most IT people are, in fact, windows people. Linux is more-so associated with software developers... Usually an IT person works at a facility, which likely uses windows computers. The && starts a new command. So, the sudo command was just marking the file as an executable, and the && said the next command would be to start it. If it was && sudo ./Connect, then the Connect app would have been opened as sudo. However, he could have just removed the && .... part and opened it directly through Dolphin to prevent the potential of closing it by closing Konsole.
@Lampe20207 ай бұрын
@@Straycatstrat10 I know that && starts a new command (which is run in the previous command returns 0). But still, downloading the file to your own home dir and then setting the run permission on it doesn't require root permissions. And wget gets data directly from the web, so if it has an RCE exploit (unlikely but not impossible) and you run it with sudo the damage potential is much greater than if the attacker only has your privileges and not root. So you should never get used to prepending every command with sudo. Principle of least permission or whatever it's called.
@Straycatstrat107 ай бұрын
@@Lampe2020 My bad, I didn't notice he ran wget as sudo, and I thought you had to run chmod as sudo. Yeah, running wget as sudo is not a good idea. I thought you were saying not to execute the connect program as sudo and thought you were misunderstanding the entire command. My apologies!

No need, just adding "& disown" to the command to connect, will allow the shell to be closed without killing the connecting process. Both making the "Windows" look cleaner, and avoiding the pitfall of them stumbling over the killswitch. =D

Nice setup you have, looks like a windows computer. I used to get regular tech support scam calls and used to do the same thing, it wastes hours of their time, and they hardly ever knew it was Linux, and they never were able to proceed with the scam. So many funny memories. It was fun loging into the machine via terminal remotely and crashing programs on the desktop. One of the remote access tools was wine supported but didnt fully work, so i had to tell them what was on the screen and control the mouse as they were not able to see/use it properly. Another time they were going through all the remote access tools and were able to remote access with one program but wanted to use Team Viewer and it kept going to the Linux download, so they asked me if it was a Linux computer and i just said it was a Dell. Another time they kept typing tree command, which was not installed, so i installed it and they later used tree. I also use a HDD and old hardware on VM, and also update the system when they get remote access so its very slow. These scammers have no idea about tech support. A good distro is Linuxfx and i think there is another one that is setup by default to look like Windows.
