear of the topic and the game after seeing that. stay safe y'all on all the other things: fuck dude i am excited as hell--ESPECIALLY for battletech. you got me into the video games, i ended up reading a bunch of the books, and i picked up that same beginner box last year! i hope you have a blast getting into the tabletop game, and honestly it's such a refreshing change of pace painting-wise to put my whole pussy into a handful of battlemechs to play a game with a completed lance rather than having to grind through 20-50 minis if i don't wanna field grey plastic. makes it easier to enjoy painting things just for me outside of work painting yaknow the start collecting battle report pivot sounds like a fantastic idea. the work you pour into your batreps *really* shows, they're incredible videos, i'd be shocked if they didn't perform better when removed from the start collecting branding. fingers crossed for ya but i'm sure you don't need it :)

The Start Collecting Deathmatch plans sound great to me! Those videos are some of my all time favorites on the channel, but it's not specifically because of the Start Collecting sets, it's because the small scale battles are easier to grasp and your battle reports are BY FAR the best on youtube

The Bolt Action video was a learning experience I suppose, but it was clear that a large portion of people used that to further prop up their assumptions of you and your character after a very personal situation. With regards to "the video" I had some thoughts: First, I remember when it came out and I also felt you didn't take a side (which is what you should have done, so awesome on you!) Its a difficult line to walk when you're painting something controversial while still remaining neutral about the historical context surrounding the piece. Secondly, I'm happy you had a frank discussion about it with the haters and non-haters. They have no right to do any of the horrible things they did to you, the fans and your family. For the tournament, I'm in it for the battle reports, not for the start collecting portion. So as long as you keep doing BRs (even the tournament is optional, though a good framing story) I'll keep watching. Edit: Commented before the Bolt Action bit, I think the original video was good, and your coverage of the outcome here was also well reasoned and rational. Try not to let the dirtbags on the internet get you down and keep up the good work.

Having drifted back into scale modeling of WWII aircraft and armor, it strikes me at how different the attitudes are from that community to the question of the various armies being represented. The biggest question that I have seen is the representation of the swastika on the models. Some choose to leave them off while others include them for historical accuracy, which is an important topic for many of the modelers. Since the largest communities of these modelers are in Europe or Asia, you might expect the most vocal response but that really seem to not be the case. I am sorry for the responses that you received but know that even though I have really abandoned Warhammer for historical modeling, I am still a big fan of both of you. The other Dr. P.

I'm a big Bolt Action fan and when I saw that old video, I just thought. "Guy doesn't like it... Doesn't matter." I like your content, it is entertaining. I remember being so annoyed the comments on the bolt action video. It felt like people where just bandwagoning and didn't even listen to what you said. You pointed out a thing, that can create discomfort in the real world. It was very clear you didn't think that it was necessarily wrong to use that imagery in a historical war game. It is scary that there are so many adults who can so easily end up giving death threats for something so innocent. It both speaks to both how vile but also how lazy they are that they couldn't even listen to and understand the video before sending such venom to you.

Hey Guy, that's my 2 cts on that, just a thought. Your video about historicals was on the mark. Some armies are both popular and deeply problematic, and real war has scarred societies. Some people are still around from the conflicts we play, be that ww2, 6days or Vietnam. It is natural to be uncomfortable around the idea to play real bad guys, as opposed to fictional ones. That was your point iirc. Now the part to make you uncomfortable, not by intention, but I believe that your audience has a fringe. Not your fault, this hobby attracts all sorts of people. This fringe, the same crowd I wager to go mental about female custodes and the other culture war nonsense, has within it a small group that would send you threats, spread lies and act on that. And you triggered them by voicing your thoughts. That's all it took. What I suggest, is to drive these people away by once in a while taking a harmless, inoffensive, but progressive stance. Like painting different shades of human skin, experimenting with female heads on models that are not canonically, but practically male only, and voicing concerns when dealing with mature material, even when you enjoy it. I believe your community will benefit from this, the controversy will be kept very limited and ultimately it will be financially neutral or advantageous. You seem to be a thoughtful man, so take that as you like. You will do great!

Regarding the Bolt Action! controversy, I was one of the people who was critical of your takes in the video, and still don't think it was a good video, but I also left it at a disagreeing comment and was happy to move on when you did. So many youtubers double down in the face of drama, and it was both very mature and very smart from a business sense for you to not remotely do that. In a later video I saw someone continuing to throw harassing comments related to the Bolt Action video and called them out, and continue to do so. I am horrified that members of the historical wargaming community threatened you, and spread those vile rumors all over the internet, and continue to wish you the best.

I think the 500pt battle report idea is a solid one! Also, side note: as a PoC who has been in the hobby space since I was 4 years old (32 now), I can honestly say you said nothing wrong in the historical wargames video. There are a lot of players who _do_ deserve side-eye for their "enthusiasm," whilst there are also some really good reasons to play those games. The thing is, the same is true for 40K (though to a lesser extent, of course), with even particular armies garnering those vibes. There's a reason I've never met a Maltese Black Templar player, for example :P I'm glad to see you take such a strong stance against the vitriol. Keep up the good work, Guy.

I'm sorry Guy that you had to experience it. 😢 But shifting gears I would love to see a how to play battle tech video as I have had the idea of trying it out. To add on it would be cool to see a how to play age of Sigmar 4th too. Lastly I think shifting to a 500 pts tournament game will be the best option. But I think that some rules must be set in so that it doesn't get unbalanced like don't use crazy strong monsters or vehicles. Like Norns or land raiders. Maybe some custom missions of scoring. Hi when me and my friend were playing warhammer he told me that you abandoned your children for warhammer because warhammer is just that addictive and I told him no that's not true and without even thinking I grabbed his neck and started squeezing and when i let go he ran out of the building and left his miniatures and then the police showed up at my house and i had to spend some time away to relax and think about what i have done and now my friend does not play warhammer with me anymore

Yes to Battletech! I'm a big fan - haven't actually played since the mid 90's (miniatures of that era are nowhere near what the are now). I participated in the crowdfund that took place recently... and now just waiting for my box. As many people of my vintage, huge fan of the Mad Cat/Timberwolf. Would really like some 'Mech painting guides! As for the hard part.... fandoms are, for good or bad, made up of fanatics. Some of them are going to cross some lines that are downright abhorrent. Sorry the people at Midwinter had to endure this. This is one of the reasons we can't have reasonable discussions about topics even mildly controversial.

honestly, the reaction to that bolt action video was completely out of wack. all you said was "hey some people might shy away from historical wargaming because someone has to play the nazis and that's uncomfortable for some people, and also there are right wingers in wargaming circles. but im not judging you if you like the gear or tanks, here, let me paint the panzer so everyone knows i mean what im saying" then the exact right wingers you were talking about came out of the woodwork to threaten your life. absolutely ridiculous behavior over a plastic tank and im glad you're ok

Thanks mate! That was certainly my take on the whole situation for a while, but I've spoken to lots of lovely, very reasonable people who also had a problem with that video, so maybe I just worded my point terribly. Either way, this should hopefully clear things up :)

On the topic of the "Start Collecting Death Match" series, Yes the 500 point idea sounds great. On the topic of the backlash from the Historicals video... Sadly whenever people play anything historical that means one of the players will most likely have to collect and play as the "Bad Guys" and the simple fact is that even the "Good Guys" end up doing bad things during war. Maybe there is a reason why younger people are not seen playing historical games as much and part of that is a needed level of maturity of players involved. I'm truly sorry that the backlash happened to you and that they did what they did. But it is good to hear that most things are currently going well for you and looking up for the Midwinter gang! Hope that some day soon you're able to own your own place, not only removing yourself and business from being at the mercy of the landlord but also allowing you a new level of financial stability.

Great update video, I wish I could have given each chapter a like rather than just one for the whole video. Your bolt action video actually got my friends and I discussing giving it a go (Being primarily 40k players), which I think will happen at some point in the future. I would definitely be interested in seeing some Battletech as I have no frame of reference other than older hobbyists mentioning it as their gateway to the hobby. I would also be interested in seeing a video on Lorcana or other card games, as my friends and I have recently started playing Magic the Gathering: Commanders(I am loving my Ruinous Powers deck).

The DG tank really couldnt have gone to anyone more appreciative :) that was pretty wholesome (considering, y'know, spincter tank). On the negativity and unhinged bs you mentioned, I'm sorry to hear you've had all that. I remember Mordian Glory doing a pretty upset response video but I'd not heard anymore on it. A few weeks after meeting you at UKGE (courtesy of Dave, what a ledge), someone commented on me sporting a MWM sticker on my mini transport case and told me about the rumours...it all seemed pretty off. What a deranged response the dregs of our minis/wargaming community spread around, such as shame that anyone bought it let alone the impact it had on your personal life. Looking forward to seeing more MWM content

Then he tried to play the victim by drawing attention to the social consequences of the video. I'm a huge Battletech fan, getting into the game can be a bit daunting at first, Battletech proper hasn't really changed their ruleset since it's inception in the 80s and it feels like it. I'd recommend you start with Alpha Strike which is their more modern version of the game which uses the same models and terrain but plays like a more modern skirmish game, measure distances instead of hex maps and such.

Battletech is honestly pretty easy to get. Takes maybe 1-2 games to get the flow, but when you do, man it's awesome. I can't wait to see some awesome Battletech content, maybe even a "Speedpaint a House Steiner lance..." Just a thought...

Great video catch up! As far as “THAT” video, I had no idea there was controversy. It was a video to start conversations and to make you think. My sons and I attended a local convention recently where it’s majority of historic games. We played a game based on Battle of Britain and took the mantle of Germans. My sons enjoyed learning about how those battles affected the war as much as anything else. We rolled dice and had fun. I hated to hear you felt unsafe following the video. I genuinely don’t understand the darker side of the community. We’re all here because we paint little plastic people so if the video isn’t scratching a particular itch then skip it! Pretty sure Guy, Harry and the rest of us that actually want to learn from them won’t miss you. Anyway much love from my group of hobbies goblins to you and yours Guy mate!

Hey Guy! Love to see that you picked up the Xenomorph Dragon. I've had one for a while now and this will give me an excuse to finally get some paint on it if you put out a video. I must warn you though, it's a bit top heavy and gets knocked over easily. With your kiddos around you may want to add a bigger base or put some weight in the bottom to keep it level as it's got some sharp points on the claws. Love the stuff man!

Battletech Beginner Box is great, but playing the tabletop gets better once you start adding more rules too it (heat management, ammo etc)

The 500pnt death match idea is really good, it gives new players an idea of a starting force and how to paint it up. As fun as a combat patrol would have been, they are currently changing them all (again). I would (also) love to see your take on painting custodes in their shining armor
