I have a lot of experience working on reels, here are a few suggestions. 1. Oil the bearings with a needle tip bottle, you don't need any more than 1 drop per bearing. 2. Clean the idle gears with a toothbrush, maybe you did this and didn't show it. 3. Only use grease on the worm gear, it will last a lot longer. 4. Very lightly coat the in inside of the handle side frame and side plate with grease. This will catch any dirt that gets inside from water intrusion. 5. Get some drag washer grease for shimano and daiwa reels, or any reels with carbon washers. Cal's universal or shimano drag grease will work. Just don't use it on the cheaper reels with the Teflon or felt washers.

I'm glad this is becoming a mainstream thing to take care of your own gear. You did a lot good because you were careful. The only thing I noticed was your "anti-reverse bearing" (one way roller bearing) absolutely needs to be greased. Also you should dab some grease on your drag washers in between each layer. Tackle Junky has a series on this which is very in depth by the way.
@NFL884 жыл бұрын
Not to be a jerk...But Please no one listen to this Terrible advice...NEVER put grease on an anti reverse bearing or clutch lol....VERY light wipe with oil if you must and keep it clean. Most reel techs dont put anything on them.
@fishnevada4 жыл бұрын
Rolo I always appreciate input from different thought processes, I’d like to hear more why you say no grease on the one way? Every book in every reel box I’ve gotten says it’s a grease point.

@@fishnevada maybe if you don't want to be a jerk you shouldn't capitalize TERRIBLE in your comment.
@NFL884 жыл бұрын
FishNevada Anti reverse bearings and one way clutches are extremely fickle...Grease can cause them not to grip the sleeve that fits on the drive shaft...the classic result of greasing them is a handle that also spins in reverse. I just fixed a shimano spinning reel that had this...Grease also traps and holds contaminants and grit. Fine for something like main gear to pinion, drag stacks and such- but it can cause premature wear on things like levelwind worm gears, and Anti reverse bearings etc. And every “reel maintenance” paper that comes in a box are almost always worthless (beyond a schematic)
@fishnevada4 жыл бұрын
Rolo fair enough, I absolutely agree that grease traps dirt and ALWAYS tell people to clean at minimum once a year to keep that crap out. That being said I have some very old reels that I’ve done the same way (grease the one way) and never had one spin backwards. I have however had pawls wear out because I had a thick dirt build up in grease in the worm shaft. One of the reasons I tell people to clean them out from factory and run oil through. It’s always been my understanding that the springs in the one way are what grip the handle sleeve and if you start getting spin back it’s probably more a sign that the roller is ready to be replaced (springs are probably toast). I would run oil on them too but I don’t think I can convince myself running metal on metal dry is ever a good idea. Appreciate the input though. Maybe I’ll give oil a try for a year and see how I like it.

Only thing I would suggest is a slightly heavier grease lightly applied to scrubbed down drag washers. In my opinion this really helps with a smoother operating drag. Super lube PTFE is decent for this or Shimano’s star drag grease that you can get for like 2$ from a authorized dealer.

Good content, I've said before there's more to fishing than catching fish. Fishing related maintenance videos are always a good idea. On a side note, no pun intended for once, I noticed a guitar case in the background. Do you play? What kind of guitar is it? After my wife died I bought a guitar and amp and tried learning. I figured it would keep my mind off things and give me something to do. I was learning too but starting in one's mid forties isn't good and I had to much pain in my elbows and fingers so I had to quit. It's to bad because playing is fun. At least I gave it a shot.
