I’ve used my investment money to buy card stock and a good printer. I now have all the singles I could ever want for under 25 cents per card. My playgroup loves inexpensive proxies too. Thanks Cashbro! The game you’re playing has made me reconsider the game I’m playing!

Nearly 30 years of playing, and I would hold my nose as I scribbled on a paper my "proxy", so I could playtests before buying, and I felt gross doing it. Now, I'm more than happy to visit my local library for free cards. 50 color pages per month, Free!

@em3sis - I found a great deal on a Canon Pixma Pro 200. It works amazingly well, I’m very, very impressed. Now to be fair, I’m no printer expert. I did some cursory YT research and went with it from others’ recommendations but I’m super happy. I got mine used from a friend but even brand new they’re around $5-600. Print off 10 jeweled lotuses and it’s paid for itself.

Why would you even bother to play this sh*t game if all your cards were worthless paper? A lot of the allure of Magic is the expensive cards and rarity. Magic has ALWAYS been play to win, players limited in their deck construction by their own cardpools - that is the fun of it. If you don't like pay to win then go play one of the many better games out there that are far cheaper. If all my decks were suddenly worthless paper sticky-taped to worthless cardboard, I'd just throw them out and play something else. Proxies dial every play group up to almost Cedh. Proxies destroy any interesting budget choices and you start seeing the same 'cards' over and over. Proxies eliminate any mistique. "Oh but poor people, oh but game-pieces" Yeah well Hasbro said this game wasn't for everyone. There are literally infinite games out there that you could play. All of my expensive cards in my decks hold memories. I can feel the power of the cardboard. What do your proxies feel like to you?
@mickeyhadley4281 Жыл бұрын
@damo9961- Wow lots to unpack there. Wish I could offer you a tissue to dry your eyes and wipe the drool from your chin, though it would be a proxy tissue. Magic isn’t a shit game, but it is an unsustainable model with the current costs and power creep for me. I’ve been playing Magic since 1998, Richard. Or Dick if you prefer? Anyway, Dick, I’m now retired on a fixed income so Cashbro is slowly pricing the sets and singles I want out of my price range. But I guess that’s my fault for not having retired a millionaire. Yeah, I could sell my collection of vintage cards to keep purchasing new sets but I don’t want to, nor should I have to. I’m curious, Dick, have you played much casual edh? I have and I noticed years ago that my decks constantly have to be upgraded or they get the shit kicked out of them which makes it not so fun. Obviously, Dick, you’re a left brain control freak type so what should I do?

What I like about FaB is that you can basically do what you did for old school MTG, and that's 300-400 dollars a set for a case 2-3 times a year and fully enjoy the hobby without feeling like you had to settle for the 'poverty box'. I really hope FaB stays away from the money grabbing schemes that MTG went for...

I apologize on behalf of all sellers. A little bit of inside info from someone who’s dealing with problems not because I sent them, no, the post man for this community stole them. He thought I was a dummy or because I ship out hundreds of packages and envelopes I wouldn’t notice. Well I’m 68 orders in about a week and a half 12 went missing. Nearly all the packages the one day. Recorded the convo of me confronting him as he came up my doorstep and me saying remember I handed you this and you scanned it I saw it, but yet, did you maybe not hit confirm and forget it in the truck maybe? Aka passively asking him if he stole it, and he gave me the ultimate “I think your dumb” excuse he said the eBay standard mail isn’t even usps mail, and, he knew very well the process of losing mail on eBay, acting it was fine because I get my money back. Well I let down customers who are real people. That’s why I’m literally after no joke over 1.4K sales and like probably 2000+ items itself sold at this point, I’m switching to other platforms, mainly mercari right now, but they are eating every dime I make. It’s insane the fees eBay takes to say “I sell on eBay”

Rudy, it's dead when no one cares anymore. When no one cares, then it doesn't matter anymore what WoTC does, and I haven't cared for a long time. A card game doesn't die loud, it dies silently. However, the flip side to that is "not caring" can be changed. It's just that they are trying too hard to hit every single random fandom in the planet when they don't need to, and they have competition from other sectors that feel more special than the magic the gathering cards.

The problem with certain Magic products being short printed is Wizards will probably print more later on. You just cannot trust Hasbro / Wizards because they lie to our face. I enjoy opening boxes but with the new Play booster boxes going up 30% plus we can expect a few more price increases in 2024, our group will not buy any sealed product. Most Collector boxes do not give you much value. Plus, with so many reprints, I will wait 3 to 6 months before I buy any singles. I am not in this to make money but I do not like Wizards destroying the collectability of the cards on the secondary market. We like drafting and playing Commander at the kitchen table. Thank you for the video Rudy.

@doctordistracto8390 Жыл бұрын
I mean it's cool if you like a game, but there's no reason to stop opening magic that doesn't apply to other games. People panic about one shop not buylisting magic anymore but Sorcery isn't on any buylist. There's no serious market for these other games, just some spurts here and there, a couple shops here and there, it's exactly like the big pile of 1990s dead games if you were around for that. As far as just for funsies, most of these other games don't have any event support, don't have any lore, are extremely hard to find people to play with. So in that respect non-magic games are a lot worse off than the 90s non-magic stuff. There are a few exceptions like FAB just like there's a few 90s games people still play. I just don't see any difference I think people are falling into the same old trap again.

Yu-Gi-Oh balances it quite well. They reprint everything playable but put the Ghost rares, Starlight rares etc in there for collectors. Mind you Yu-Gi-Oh can afford to do that because their boxes are cheap. You can't have cheap cards in a $150-500 Magic box or no-one would buy it.

Rudy is doing a lot of smelling his own farts here lol. He has often compared sealed MTG to the S&P 500. I am hoping he is smart enough to never say a specific product will beat the S&P 500 (pretty close in his Collector box claims in this video though - over 2x in 5 years is likely better than the S&P 500), but he has compared it many times. He also thinks only people who play MTG are investing in sealed, when his channel is extremely responsible for people who know nothing about playing MTG buying up sealed product. I have sold so many boxes to people saying they don't play, but Rudy/Alpha Investments say this is a good box. Also, it was likely very few people who said Rudy and PCG would fail. Card grading being propped up by a popular KZbinr will do just fine - like many other random businesses sponsored by XYZ influencer. It is likely just as few people who say PCG are the best slabs they have ever felt, which is probably blown out of proportion as many of the submitters have likely never submitted before - or else they wouldn't go PCG. Rudy deals in pure hyperbole, he always says he is right because the only other opinion is "everything is going to zero". Anyone with any sense knows that it is possible to be in between... no PCG isn't going to fail, but also, no it isn't a great grading service. Rudy recommending every sealed product doesn't mean "everything is going to zero", but it also doesn't mean that every product recommendation makes sense. Again, I always applaud Rudy for what he has done - in business and for MTG's exposure - and I have been watching his channel for entertainment for 5+ years. However, I really hope he starts taking on a better leadership role in the hobby and understand that he shouldn't swing the market - as it is terrible for the hobby. For an example, look at his Dr Who Collector box video where he talks about limited print run and that it is a good deal. Dr Who Collector shot up $60 a box the next day on TCG Player. Many of his Patreon subscribers and KZbin loyalists bought up boxes for inflated prices, and now you can get them for $200 or less. Yes, long-term it might be worth it for them to spend $250-$270 a box... but it should instead raise a red flags rather than a video smelling his own farts.

You’re right, the hype isn’t there for the new LotR collector boxes. My LGS still has a case and they’re worried it’s going to be dead weight. If you track it on TCG Player you can see that it’s about $278 but I don’t think it’ll bottom till about $250. Bad marketing, 1 of 1 Ring burnout, brutal return on value and hard to get serialized cards (which is expected) have soured many people to the set. At my LGS there’s only 2 of us buying the new LotR product regularly. Granted this plays to my benefit cause I’m not buying till it gets below $260.

Im curious about when the over printing started? I know that it was common by the time we got to late 2021. I really liked Stixhaven, im wonder if it was over done as well. Im guessing its likely.

Return to Ravnica in 2012 marked the change in print runs. Print-To-Demand became a thing. Edit: used to be anything pre RTR was all but guaranteed to go up but nowadays WotC will reprint anything, at any time and do it as many times as they want. Combine that with power creep and less and less people drafting the old boxes have lost their appeal. The expected value has always been low on the older (expensive) boxes but now it’s even lower AND nobody is drafting

It all began when they started to create products outside of draft boxes. So during our first trip to Eldraine in late 2019.

Standard sets have been print to demand for a long time now. Whenever people bought more, WotC printed more. Strixhaven, for instance, really hit that sweet spot with me, so I bought quite a lot more than usual. Don't worry, none of it is sealed any more ;) When you think about "overprinting", you need to limit your focus to the specialty sets. The Masters/Remastered, and, most recently Universes Beyond. Also the Un-Sets, or stuff like Conspiracy/Battlebond. These were "limited print run", but it's left to us to speculate what "limited" might mean. It doesn't make sense to speculate about Standard set print runs. They were all huge.

Here's the bottom line, Rudy. And take what I'm about to say with whatever amount of salt you need. Magic needs players. People who actually play the game are the people who sustain the game. And right now, people aren't playing magic like they used to. You need people investing in Standard decks. Going to tournaments and playing. You need people diving into Pioneer and Modern and Legacy because they liked the metagame standard and limited provided. You need people building their commander decks from new cards and buying boxes of cardboard to make new decks. Nobody. And I mean NOBODY is doing that for the GAME aspect now. Right now, magic is a collector's market, not a player's market. Now, collectors can sustain magic for a while. And I think its gonna be a couple of years before we start to see a downturn in sales of boxes. But it is currently trending out the door. This is what will inevitably kill magic: The excitement of PLAYING THE GAME is gone. Did the pandemic kill it? Did removing pro play kill it? Are LGS' killing it? Amazon? Local tournaments? Arena? WOTC only shilling for whales? The economy? Inflation? Prices going up? Truly, it is a combination of all of these. But if people wanted to actually PLAY the game, literally none of that would matter. Magic is dying because people don't want to play or can't play. I'm not going to be a doomsayer and say "Magic is dead" or "Magic is dying and it can't be saved." But Magic IS DYING. Investors and collectors can keep this going for a bit. But we need players to come back soon. Otherwise magic will die. And it's gonna stick this time.

Draft, sealed, and cube is all I enjoy. Sadly if I put what spent into limited into commander and modern staples, lands etc, I'd have some excellent decks to play at my LGS. Commander especially seems like alot of fun.

What i don't get about "game pieces" is that you would have to open about 5 set booster boxes just to get enough game piece basic lands to make a deck so wtf are they talking about

Sorry to say, but the inherent collectable nature and scarcity of them gave the cards higher value from the very beginning, and since cash is tanking, any appreciating asset class becomes an investment.
