I’ve been setting new babies up in tubs identical or as close to how the breeder houses them as possible and placing those in a large fully furnished habitat, putting a hole in the tub so the babies can go in and out as they choose. I don’t know why I didn’t think of this sooner. It is working phenomenally well. The snakes are habituating to the complex habitats in their own time and with no distress. I have tested this out now with 5 baby snakes and it’s gone so smoothly. When possible I’m doing it now with adults that I’m placing in new habitats, provided the old enclosure fits inside the new one. Eventually the old tub or enclosure can come out and the animal will let you know when is a good time by abandoning their old digs. Very low stress method to implement housing changes. The mistake people make is not allowing animals to gradually transition from what they’re used to over to the new environment and this takes all the work out of that for the keeper.

@@Rileys-Reptiles I made the really horrible mistake of getting a young jungle and plopping her into an all glass ExoTerra when she arrived. This was about 4 years ago when I first got Carpets and before it dawned on me to use my knowledge of animal behavior and training with my snakes. DUH! I feel like such an idiot looking back now but she taught me better and led me down the path I’m on now.

Great video. I appreciate your straightforward, non-judgmental presentation. This information is so important AND for new keepers, it's not always as easily or clearly accessible on the internet as some might believe. Even if they can access it, it's still confusing at first thanks to nomenclature oddities and some of the contradictory info floating around out there thanks to generic care sites and some of the reptile wholesaler types.

Is there a way to determine the lineage of a carpet python? My local pet shop that I volunteer in has a carpet python in and she's lovely, but the guy who owns the place isn't much of a snake person and I don't think he realised the importance of subspecies before. I think she's a jungle carpet python, but I'm not sure past that and I'm not sure how to tell if she's actually a hybrid, or if it's even possible to tell.

I had to keep my 5ft jag in a 20-gallon long. You would think I was abusive towards her, but when I put her in a bigger cage she didn't eat; she tried to get out constantly. She was just stressed out for the 2 weeks I had her in there. I put her back in the smaller cage she went and hid for 3 days and took food. Lots of people think bigger cages mean better. That's not the case with all snakes.
@Rileys-Reptiles
@Rileys-Reptiles Жыл бұрын
Very true. It’s not always the same with every snake. I have a Jungle like that. She spent years in a baby bin because anytime I tried to upgrade her to something even halfway appropriately sized for her she would stress out and go on hunger strike. Had to take baby steps and start putting her smaller enclosure inside a bigger one until that became ok and repeat so on and so forth

I have a question about the size for younger snakes, why do they get stressed out by a larger enclosure? I mean in the open wild there is no borders, is it just about having enough hiding places or has it to be a smaller enclosure in the beginning?
@Rileys-Reptiles
@Rileys-Reptiles 3 жыл бұрын
In the wild they are crammed under rocks or in logs because being out in the open leaves them vulnerable to attack and predation. You put ANY animal in a large empty enclosure and they’re going to stress out. Put yourself in their position, they’re tiny and driven to survive and programmed to fear everything larger than them so being exposed and not in a confined space could mean certain death.

@@Rileys-Reptiles Thank you very much for your answer , and so quick. I am planning to get a Jungle Carpet Phython as a pet, but first I want to make sure that I do my homework, and the issue of the enclosure space has been raised at multiple places. Espeacially that point that a too big enclosure for a too little snake will cause a lot of stress to the animal. I am planning to build my own, I have a space of about 6 foot X 30 Inch space available. Height I could go for two or even more feet but anything taller than that would make it harder for me to clean it. What features should it defintivly have? What is superflous? Besides a hideout what features should one put in there? (One reason I am looking into carpets is that they supposedly semiaboreal so they at least will take the option to climb) ( I am not used to Imperial measurement)
@Rileys-Reptiles

I think common sense doing research on the python or other snakes one wants to have should be a must , pure strains of our native species is so important , I couldn’t imagine making hybrids unless like you said everything must be documented for record’s and if selling that information is passed on to the buyer that is licensed to keep said reptiles etc ,great information video I will be looking for snakes in the new year , if you have any for sale that would be awesome , live in the central west NSW .

Many breeders utilize morphmarket, websites, or their social media platforms to sell or advertise. But as for purity you will have to do your due diligence and ask the right questions and the right breeders to find out who works with cross projects and pure projects and both. Nick Mutton of Inland Reptile is s good place to start if purity is important

I think with ample space and opportunities for basking and cooling without having to compete for spatial resources, many species can be accommodated in a cohabitation arrangement. Cross breeding happens alot and l have a girl that l dont know what is in her, Jungle x Coastal or Diamond. l am not a breeder and l would not breed her anyway. l have a Coastal 100% her Anxthanic, will have to breed to find out. None of my pythons other then my rough scaled likes it hot, like 34c but my jungle cross even though set temp is 30c she neve goes to the watm side, she sits at the cooler end at 26c. Only time l see her under the heat is when she is in her shed cycle. They are all very different when it comes to temps, it is observation of them that will teach you alot.

Idk, it's pretty messed up to talk about living animals having "no value" or being "unattractive" to you. If crossbreeding creates unhealthy offspring, just say that. It's a big reason I tend to distance myself from the whole reptile community - even those who claim to love reptiles start talking about them as if they're exploitable commodities and little else. That probably wasn't your intent, but I've seen the mindset become very common.
@Rileys-Reptiles

I agree. I dislike that mindset as well, but that’s the reality of the hobby and how people behave and perceive it. I don’t want to produce unwanted animals or crosses that don’t sell regardless of how they’re perceived.
