Another way to confirm that it is cylinder #1 on tdc of compression (and not tdc exhaust) is take note that the intake valve of #3 is open on the intake stroke. Can see on this video. If you work back through the firing order, #3 is halfway through its intake stroke when #1 is tdc on compression. If #1 is tdc on exhaust then both valves on #3 will be closed as #3 is halfway down the power stroke.

@ Ike Godsay, Yeah I see that. I made this video as I work alone and I have reusable valve cover gaskets. I find this easier than putting my finger in #1 spark plug hole and turning the engine over. I also have video that shows the method to adjust valves that is found in the Chilton's manual. There is a lot of good info on the net, but not found on KZbin that people are not aware of.

Complete novice on finding TDC and have been using my 0 degree mark on my balancer. But I'm replacing my valve covers and was hoping for to get TDC using your method. Seems like you can go a little before or a little after the 0 degrees and throw everything off if you don't stop at the exact time-- how will I know when to stop?🤔

@raymond menendez The video is to help find TDC for cylinder 1 on a sbc. If you can see the harmonic balancer you will see 0 line up with a mark, so stop there and that is where you can install the distributor. Once you find TDC you need to follow instructions to set initial timing if changing the distributor, adjust the valves, or something else that caused you to change the timing.

@@c41man been having troubles with pinging on hard throttle. Using 93 Octane with Octane boost. Have initial timing at 6 degrees already and have been wondering it the timing mark is accurate since the motor was rebuilt. 1970 C10 with a 350. Figure this will put my mind at ease once and for all. Thank you so much for your time on a Sunday afternoon 🖖

@@raymondmenendez6499 Oh I see. Use a timing light to adjust for less timing until it doesn't ping when you are driving. You're right the timing mark could be wrong. Then when you feel absolutely ready watch this video and others to make sure your timing mark is correct. Good luck!

Hello Dave a couple questions. 1. How do you adjust poly-locks when the engine is running? Also those must not be self aligning rockers as i see you have guide plates?

@ Mitch C I have not tried to adjust the valves or poly-locks with the engine running. You could probable do it with a wrench and the correct size allen key socket for your rachet and adjust until the ticking goes away. I believe at this point I already had a retro roller cam and roller lifters so I didn't need to adjust the valves after the intial adjustment. Correct I have guide plates on the Nova, so no self aligning rocker arms.

But which way did you turn the Harmonic balancer, right or left ? And is this the same direction on a small block 305?

Turn the balancer clockwise or to the right. SBC 350 and 305 will be the same.

@@c41man I have a 1990 caprice 305 tbi I have to turn the crank counterclockwise while standing of driver side going clockwise the rocker arms don't move

TDC would be I think always if u have the piston up and u look at the camshaft lobes and if the exhaust valve is the one next to be open it means u had compression and power strokes and on your way to exhaust , I mean if the piston is still up , power stroke is beginning , and next would obviously exhaust
