I actually used one of these knots on a project. The asbestos removal company brought rope on a siding project, but forget to bring the pump jacks or the wood 4x4 poles. One of the guys was a steel worker and knew the rigging knot. We threw the rope over the roof of the house and tied it to his truck bumper. We used the hitch on planks and got the project completed. It was not OSHA approved, but the project got done.

You and most of the sites are telling only, how to tie a hitch. Better it is to teach also that where it is used or where and how it is used in normal working life. Thanks.

This is one of those knots I have used once in thirty years (1988 to be exact two years before my daughter was born and the same year I found the abok in the local library.. an original copy I never gave back). I needed a shelf over a sink quickly and cheap...I put two screw in hooks into the wall and tied each end with the scaffold hitch and I made it level by wrapping the wire around the each hook.. it lasted for three years until we moved... in that time it took more weight that a bracket would have.
@KnottingKnots6 жыл бұрын
That reminds me when I first got ABoK, once I had it, I thought I would be able to tie any knot?? I ended up getting a few other books first, to understand what the hell Ashley was on about. Bit thick me! Good story about the scaffold hitch, was it part of the fittings for the next person who moved in?
@zchuss16 жыл бұрын
It was still there many year's later as a couple I knew moved into my old flat and they continued to use it. I remember putting 30 tins of dog food on the shelf to test it when I first put it up. I used plastic coated fishing wire that had a breaking strain of over a hundred pounds and no stretch. Very thin and was hard to see from other side of the kitchen. It was originally supposed to be temporary but it worked so well I left it up.

This seem like it might be better than a marlinspike hitch for getting purchase on a line.
@KnottingKnots3 жыл бұрын
I think the advantage of the Marlinspike Hitch, is the speed at which it can be tied. But yes, this too is a good one to know. Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated.

Can you make this knot directly from a loop? It seems like you can make a loop with a bowline and then form the knot around the board. I'm not a knot expert, I don't know the correct terminology.

Great stuff. If you wanted to increase the friction on the board does reefing it or doing multiples help or hurt or would you go with a different knot?
@KnottingKnots6 жыл бұрын
I would have thought that maybe you could also put notches in the board for the rope to sit in?
@NMranchhand5 жыл бұрын
Johnny Debt I would think that another line, parallel to the plank, drawing the verticals slightly inward, would prevent the two ends from being pulled off the ends of the plank and give a rider something horizontal to hold.

Please don't tie this off with a slipknot. The knot is supposed to hold a suspended load of substential weight puting people in danger both on it and under it. If you want to use a slipknott atleast secure it with either a stick or a carabiner.

I started a long time ago to "over explain" as I have one subscriber who is blind. He and his granddaughter follow the videos, he listens and she watches. He ties the knot and if he goes wrong his granddaughter corrects him. A lovely little bond must be growing between them?
