VIDEO SPECIAL: Simple Flying said farewell to the stunning Qantas 747 in Sydney, Australia!
A special thanks to Qantas for arranging such a brilliant event celebrating their 747 operations.
Qantas has closed a chapter on its history, farewelling the Boeing 747 series in a stunning event this morning. Bittersweet words were spun by CEO Alan Joyce, at the same time as the engines spun up for the last flight of the Qantas Boeing 747-400. The final aircraft departed Sydney in the early afternoon for its resting place in California.

From my perspective I do feel like it is an upsetting time that Qantas will be retiring the 747s. 747s have changed not only Qantas but the whole Airline industry. Qantas is saying Goodbye to the Queen of the skies. Farewell.😞👋👏 R.I.P Loved by all Qantas 747s 1989-2020

What a beauty! Sadly, I was not born in an era where her Majesty the "Queen of the Skies" was everywhere in the skies. Instead, I had twin-engined 777s, Dreamliners and A350s as my travel companions. I have flown on Singapore Airlines' 747 as a kid, but not as an aviation enthusiast, but I had the privilege of flying on a Thai Airways example from my home in Singapore to Bangkok and my god it was so yesteryear inside..... Anyway, hope to be able to fly on an old school 747 again before they disappear forever..... The -8I does not have that same feel inside...

Oh wow, I worked at LAX right next to Quantas hangar. Sometimes 6 747s would be parked and 1 A380. Maybe it's to early but I wonder if John Travolta was there in Australia or LA for its last flight? I saw him at the A380 first flight to LAX ceremony and he flew it to San Francisco and back. Sad more 47s are being retired, definitely a end of an era...

Love the ‘back in the day’ shots when the economy seats were thick and comfortable, and people wore a suit and tie to fly. That was when if you actually flew overseas the whole family would see you off at the airport, and Qantas gave you a certificate for your first crossing on the equator. Only did a couple flights then, but went to many sendoffs!

A few years ago I was contracted to fly older 737’s and 727s to the Mohave desert for destruction and reclamation of parts. As we were flying them I was looking at the logs and history of these airplanes one 727 first flew for Lufthansa in 1978 Then Piedmont Then Eastern then Amerijet first delivered in 1978. After its 40 years of service we were giving up on it . Of course due to its cycle life. It was sad. Every aircraft we flew down there was literally in perfect working condition with every system operating as they did the day they rolled out of the factory. Iv always been a sentimental person who loves history. The turn to final I would always say out loud “sorry old girl this is it”. And the other crew members in the FD all whispered up yep this is it. Very very sad. After we landed I touched the skin of these planes that hauled millions of miles safely and would say “Thank you old friend it’s your time to rest” These airplanes are not just another piece of machinery. They have true soul. Money and hours were good flying them down but I was a bit heart wrenching.

19 years ago I worked on the 747-400ER installing the interior of that aircraft in the factory in Everett Washington. It is sad to see that the queen of the sky is retiring from service and I can say so long 747 and may your time be remembered as it should. The 747-400ER was always a special aircraft and had special features over the standard 747-400 as it had a interior more like the 777-200ER then the other 747's. I retired in 2017 from Boeing after almost 30 years there and it brings back the flood of memories working on all the aircraft that I worked on going into retirement. Edit: I should clarify that Qantas was the only airline that ordered and took delivery of the 747-400ER.

Qantas is a great airline - probably the world's best airline with actually zero accidents. Approximately 80 percent of airplane accidents are due to human error (pilots, air traffic controllers, mechanics, etc.) and 20 percent are due to machine (equipment) failures.
