Thank you for that video on how to do the sole using rubber powder and glue. I think I’ll stick with just old tires and forgo the crumb rubber and glue but it did give me an idea on how to make my own rubber sole to stitch onto the bottom of the shoe.

I took a private class with Jason back in 2015 at his home in portland. It was a lot of fun and an amazing experience. The guy is extremely smart and has a lot of experiences in many different fields of craftsmanship. This turn shoe is very easy to make and will last you the rest of your life. I still have all the tools and everything you see in the video to make another pair. I have not done it yet but I am going to make one out of deer hide. The ones in the video and the ones I made are made with beefalo hide.

This is one of the highest production value tutorials I've ever seen. Stop motion animation that isn't shaky from frame shifting (excellent for pausing on without getting blurred stills). Bright lighting and crisp frames. Every pause point is basically a 3D diagram. The kind of music one imagines might be played around a camp fire circle of crafters. This should take an award at a film festival or something. How long did this take?

Im assuming the sole is made from ground up rubber tires and contact cement. Interesting. Loved the stop motion. That was a lot of work and time in of itself.

Rubber soles defeats any Earthing qualities. Maybe try a natural composite material for the sole?

@@chris3954 The interesting thing about earthing is that once you touch with your hand or other part of your uncovered body you are earthed. So if Im out working in the garden with my hands in the dirt it doesn't matter if the soles of my shoes are rubber or not. Not likely you are benefiting from earthing even with just leather shoes without any glues or anything. Bare feet help but I think earthing is more scam than not but I do hate shoes and much rather go barefoot as often as possible. I've not yet found any real science on the earthing thing.

As someone who goes barefoot nearly 100% of the time, including in cities, government offices, airports, restaurants, museums, pig sties, cactus-covered mountains off-trail, i often find myself perplexed when people who are too drenched in antisocial media approach me and share their enthusiasm for 'Earthing' with me, thinking that i must be convinced of its benefits. From my perspective, even 'energy' is a bit too wu for me to talk about in most company. If you're willing to tell me your deepest, darkest experiences with rocks and plants speaking to you, then yes, i'll agree that 'energy' is very likely 'real'. Because i've heard the snow myself. I've had that 'someone's watching you' moment in a neighbourhood in Pennsylvania, and that 'someone' was a puma. So yeah, maybe i'm a bit more resistant to respiratory infections because i go barefoot, but how much tire dust and diesel soot am i imbibing through my porous feet? If 'earthing' is about electricity, in the conventional way of understanding electron flow, then as you say, you get 'earthed' the moment you touch the earth with your hands. If it's about 'energy' in a more new-agey way, which admittedly may have some truth to it, i certainly don't want anyone using it on me to ensnare me with their beliefs. If i hadn't given up footwear altogether, i'd be wearing these rubber-soled turnshoes. Leather soles are simply an absurd choice to use for pavement, and adherence to an inflexible ideal there to me shouts 'conspicuous consumerism' regardless of how locally-sourcipated and organical the ingrediments are. Someone with the resources to repeatedly buy fancy, inadequately durable footwear, should either remove themselves from the concrete jungle to a green one, or use their considerable resources to agitate locally and remove the concrete jungle, replacing it with permeable greenways. But here i go shoulding all over the internet. Forgive me, it must be time for more quelite tea.

@@thapeloheath I don’t go shoeless quite that much but as much as I can. As a youngster I used to go tromping around the desert barefoot and in the farmers fields and ponds. One year I was mucking around in one of the ponds catching frogs and pollywogs and stepped down on something hard yet it had a texture of sandpaper. At least that is what it felt like. No pain just sandpaper and hard. So I moved my feet and mucked around in the mud in the area until I found what it was. It was hard and smooth as glass. So I grabbed it and lifted it out of the muck to find out it was the bottom of a large mason jar but on one edge was a large triangular spike that stuck up about 2 or 3 inches. I can’t really say but it was pretty tall. I figured out quickly that what I had stepped on was that spike of glass from the mason jar. The sandpaper feel was that going into the bottom of my bare foot. I jumped out quickly of the mucky water and mud and rinsed it off in the pond. It was all I had to clean it with. It bleed really bad for a few minutes so it sorta cleaned itself out. Since I wasn’t supposed to be there I never said a word. Since I had been in the water for a good hour the feet were a little water logged and Im guessing a little numb. The sandpaper was it cutting into the flesh and across nerves. I did not sever any tendons nor did I receive and stitches, though I should have had it fully cleaned out and stitched. It healed quickly and well and left no scar that is visible today. Since then I have not gone barefoot nearly as much as I had before. I’d climb around on rocks and hot sand and through the sage brush and what not. I didn’t care. I was the earth. I am still today a bit more careful about where I put my bare feet. An interesting thing to note. We live on a giant magnet inside a thin bubble of gasses and bombarded with radiation and yet we thrive in the environment we were given. We are the Earth. It costs nothing.

I love this! My favourite thing about it is seeing you use the marks/ tatooes(?) on your index finger and thumb to transfer measurements to your pattern. That said, I couldn't work out why you marked the pads of your finger and thumb with a sharpie before drawing the lines on the upper.

no clue. some sort of rubber. Using plasti-dip might be worth a try, maybe applying it thinner just for some grip.

Chopped up tire and glue, how after regarding wear a pure leather sole is more comfortable and closer to historical examples we have

@@spiritwolf5535 yeah, the main purpose of the rubber seems to be either slip-reduction or making a sole more like a modern shoe. Leather is more comfortable, but also slips pretty badly, on wet grass. The traditional solution was hobnails, but these slip on *hard* surfaces. A much lighter coating of some clear rubber/rubberized paint would work, I think, to solve those issues.
