Step back into the shadows of 18th-century Colonial Williamsburg, where power, prestige, and greed collided in one of the most notorious scandals of colonial Virginia. Scandal in Williamsburg: The Crimes of Chiswell & Robinson uncovers a tale of murder and financial corruption that shook the foundations of Colonial Williamsburg and Colonial Virginia.
In this latest documentary from Quest Capsule, we explore the complex and intriguing life of Colonel John Chiswell. From his early years, business ventures to his prominent position in colonial society, Chiswell appeared to be a man of power and prestige. However, his fortunes took a dramatic turn, culminating in a crime that would forever tarnish his legacy-a murder at Mosby Tavern in Cumberland County, Virginia.
As part of this journey, we set out to deepen our understanding of the crime by attempting to locate the exact site of the murder. If we succeed in finding this historic location, we can begin to weave together the scattered pieces of what happened, shedding light on the details of the crime that forever shifted Chiswell’s fate.
The documentary also explores a far-reaching financial scheme, orchestrated by a political powerbroker in Colonial Williamsburg. As we peel back the layers of this dramatic tale, you’ll discover how the intertwined lives of Chiswell and John Robinson-Treasurer of the Colony and Speaker of the House of Burgesses-played a pivotal role in shaping the economic and political landscape of Williamsburg. Revered for his leadership but secretly embezzling treasury funds, Robinson’s alliance with Chiswell, and their ultimate downfall, offers a revealing glimpse into the fragility of power and the price of ambition.
With dramatic themes of betrayal, scandal, and societal decay, this gripping documentary shines a light on a story often forgotten in the pages of history. Through carefully captured visuals and story narration, Scandal in Williamsburg: The Crimes of Chiswell & Robinson offers a closer look at a world where decisions shaped lives, reputations, and the future of the colony.
Join us as we delve into one of Colonial Williamsburg’s darkest chapters-where honor was lost, and legacies were destroyed. Will the truth ever be fully known? Find out in Scandal in Williamsburg: The Crimes of Chiswell & Robinson.

Wow, that was an amazing discourse. It rang special to me as the Chiswell Bucktrout House is the first Colonial Home I lodged in on my first visit to Colonial Williamsburg in 1985. I remember hearing of some nefarious dealings and crimes associated with Chiswell, and this video did an amazing job of binging the times and affairs to light. Thank you and your team, well done. I have missed you. This is brilliant with amazing photography and editing and the story. Whenever I see pictures of the capital I am reminded that George Washington was a burgess for 15 years; and often stayed at Christiana Campbell‘s. He was a student at William and MARY with my ancestor John Waller, where they both studied surveying. In January 1777 John Waller appeared at the capital to enlist in the Virginia Militia; and George Washington immediately made him a captain on his military staff. I love your videos of course I am subscribed; and I hope to see more soon. Thank you for getting my mind off of the drama of this election.. --Jeffrey Hancock Shonert, William and MARY class of 1972. ❤
