The neighbour when I was a little boy used to call surströmming a delikatess. He ate it all summer and everybody knew when because he started singing snapsvisor and got quite drunk and fell through the bushes(many times). Then he would get out his badminton net and start yelling my name even if I was asleep. He reeked of surströmming, my family went inside whenvever he ate it since it ruined the taste and smell of whatever we was eating.

French here, I can shed some light of why Jacques with a "s" at the end from the start of the video. This ''s'' comes from the Latin form of the nouns. Whatever the remote origin of each of names was, Greek, German or other, they have all been Latinised at some point. Gilles was Aegidius, Jacques was Jacobus (because Jacques is a lexical doublet of Jacob), Georges was Georgius, Charles was Carolus, etc... In French, we kept the ''s'' at the end of the Latin form for a lot of stuff. When it comes to first names, authors during time have respected the rule of the "s" at the end. Thus Jacques with a "s". However, when these words are used as surnames, the ways of writing them vary. And there are no rules about keeping the "s" from the latin form.

Ah yes, surströmming. Once upon a time, two of my friends made a drunken bet that if either of them ever got their hands on a can of surströmming, they would eat it together and the winner would be whoever could go longer without throwing up. Funnily enough I had a trip to Sweden planned the very next weekend (which they didn't know about) and I made sure to grab some for them. I was standing about 5 meters away filming when they cracked it open, and even at that distance the heinous stench was almost overpowering. And for the record it was a tie, as both of those dinguses threw up as soon as they tried to swallow a bite of it.

Depends on where from the US you grew up in or currently live in. Sweden and parts of Norway are very similar to Canada if you live up north. South Sweden and parts of Denmark are more similar to suburban or “bigger” American cities. I would recommend maybe visiting one of the countries before you decide, and maybe talk to some of the hundreds of thousands of expats living in either Sweden, Norway or Denmark to get a general overview. I would only recommend Finland if you absolutely love nature, otherwise it can be a pretty stark contrast to what you are used to in the US. Hope you found my answer helpful!

Suströmming is a whole process, you open it underwater to avoid the worst of the smell, and you only eat tiny bits of it on tunnbröd with potatoes and chives and sourcream and stuff. Its actually super nice when you do it that way but its just not worth it and youre gonna feel the smell for days, even if its a neighbour.

Greenland have not voted for independence, they are able to though it's part of an agreement with Denmark, they are split on the issue because Denmark pays a big part of their budget, 2.the story is in some ways like Native Americans as there have been a time where the Government tried to make the Inuits Danish, and they took a group of their children and adopted them to Danes, they also removed the possibility for some Inuit women to bear Children, however they also did that to some Danish women they deemed to not be able to raise children, it's the ugly truth of most Governments in the past of most countries, the difference however is Vikings from Norway actually settled in Greenland about 300 years before the Inuits migrated from Canada, the Natives Vikings first meet was called Thule people and they were not related to Inuits, the Thule people disappeared when the Inuits arrived, according to Inuit folklore they were scared of the Inuits, anyway Denmark ruled Norway and therefore Greenland , Norway was lost in a war with Sweden but Greenland, Iceland and Faroe Islands remained Danish, Iceland got independence in 1950 , Greenland and Faroe Islands have their own Government and representation in the Danish parliament plus the possibility to vote for independence so in some regards it's very different from Native in America as Greenland was not taken from the Inuits it was taken from Norway, so it's quite wrong to call it a colony or Denmark an Empire, we was a long time ago though hundreds of years ago with areas like the Virgin Islands and parts of Africa, this guy in the video makes it sound like Denmark earns a lot of money on Greenland and that's not true although Greenland has lots of minerals it's very little that have ever been utilized and it's also the Government in Greenland who makes such decisions, it's quite expensive to get the minerals because Greenland is so isolated and the ice covers 80% of the land, also there are concerns of the not destroying the nature ect.
