In this video I cover how to modify your side panel window. I am doing a series of case modding guides as part of the SC Modding segment, starting with the basics and working my way up. This is one of the most common mods. It is usually straightforward but it depends on the case and what you want to do with the window. There are many different options and possibilities. I take you through the entire process in detail and cover all of the necessary tools and materials which I have linked to below.

I've been following your channel for a long time, and I gotta say I really like this new SC Modding series. For some reason, you always upload videos when I'm about to undertake a similar project myself, so a lot of these SC Modding videos has really come in handy, especially the radiator painting video and this one! :) Keep up the amazing work, you're an inspiration to us all!

Hey, I just wanted to add a tip for drilling acrylic; Typically most drill bits are suited for drilling steel -- so the cutting edge is sharp, particularly the pilot edge. When you're drilling acrylic this can cause problems as the blade will bite into the acrylic and either cause your work to spin if you don't have it clamped down or -- more likely -- shatter the acrylic. What I do to alleviate the problem is to use drill bits suited for drilling brass and softer materials. The pilot edge on these drill bits are flat, and so rather than cutting the material away they shave it away. I'm not sure if these drill bits are commonplace and you can buy them (I learned this trick from my work) but if you've got a steel drill bit you can convert it to a brass drill bit by simply sanding or grinding the sharp edge off of the pilot edge with a process called "dubbing" (Google it for a better description on how to do it). If you've got a Jeweller's grindstone on hand it makes the process super simple. Hope this helps some budding modders spare themselves some acrylic and some heartache.

Excellent just what I wanted to watch. Ive actually got a full windowed side panel in my basket on Coolermaster site for the HAFX case. But they have none in stock. I was thinking of actually having a go myself anyway and If i do mess up then the basket will be the alternative. This video will really help. Thanks again.

The final panel looked epic, nice job (that black paint was a mirror)! pop rivets look clean to attach the acrylic instead of screws (they are inexpensive and the tool is pretty cheep). However you have to drill them out if you want to take it back out.

Thanks for another great tutorial, amazing work and attention to detail. What's your experience with drilling larger holes in acrylic? I couldn't really tell if it was a special drill bit on your drill press and I have plans for my next build to drill some larger holes for pass-through fittings in a customized acrylic midplate. Browsing around I keep seeing people recommending acrylic point drill bits and starting with small bits at low rpm, working your way up to the desired size, lest risk the acrylic cracking.

I like using hex head bolts. Mr. Allen actually invented the hex bolt in Hartford, CT. Nice mod. The H440 looks a lot better without the drive bays and the full side window. Plexiglass is the way to go. How did you get your rounded corners? Did you switch from the jigsaw to the dremel?

I am currently attempting this with my h440, and it was going quite smooth until the side panel wouldn't go back on the case as something was hitting towards the back of the panel and wouldn't sink in to the grooves it's supposed to. Is removing the exhaust fan enough to fix it? You seem to have no issues with that and also have no rear fan but maybe that's just a coincidence

I got a BitFenix Prodigy. I own the windowed sidepanel but my GPU can't breathe. I just have to drill a few holes and polis them to make that mod. After that I want to paint my GPU green so it fits my color scheme. I want it to look like the 100ME edition. My third mod would be front IO. It's on the back sidepanel and I want it on the front and decided to move the power button, and the front USB 3.0 to the unused drivebay. Any ideas on where I can get materials? You worked with ButFenix Prodigy before...

Question: If I wanted to do a glass side panel, is there any hazard regarding heat? Would I have to use a special type of glass such as tempered glass? In your experience does a glass window give a better effect or is a good quality plexi glass the same thing as plexi is easier to work with. My problem is I have a nzxt s340 with a very low quality poly carbonate window that scratches very easily and thought maybe glass would add a much better effect. Thx I admire your work.
@Dunkelelf3
@Dunkelelf3 8 жыл бұрын
+Pieter van Heerden the problem about glass is the drilling i guess.. ofc there are drills for smaller holes and diamond hollow drills for bigger holes but you can't drill glass closer than 2 cm away from the edge or it will almost certain crack every time.. that's something you have to consider.. i don't know your sidepanel but i know that it has to have enough surface so you can dill the glass far enough from the sides because i drilled glass before and it can be a real pita.. also you should tape the glas where you drill and place it on a soft but flat surface when you drill it.. like rubber or cork or whatever.. drill with low rpm and carefully.. wear good gloves and saftey glasses.. i think the benefit of glass over plexi would be that it is very resistent against scratches but it also can break on the other hand and is heavier than plexi..

@SingularityComputers
@SingularityComputers 8 жыл бұрын
+Bekker I always wet sand paint. Otherwise the sandpaper ends up clogging and scratching the surface too deeply. Once you get above 600 grit you have to wet sand or the sandpaper will clog almost immediately on paint, metal, plastic. So it depends on the material and grit.
