Interesting it is like that where you live. We are 2-1/2 hrs away from a city out in the middle of the high desert at 4600' ft and in out community we have approx 40 people in our GMRS club and we are in the process of installing a big repeater on one of the hills out here. We've done a lot of testing with mobile and hand held GMRS radios and found them to work significantly better than expected. Main reason is we have Cell phone dead areas and the GMRS allows us to comm in case of an emergency.

I know this is a video about simplex channels but if you just want to see if your investment is worth it, why not? I hear lots of traffic on simplex here north of you in New England and this state is known for massholes and taxes on everything which includes breathing. If you get me. I am proud of you sir. This is what I was talking about. For anyone here who wants more radios, imagine the traffic you might hear doing this during an emergency such as in NC. MURS freqs (vhf) can also be fairly active in urban and suburban areas. If you can see the value of this capability, also put in Marine vhf channel 16 and a few working channels such as 68, 69, 71 & 72. Congrats! you are now your local EMMCOM for non radio dorks who picked up a radio in desperation during an emergency. 👍 CB would be good to monitor in an emergency too. You never know who might need help and what radio they might have laying around. If you're also a ham, consider adding this capability to take the lead on uniting the radio services and illustrating the usefulness of ham radio to all the "normal people". 😉

As an old CBer myself, I find this video mostly accurate. CB is more dying than dead, but is well on its way out. The idiots who currently occupy the 11 meter band are just rude, vulgar and ridiculous types compared to 30+ or even 15+ years ago. It's not the same animal anymore, at least not in my neck of the New England woods. These people swear worse than cabbies and truckers on the air, they threaten death when they dislike someone and they even stalk people all while dropping hours long musical carriers. It's just an untamed jungle now and it's ugly.

I hear people on regular CBs all the time and GMRs too, plus the Hams on their repeaters too. Problem with GMRs is its distance. GMRs can't do skip. While Ham is too rigid to talk too. I talk to Hawaii, Tennessee, & Kommifornia on CB all the time. Lots of truckers & Spanish speakers talking on CBs all the time here in Nevada. I also have GMRs & a GMRs repeater too. I say, use what communications that will reach the other person, can always switch every time.

My daily commute takes me 70 miles round trip through the western San Joaquin Valley, and the majority of traffic on GMRS is either farm/farm truck operations, or in Spanish--usually both. A couple of weeks ago, I drove from Oklahoma City OK to San Antonio TX scanning GMRS all the way. All I picked up was a couple of people trying to find some address in Austin and an occasional short transmission as I drove past a big store. In Oklahoma City, there's a repeater that gets some action pretty regularly, apparently people using it for a business, but otherwise, you won't hear much in central OK. As much as I dislike the shitshow of CB, it's still the only way to get information about road conditions in most of the country. Unsurprisingly, things are different in the more heavily-populated parts of the country.

The area of Florida that I am in is within the signal range of an excellent repeater in The Villages. For the most part, there are many individuals listening (monitoring), but few who are seeking to "converse with strange men" (as some would say) Over time, people responded to my requests for radio checks, conversations began and some who were monitoring joined in. Today, there are 8 of us who regularly use The Villages repeater to converse of happenings in our areas. It's totally unlike the CB radio of yesteryear where imbeciles and jerks crowded the airwaves. Instead, there are people who don't want that "in your face" "10-4" bullshit and seek out intelligent conversations instead.

I think to some degree, the dead or alive pronouncement accuracy depends on the general region where you live. CB radio is very alive among a subculture of operators as is 2m ham and of course your GMRS as well. It just doesn't seem that all radio service is popular as a hobby interest in all places. A few years ago there was a major trend for hams to be very active on 2m local, but that has waned a bit with many like myself being radio inactive and others going HF for world 🌎 wide capability. Personally I would be more active if it didn't require more investment in radio gear and license to explore the other services and to get my 2m set up as a base unit. Maybe GMRS is in my future since it would cover all my simplex needs while license requirements cover an entire family simultaneously.

My AT 6666 PRO provides 2000 miles of fars consistently on LSB. 11 METERS CB channels 37 and 38.

It's funny. I'm in the Waco, TX area. All is quiet on GMRS except for 1 repeater in Troy, TX about 40 miles away. that has some knuckleheads on at about 3:30pm almost everyday. They just talk nonsense. It's so flat out here, I can hit that repeater from my house.

I think so.. There are two small airports within 10 miles or so of me that both have aerobatic teams based in them.

Most of the GMRS audio sounds about as good as a cheap Cb, with a bad antenna, with the signal and voice fading in and out. Too much noise comes through in the transmission for my sensitive old ears;). Sometimes It's like trying to listen in on a conversation happening behind closed doors. Pump up the audio folks ! Give me some good old overdriven Amplitude Modulation.... 280 said it, and I'm back quiet....:)

Have the majority of truckers moved to GMRS or is 27Mhz still the highway norm? Here in Au 27Mhz CB is all but extinct now.
@alltheruss
@alltheruss 6 күн бұрын
Truckers that still have a radio will still use 27Mhz. Many new drivers won't install a CB due to the garbage the band is nowdays.

I guess it depends where you are located because cb is booming here in Arkansas and gmrs is all but dead except for the occasional travelers passing through 1 or 2 per week while cb is all day every day

No one identified themselves with their official FCC call sign or used the phonetic alphabet. I’m afraid I have to report this to our overlords, but I gave you fair warning. They are cracking down on this kind of thing. I know, because I have an amateur radio license, which has given me great knowledge and expertise. You better pray to Xenu they don’t show up at your house or send you a STRONGLY worded letter. I bet you’re causing spurious emissions as we speak.
