This was a great period movie, especially with those little, long lost details of the pre-movie/pre TV burlesque houses of the late 19th & early 20th century America. Supposedly writers had help from old-timers with rework. One of my favorite are the shills in audience, "finding" prizers. This was old time, working-class humor. In the '50s, the timing and style was adapted to live TV.Truly something for anyone interested in media to watch.

This was close to reality based on the Minsky Brother's enter into the Theartre/Stage business. They made it through the prohibition,stock market crash of 29, depression in the 30's folowed by the battle with mayor Le Guardia in New York who won a second term in 1935 when Minsky's expect his moral-cops to end with hopes Le Guardia would lose in 1935. A Minsky brother went to paris and saw the Moulin Rouge follies and the Can-can dancer 1925,in the 1930's it was ripe to get risky with flesh.

Why is it so hard for people to find movies in their original language? Pick any English movie you've ever seen an I guarantee you that you'll find a German copy on the net before you find an English one.

Haven't seen this in years. I doubt this movie was historically accurate or really meant to be. Its not like Burlesque ended because of a pair of tits. Besides most of this is vaudeville anyway and vaudeville didn't die because of stripping. The film was basic paradigm of a lot of American filmmaking-the journey from innocence to experience, ignorance to knowledge. The film works only halfway because of a terrific cast-Robards, Wisdom, Elliot-terrific actors. I do agree about Ekland though

Someone should do a MPC (Mario Paint Composer) video for the music that plays when Rachelle is on stage.

What is the name of that music instrumental that Rachelle was dancing to? I would like to hear a version this instrumental without the sounds. Someone should really upload a remake version of this music so we can hear what it sounds like without all those noises.

There are a number of classic movie striptease scenes where I'd like to hear the music without the audience reactions. "Blaze" and "Steptoe and Son" are a couple examples. Unfortunately, the striptease music tends to be left off these films' OSTs (if any exist), and we have yet to see any AI algorithms that can remove applause, cheers, and catcalls from a sound clip.

someone online should really make a instrumental recreation of this so we can hear what it would have sounded like without all that noise

@DaveLH I agree someone really needs to make a recreation and cover version of that striptease music that was in this. Especially since it's now the 55th anniversary of the film.

Don't forget Bert Lahr as Professor Spats, he died in December 1967 and never saw the full edit that came out in 1968.His last movie and previously known as the Lion in The Wizard Of Oz. Ironically, one of the Minsky brothers married Billie Burke in 1912 and while the talking movies competed with their stage acts, Billie Burke acted in the 1939 Wizard Of oz as the good witch of the east Glinda.Wow,your wife joins the team trying to kill live the same vaudville you earn money from.

I remember reading that Bert Lahr once said the reason he wasn't in more movies was, "There just aren't that many lion roles."

I read in Norman Lear's book that when Britt Eklund showed her breasts, that wasn't her, they auditioned tons of women and they found who's breasts were similar to hers, heheh

Barbara Eden or Elizabeth Montgomery or Audrey Hepburn should have played Rachelle, she would have been magnificent if she played that character instead. I would have loved it if Audrey Hepburn would have been Rachelle. Seeing Audrey Hepburn doing that dance would have been sexy.

Hepburn was almost 40 when this was made, she was too old to play a naive Amish farmgirl...and I can't imagine sophisticated, elegant Audrey Hepburn doing a burlesque dance and popping her top! She would have refused in a heartbeat! Barbara Eden and Elizabeth Montgomery were both in their mid-to-late 30s at the time, so again, maybe a bit old. In 1968 Britt Ekland was a rising star and only her 20s, so halfway believable in the role. Not to say they were too old to do the dance or too old to be beautiful...just too old to be playing innocent, virginal, naive farmgirls.
@RingoandCarlin
@RingoandCarlin 11 ай бұрын
@michaelcornett444 they could have played it. They had ways of looking young back then. I can see why you say Audrey Hepburn would have said no which is disappointing because she was a rare gift and that's why she was perfect in My Fair Lady

@@RingoandCarlin Well, those techniques (tons of makeup, soft focus) usually only end up calling attention to the fact that they're trying to hide someone's age. But there was no way in hell Hepburn would have done this; she was very careful of her image and overtly sexy/vampy was simply not part of that image. Ekland was a hot property then, an up-and-coming sex symbol, so you can understand why they went with her. Probably also cheaper than an established actress.
