In this short video I show you how to fix a loose faucet stem on a Moen faucet. This is really less than a 5 minute job if everything cooperates with you.
UPDATE: I didn't put any Loctite on the screw in this video and hindsight I probably should. I use Loctite Threadlocker Blue on most things that run the risk of coming loose and I should have on this as my handle has started getting wobbly again.

Thank you. For other people, if you have plumbers silicon grease, apply a little (Q-tip) on threads and metal-to-metal contact areas for future disassembly and corrosion resistance. Grease also can help with leak proofing.

Yessss!! I have the same type of faucet that requires you to hand turn counterclockwise to loosen the handles. I couldn't remember how to loosen these as this Moen faucet is different from the other types where you pop the tab first at the top of the faucet handle. Thank you for the post! Very helpful!

Thank you for the huge help! I thought I could tighten the handle by popping off the plastic cap and using the right tool. After trying several tools and then going to a big box store to see what I might use it was very frustrating. Your quick tips took me about a minute to fix the loose handle. Thanks!

Maybe you could show how to fix a bathroom handle that starting to tturns farther back like it’s not going around in a complete circle. I have watched a few different videos but not one with what could be happening to the cold water faucet handle. I always appreciate simple instructions on how to repair our own things like you just shared with your project.👍

Thank you for your comment. The only experience I have with a handle going further around than it should is one of the plastic components was longer catching the stop limiter. In my case, it was my Moen Kitchen faucet. While I didn't record that particular issue I had to replace the handle hardware. If your bathroom faucet is a single handle perhaps it is having the same issue. Also, for my dual handle bathroom faucets I had to make sure the gear teeth were aligned up correctly in the handle and in the stem other wise it turned further back than it was supposed to.

Sean Moenkhoff I have a hot and cold faucet on 2 faucet. It is the cold water side which is turning to far back. I am afraid that it will break off if I try to turn it on again. Fortunately I am visiting family in Arizona so I will have to deal with this when I return home. But it was interesting to watch how you made your repair.

Hi Sean, any idea how to tighten the base/stem underneath? I was able to get the handle off but its actually the base that is wiggling around a bit. Thank you!
@SeanMoenkhoff
@SeanMoenkhoff 3 жыл бұрын
Hi @Bardwooders. If your faucet is like mine there will be a brass or nylon nut underneath the counter behind the sink on each stem. This nut goes around the entire stem/water supply line that goes through the counter to the top. You should be able to turn this nut on the stem and this should tighten up your base/stem.

My problem is a little different. When I turn the handle to turn on water, whole base turns. Is the screw still the remedy?
@SeanMoenkhoff
@SeanMoenkhoff Жыл бұрын
Hi @Joan Dodds, the screw only deals with the actual handle. It sounds like you need to tighten down the base more. I would try to tighten this down first as this is probably the problem.

Thank you for your video! I still have a problem though... The screw inside the housing wouldn't tighten any further. Any suggestions?
@SeanMoenkhoff
@SeanMoenkhoff 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kathy. Thanks for the compliment. As for the screw not turning any further - does it turn the other direction or at all? The only things I can think of (provided the screw turns in the other direction) is perhaps the screw is too long and needs to be shorter OR there is an additional worn part that is causing the looseness. Beyond that I really do not have any idea. If someone else has had the issue she's describing or has another idea please feel free to reply to this.
@katherinehall1630

Yes, the screw turned back the other way. Interestingly, it was a slotted screw so possibly replaced? I'll check out replacing it. Thank you again!

The base will not turn and I can't loosen the brass nut under the sink.
@SeanMoenkhoff
@SeanMoenkhoff 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Patty, If it's the same exact faucet it may be hard water build up at the bottom of the base and the counter top. I know I had to use a piece of rubber to get a good grip on the base the very first time I had to pull one off because of the amount of hardware water buildup that essentially "glued" it to the counter top. If it's not the same exact faucet what I would try to do is find the owners manual online. It should show or explain how to mount the faucet. To get the faucet off, you'd just do the opposite such as loosen, turn the opposite direction, etc. Word of caution though - since many things are plastic nowadays, don't apply extreme force otherwise you may break part of the plastic resulting in the need for additional repair.
