Scania, great truck BUT, an automatic gearbox has no business on a skip lorry, cruising up a motorway from a factory to a distribution centre absolutely, but when manoeuvring skip lorries in tight spaces often where mounting kerbs close to parked cars, walls and/or fences etc or when off road ie construction sites the sensitivity of a manual box and clutch is best. Standard manual 4 over 4(range change) For 18t and standard 6 speed manual for smaller. Hyva, great loader BUT, Hold to run button is ridiculous, pointless and terrible design feature. 3 hands are needed to use it if an operator wants to combine loading/off-loading control with extending/retracting of telescopic control either independently or synchronised for fast efficient loading when blocking roads or more often, loading/off-loading skips on gradients, uneven ground or at angles as access to get square on with skip is a factor. A very common real world reality of the job. And the simpler sheeting system with the roller elevating behind the cab and fixed sheet arms is better. Granted this one eliminates potential ripping of sheet from snagging on skip contents when covering/ uncovering skips. But sometimes sheets and arms can get caught on skip and or contents so having expensive tooling exposed on the extremities of the sheet system ie roller and hydraulics within the sheet arm is high risk of expensive damage. Much preferable to replace a cheap ripped sheet than an expensive bent roller or ram. Apart from a couple of very minor design issues with both truck and loader equipment which individuals are always going to have Scnia/Hyva is definitely a combination of the 2 best products out there.

Synchronous extend of arms isn't needed - one hand should be able to operate both single levers and while doing so be able to apply a twist to reduce or increase one lever relative to the other if one arm needs a different amount of movement. It sounds like you have skip lorry operataing experience. Can't say I have that - so my preference would be to use the tip hooks as skip clamps for travelling - I'm pretty sure I've seen this done in the past - so once the skip is loaded, it is clamped in place at the back with the tip hooks. I'd appreciate your thoughts on this ? Your comment about auto boxes and manual clutch is interesting. Considering most bin lorries - which often need to do careful manoeuvring are now fitted with auto boxes. Have you experience of using an auto box in tight spaces ? With car brakes, it's not an issue but I've never tried it with truck brakes. Another option that should be available is to force the gearbox to stay in the lowest gear - to prevent the vehicle going too fast. I don't know what the highest lowest ratio an auto box will use but I think it could be 3rd, 4th or 5th. Even flooring the accelerator with an empty truck may not (& probably won't) get you into bottom gear. You need a stopped, fully loaded truck on a steep uphill to force an auto box to use 'crawler'. But, if you can force the box to use crawler, you should find the truck would climb kerbs at tickover ! Hmm, the cops would be after you for kerb crawling :)

Can I ask How many skip drivers actually stick with in the recommended weight limit of axle or vehicle weight, unless the skip trucks have weight limits on them to let the driver know how would they know until they get on to the weigh bridge to tip off. I’m just taking my CPC course and I’ll be looking into driving for a local skip company. They have a 3.5, 7.5 and a 10ton vehicle, can I also ask how do EU driving hours work as your doing a combination of driving and other work, do you stick to 45 mins after 4.5hrs or 15 mins then 30 mins after the 4.5hrs or can you get away with 6hrs combined work with a 15 min break then with in the next 3hrs taking you upto 9hrs you then take the next 30 mins
