MURS freqs (vhf) can also be fairly active in urban and suburban areas. If you can see the value of this capability, also put in Marine vhf channel 16 and a few working channels such as 68, 69, 71 & 72. Congrats! you are now your local EMMCOM for non radio dorks who picked up a radio in desperation during an emergency. 👍 CB would be good to monitor in an emergency too. You never know who might need help and what radio they might have laying around. If you're also a ham, consider adding this capability to take the lead on uniting the radio services and illustrating the usefulness of ham radio to all the "normal people". 😉

It's not the same animal anymore, at least not in my neck of the New England woods. A couple of weeks ago, I drove from Oklahoma City OK to San Antonio TX scanning GMRS all the way. All I picked up was a couple of people trying to find some address in Austin and an occasional short transmission as I drove past a big store. In Oklahoma City, there's a repeater that gets some action pretty regularly, apparently people using it for a business, but otherwise, you won't hear much in central OK. As much as I dislike the shitshow of CB, it's still the only way to get information about road conditions in most of the country. Unsurprisingly, things are different in the more heavily-populated parts of the country.

For the most part, there are many individuals listening (monitoring), but few who are seeking to "converse with strange men" (as some would say) Over time, people responded to my requests for radio checks, conversations began and some who were monitoring joined in. Today, there are 8 of us who regularly use The Villages repeater to converse of happenings in our areas. It's totally unlike the CB radio of yesteryear where imbeciles and jerks crowded the airwaves. I think to some degree, the dead or alive pronouncement accuracy depends on the general region where you live. CB radio is very alive among a subculture of operators as is 2m ham and of course your GMRS as well. It just doesn't seem that all radio service is popular as a hobby interest in all places. A few years ago there was a major trend for hams to be very active on 2m local, but that has waned a bit with many like myself being radio inactive and others going HF for world 🌎 wide capability. Personally I would be more active if it didn't require more investment in radio gear and license to explore the other services and to get my 2m set up as a base unit. Maybe GMRS is in my future since it would cover all my simplex needs while license requirements cover an entire family simultaneously.
