My son was scammed about 15 years ago. He fell for a story online when he was looking to purchase a used motorcycle. I had a feeling right after it happened but adults don't consult moms. He was given a story about a deceased vet who's wife was selling his beloved motorcycle at a good price just so she didn't have to see it. It was out of state a delivery time and date was arranged after...GET THIS having paid in full over $7,000 by Western Union. I knew he screwed up amd fugured that money he borrowed from his retirement account was forever gone. He contacted the FBI and they have a task force working on this. He was added to a class action lawsuit covering these scans and little by little he received checks as FBI seized assets. He did get it all back eventually.

@@JB-db4gf, First, understand what the term “defunding the police” actually means. Hint: You won’t find the truth on right-wing propaganda channels. Second, do you really think even the best funded police give a rat’s ass about people in general? Do you think they’d pour resources into stopping scammers when they make a killing on victimizing the public instead? If you got pulled over for forgetting to signal for a turn and you explained to the police that you were on your way to prevent an old lady being scammed and time was of the essence, do you think they’d jump in their cars and help? Or just write you a ticket and call you a liar? Think about that before you think the police are helpful in most situations, and what can be done to change their reputation with the citizenry. There are some exceptionally good cops out there but they are the exception and not the rule.

I have dealt with those they have their own scam going on. They charge me $75 dollars non refundable to do a " background check". They give you a tour, then tell you there's a waiting list. After that collecting $75 all day, they tell the highest price for " the only apartment available" usually tell me only two bedrooms available no cheaper studio. They do it all month every month. I didn't give them the money. I asked to do a background check for free and told the rental office worker that I had so much per month. They used that condescending voice you know what I mean like I don't have credit made me feel like I would not feel at home. So I didn't see the model apartment, I grabbed a free popcorn, protien bar and coffee. My ride was a Mercedes so they probably felt like they were ripping rich people off. That was the second ad I answered. It's a scam. There is no apartment for me or you it's just $75 dollars all day long.

As an elderly disabled woman, it breaks my heart to see what scammers do to other vulnerable people. Scams that are "too good to be true" aren't really as effective as scams that play on other emotions such as fear and guilt. Scammers these days don't try to trick you into thinking you have a rare opportunity. The leasing office bit is what really ticked me off more than the scam. I get it, I truly do, but for the money we pay these people it never ceases to amaze me how hands off they become regardless of the circumstances. I lived with a violent individual and even after calls to authorities, very little could be done so my only recourse was leave...but they refused. I offered money, I told them I feared for my safety, etc, but they would only evict me or I'd have to magically produce a new tenant. I couldn't kill my credit or else I'd have no where to go. They didn't care one bit and it made me truly feel like a dollar to them instead of a person. What schmucks.

These companies intentionally hire people who treat the building and the tenants like it’s their dollar on the line and make it difficult for anyone to get anything they’re entitled to. I’ve had had so many problems with landlords refusing to give services and then had them change their mind later and send the cheapest labourers to meet the bare minimum for quality of services. They even refused to renovate their crumbling underground parking and allowed cars to get damaged by concrete falling from the ceiling for years until the apartment collapsed in Florida. Coincidentally, they’re now scrambling to fix all of the undergrounds in my area and it’s causing a huge nightmare for parking spaces between the four buildings on my side of the road alone. Completely shameless people.

@@HendrickT-bi4iw EXACTLY! I understand it's a slippery slope legally, especially in the this situation, but it does highlight that issue. They didn't care that I didn't feel safe in my own home and that was just such a gut punch. I didn't know what he'd do day to day. It scared me not knowing what was next and I felt like I was stuck for a whole year. I was a dollar to them, that was all. And indeed, that's the logic that just perpetuates these cycles.

I managed to send this person over two grand. I make more than that in a month, living in Silicon Valley...but it's the principle of the matter, you know! I was upset, but there was nothing to be done except cut off contact, at that point. You’ve done more in this video than the police and banks would ever do. It’s terrible banks don’t legally have any responsibility to deal with scammers like this because the victim has given their consent to move that money (in the uk that is) and I find it saddening that the people taking the money seem to be immune to any laws because they’re not even in the same country. First thing, I could not believe that receptionist at the first apartment complex where you went. "What does that have to do with us?" My god, how absolutely callous and uncaring! I mean, WTF! Then they kick you out like you are the problem. When you finally found her at her bank, you understood why she lashed out at you. She was saved by the skin of her teeth and she was scared and angry. It was "shoot the messenger" syndrome. She did not have anyone but you to vent her emotions to. The scammer was not there for her to tell off, so you got yelled at on their behalf. You guys are the only guardian angels these victims have, because the police really can't do anything until a crime has been committed. Once the money has been sent to them, it's gone and there's no getting it back. Thank you for what you do. Thank you for devoting your lives to helping these people. Gods bless you.

Something that struck me is when she said she had a Masters Degree. That says it all right there. We don't know everything. And if we think we do, that's when they get us. We always need to be learning because these scammers adapt when their scams get busted wide open.

vids like these are always amazing to see the victim get saved. her emotion of vulnerability was very understandable and it was good to see that she eventually noticed that the scammer payback group was her literal cavalry racing in to save the day. i enjoy watching the annoying scammers get their PCs and files destroyed, but its even better to see a victim saved in the act of being scammed. restores some faith back in humanity.

I agree! Instead of tax dollars going towards pathetic politicians for them to fly on private jets, I would MUCH rather see those tax dollars spent on something like this! It’s incredible how much good they do on a smaller scale, but imagine how much of a difference it could make to have a full task force of 100+ people dedicated to stopping scammers and protecting vulnerable people. Not enough is being done and it’s sickening. Just this past year my grandfather, who lives alone and is in a different state, got scammed out of over $50,000 (which out of shame he didn’t tell anybody until after it happened). He has had to file bankruptcy now. It’s awful what these scammers do to people every single day, destroying lives one by one, not caring about what it does to the people they are hurting. And the fact that nothing can be done about it is just plain wrong on so many levels.

Honestly can't fault the lady at the apartment too much, she doesn't know you, three guys show up asking about personal information about what is apparently an old lady. I know you were trying to do good, but she doesn't know that. If you're responsible for the private information of people, like who lives in what building and room etc, you can't be giving that out to anybody with an altruistic story. That's how people get identities stolen and get scammed in the first place. You could feel the emotional reaction through the video. They didn't even explain their goal or what they wanted her to do about it though. "One of your residents is being scammed. ....." as if she is trained to know exactly what to do in that situation. He should have followed up with what he wanted to do about it - does her want her to try to call the resident? To let him up to her door? He never says! So I get where's she's coming from, and she's right to offer up "call the police" since he just started and ended with "one of your residents is being scammed" with no follow-up requests or suggestions.
