It bothers me that Carmella sits there stone-faced and unaffected when someone else is expressing the pain and trauma she put them through, but we are expected to feel so sorry for her and her trauma, which has nothing to do with the person in front of her. She is not the victim in any of these situations, and they need to stop letting her play like she is. She uses her trauma as an excuse to inflict the same pain or worse on others.

The main thing that got my attention in the Elise episode was that Carmella showed no emotion until the conversation topic shifted to her and her getting support, then it was emotional and crying. I think that's why her more 'genuine' apology still sounded a little disingenuous to me as well--it reminded me of watching this documentary on a serial killer who hurt children, had absolutely no remorse or genuine apologies for the atrocities he committed--but then the topic of his own childhood abuse came up. Suddenly it was all waterworks and sobs, and it made me think 'how could you hold so much pain and empathy for yourself and your own trauma, but have absolutely none for the victims you created through the same circumstance?'. They only have empathy for themselves and their own pain; everyone else's pain, especially those afflicted by themselves, is beyond the bounds of sympathy for them and is almost trivial.

I'm not trying to justify Carmella scamming people but I think the lack of job opportunities for trans people in her area might have been a decisive factor. It doesn't make it okay but she may have been in a difficult position, on top of her self-image issues. I am trans and job security is a key concern for my community. In my country, a few years ago, there was a law of affirmative action towards the job inclusion of trans people and I saw it change many lives. I don't imagine there's something like that where she lives. So, in her case giving her a platform may lead to something positive for her. Also, my uncle is named Carmelo (it was also my grandfather's name) so when Jayda said "who the hell is named Carmella?", I cackled. 🤣

Something I want to explain to you that you lack an understanding of... Why someone with body image issues would put themselves in this situation. The answer is easy, loneliness. As someone who suffered from ED's, body image issues and abuse my entire life... I struggled to connect with people in the real world and the loneliness ate away at me every single day. One thing I did to maintain my sanity was reach out for human connection online and I did so through Catfishing. I felt nobody would want to get to know me as I was, so I had to concoct a fake persona and a false reality in order to feel worthy enough of friendship. It still breaks my heart thinking of how lonely and isolated I was for so long, desperate for someone to talk to... desperate to feel loved but too afraid and insecure to pursue anything beyond the internet. Anyways, thats why someone like this would put themselves in a high pressure situation. A moment of human connect is worth the stress, because solitude can become absolutely unbearable.
