@@KingoftheProfane I would say the full thing took me maybe 2-3 months to write the full proposal, start my business and go through the approval process to submit. I just couldn't dedicate full time to it. There are 3~ submission windows a year so I submitted during the window that just ended.

Pitch went great, started company, even spent the waiting period refining business. Declined, no data. Next steps?

Kind of off topic but if you receive funding are you expected to keep your full time job? Or is there a clause in the SBIR where you can allocate some of the award to pay yourself a salary?

In SBIR/STTR budget, if there's a Subcontract involved, the DC AND IDC of the Sub. is included in the Company's F&A calculation (assuming Company use 20% F&A, NOT negotiated rate). Is this correct? Thanks.

Hi Stacy! How often is it, that solo entrepreneurs get an invitation to submit a full proposal, after submitting a project pitch.? The innovation I am pursuing does not result in instant sales and cash flow (once the R&D proves the viability) so I don't have the necessary engineering team ready to work until I can pay them. I am very close to UC Berkeley and UC Davis, and "Silicon Valley", so I can find people for short term assistance and short contracts, but not full-fledged "I would love to join you" team members.
@keepyourequityco Жыл бұрын
Hi Scott- thank for your message. This is a very common situation. Many solo entrepreneurs would propose to hire consultants/advisors/collaborators if their Phase I SBIR application got funded. It would be good to identify these players beforehand so you can include them in the project pitch. Many innovations that are developed through the NSF SBIR program won't generate revenue till years later - that is okay. Hope that helps!

@@keepyourequityco Thank you for the swift response. As you might observe, engineers by the hundreds are getting laid off in the greater Bay Area, and it's difficult to distinguish real interest in my project versus feigned interest ("I need a job! Yes, I love designing door stops!" 🤗). The most enthusiastic are the academics, but they are not going to cast aside tenure to pursue a nebulous reward. Most typical outside academia are firms like Berkeley Engineering And Research (BEAR): we'll provide all sorts of expertise, for a $4000, up-front retainer. Hmmm! All my longtime colleagues from my computer coding work are retired, and not engineers.
