Thanks for a great review Boomer - I bought and reviewed the N scale version so it's really interesting to see the commonalities and differences in good/bad/ugly between scales. I'm always amazed when there are essentially the same features between HO and N scale models. For us 1:160 folks it truly is a golden age 😀. A lot of the same issues as well - warping of the wire grab-ons and etched footplates seems present in about 30-40% of examples I've looked at. True about it being an easy fix, but yeah doesn't make me feel as enthusiastic my dollar is going into quality control, even understanding we're at the leading edge of what can be done on an N scale model. Something maybe more pertinent to N because of the model size and delicacy of handling - the cars are massively underweight without the coils (and the loaded cars will thus tip easily if you're a clutz like me), and I'll probably need to swap wheelsets as the ones on the model have a lot of rolling resistance. All told I'm glad I bought them though, really looking forward to weathering mine. Have a great day! - Eric

As a business owner myself, I feel like people can charge whatever they want. Especially since, it's not like we're talking about diabetes supplies. That said... It wasn't that long ago when I was a kid, me and my buddy would go to the big monthly DuPage Fair Grounds show. You could walk in with $20... Come away with 3-4 cars, some track, some magazines, and still have change left. I definitely miss those days. Side note: I'm a sucker for coil cars. Hey Boomer, happy new year!! With some time off I had some time or made some time to dig out a book out from storage, it is "The encyclopaedia of model railways" by Terry Alan published by Octopus books in 1979. Amazing how much hasn't actually changed at all, yep sure we now have DCC but the concept is all still the same. It is an absolutely amazing gift you are passing on to everyone here. Looking through this book I can see what possible inspired yourself as it did myself all those years ago. For myself it is nice to now be inspired by yourself to get everything I wanted to build all those years ago up and running now. Thanks again for all the hard work and dedication you put into show us how it should be done, wishing you a wonderful year to come. All the best

I have a few ScaleTrains engines and I ran one of the them outside as test in -25C. I noticed the top radiator grills on CN ET44AC, that were etched, deflected slightly but nothing major. The couplers are a perennial issue with Scale Trains in both HO and N scale, and the walkway deflection was true of the N scale version of this car as well. That said, I agree the N scale version was beautiful as well.

The photo-etch walkways pop due to the shrink of the plastic which causes the metal walk-way to deflect.

Can't wait to see it pick up a little road grime! It is true we have access to amazing models now, that 30 years ago didn't exist, unless you took the deep dive into detailing your models. That is a great facet of the hobby though. Buy that $15 Atlas car, chop it up and add $40 with or etched brass parts etc! There are so many amazing things we can do like DCC with electronic traffic control so you can automate movements on your layout, working signals. Amazing craftsman models, and scale lighting. The list goes on and on. Since I am steam era logging, and mining, trees are important to me. Your use of common materials to make hyper realistic trees to me is a critical component of what I want to do.

Scaletrains, Tangent and Exactrail are pricey but you’re unlikely to be disappointed. When Walthers came out with another run of coil cars a year or two ago they cost more than the premium lines. I dumbly assumed they must have new tooling hence the $20ish increase in price and bought one without opening the box. I was so pissed when I opened it and found the same half assed attempt at underbody detail I put it right up on eBay and haven’t bought another Walthers car since.
@boomerdiorama10 ай бұрын
It's funny the way that works. I have some Athearn Hoppers "Mainline" cars that look just as good as the "Genesis" line. On the other hand, like you say, I was really disappointed in some boxcars as well and promptly unloaded them. I have become quite picky now . . . and then there are the Athearn Genesis Tank Cars that I am addicted to as well. ;-)
@FHollis-gw4cc10 ай бұрын
Interesting info about the couplers. I bought some Kadee cars and when I went to change the couplers, I found that they had changed the couplers and the inside of the box to using a pointed pivot pin and that caused a distinct problem for me. the distance from the pivot pin to the outside end of the box has also changed. I use Sergent couplers and they require the old style round pivot pin. Now, I'm going to have to check out all my new purchases as I'm afraid other manufacturers will be going to the Kadee type of pocket. I don't really want to have to spend that kind of money and have to cut out the coupler bow to replace it. Add that to the ugly list!

Great review, really balanced. It does look nice but I hear you when you say about the price tag and minor defects. For the price you would expect at least couplers that work.
@boomerdiorama10 ай бұрын
Yeah. I am not sure what to think of that. I understand their affinity for accuracy, so they may have been going for the more realistic looking coupler over functionality. This is where I am thankful for the NMRA standards. Where would this hobby be without them? eg: - Kadee Couplers. ;-)
@eeclass2010 ай бұрын
The underside of the coupler box looks to have a grub screw, so I would guess a scale Kadee 58 will go in. Just need to be careful with the coupler cut lever when doing the swap. My thought would be about Scaletrains doing spare lids, angled and curved ', undec'd would be handy. I seem to recall some one doing alternative lids years ago for the Walthers car. Big thing for me is the cost! Two secondhand Red Caboose or Walthers cars for that price (even allowing for $to£ rate).

We have the same issue with couplers in N scale. Micro-Trains (formerly Kadee) is the gold standard for couplers in N scale, and all the others are "finicky" at best when it comes to coupling with Micro-Trains or some of the other brands, and a few don't even couple well to themselves! I am certain that adding Micro-Trains couplers to a car costs them more than designing and manufacturing their own, but they're also losing sales because I quite often just won't buy a car because I know I have to change out the couplers, and that's more trouble than it's worth.
@boomerdiorama10 ай бұрын
It's funny how we assume . . . "Oh well, it's just another set of couplers," when in fact it collectively adds up. This is why I like my Intermountain and Atlas. They look pretty good and function right out of the box. ;-)

I definitely feel you get what you pay for with Scaletrains and you make the purchase knowing you're going to get an amazing model. I have zero problem paying their prices knowing the product I'll receive. What I don't like is the companies that feel they can charge the Scaletrains/Rapido premium and produce inferior, generic products. Not to call out other manufacturers because are producing some decent products but I think they're capitalizing on the higher end manufacturers and charging way more than their more generic, less detailed models. I feel I get a lot more prototypical accuracy from a Scaletrains locomotive than I do, say, a Bachmann whose prices are absurd for the level of detail you get.. Just an opinion but they mostly look like toys, not models.
