I think a footbath in warm water with neem oil and castile soap would also be effective. I did this as a bath during a yerrible mite infestation and now every month or so as a general mite preventative when the weather is warm enough.

I can vouch for the Ivermectin treatment. Have used it for over a decade to treat leg mites, handy if you have a larger flock and want to treat them all (oiling up 40+ pairs of chook legs is time consuming! 😂 ). Usually do it in winter as well when they are off-lay anyways. Had one chook-lady tell me she used WD-40 to treat leg mites, I offered that "bonus would be that it would stop their legs squeaking too" .... I found out then that some chook ppl have no sense of humour! 🤣

Your videos are very enjoyable and informative! Is that chicken always so cooperative? You have some lovely hens.

Thank you so much. Yes, pretty much all of my chickens will behave like this when handled well. Of course she did scrabble a bit when I was swivelling her around the get to the other leg, as expected 😄

What is better than Ivermectin is "Fluralaner" which is the active ingredient in Exzolt (which is just a name brand). It is "EXACTLY" the same ingredient as in "Flexolt" (10g/l fluralaner) which is the oral treatment for mites and lice in sheep and about a fifth of the price. (Just buy some off your friendly sheep farmer☺). It can be added to the chickens drinking water or (as I do) directly into the chickens mouth via an eye dropper. I use1 drop per kilo. They did tests on birds from 3 weeks old to full grown adults and went up to 5 times the recommended dose with no ill effects..., however they found after the recommended dose it was just a waste. The best part is it IS recommended for chickens and has a zero egg withholding period. (14 day meat withholding).
@chickensinmygarden2 ай бұрын
Yes! I know Exzolt is effective but it hasn't been available here in small enough quantities for a few chickens. But your comment has made me check again and Fluralaner is available as "Bravecto" spot on for dogs and cats. Thank you so much!

Exzolt is a wonder drug. Hopefully, red mites and scaly leg mites won't become immune to it with over use. Everyone is using it in the UK and I read many think it might be a preventative -NO! it's only a cure. Great video and very interesting comments. Thank you.

Hi, in Germany the most chicken-kerpers use Ballistol oil ! It's very effective and biological newtral. I myselve use it for years very sucsessful. But it's a german product and I don't know if you can get it in New Zealand. May be via Amazon 😳 Have a good time Peter 🐓
@chickensinmygarden2 ай бұрын
Hi Peter 😊 From what I can see Ballistol is a mineral oil, safe for use, but not available by that name here. Maybe it's a bit like Baby Oil? It seems like a thinner oil not as thick as vaseline, right?
@peterdavid23812 ай бұрын
@@chickensinmygarden yes, it's a very thin oil... Have a nice day. I'll go to sleep now, Peter 🐓😊

Thanks so much!!!! I have a rooster as a pet, he's 8 months old and now I adopt a little chicken, do you recommend to wash his legs every week? They live inside house
@chickensinmygarden2 ай бұрын
If his legs are not dirty, they probably don't need washing. But washing could be a nice way to keep him used to being handled.

Does elector psp work? Thank you

It's not something I know much about but it seems like it would kill any mites in the chicken house but I don't think it is absorbed into the blood stream so would not reach the mites hiding in the chicken's skin.

I used VetRx and coconut oil after starting with epsom salt bath. Less discomfort almost immediately. Very effective and no chemicals. I do this immediately upon seeing the dark lines of each scale. I have never seen it escalte to that one photo.
@chickensinmygarden2 ай бұрын
No, that one photo was a very severe case from a vet website. It would take years of neglect to get that bad.
@vickyannpaintingwithoils2 ай бұрын
@@chickensinmygardenI had no idea it could get that bad. Poor chickies.
