"Scarborough Fair" (Roud 12, Child 2) is a traditional English ballad. The song lists a number of impossible tasks given to a former lover who lives in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. The "Scarborough/Whittingham Fair" variant was most common in Yorkshire and Northumbria, where it was sung to various melodies, often using Dorian mode, with refrains resembling "parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme" and "Then she'll be a true love of mine".

Why have our governments tried to deny and denigrate our beautiful culture? Music, Art,Science and everything else.

Same you could have asked "why physicians try to deny and denigrate the digestive system?" Ever considered that the place where you now live is built on layers and layers of ruins and bones? Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Romans, Celts, Danes, Normans - French Huguenots, and more. Not to speak about what the British Empire did around the world. You don't get to exploit the riches of India without eventually ending with a Prime Minister of Indian ancestry and former subjects of the Empire in your streets. It's merely fair.

@@robnewman6101 I believe. The fair declined in the 17th Century but was revived for a short time in the 18th. "It’s believed that the song can be traced back to an older, more obscure Scottish ballad, The Elfin Knight, which dates at least as far back as 1670 or even earlier."

In the reign of Queen Victoria there was considerable interest in things medieval, particularly among the ruling classes. The notorious Eglinton Tournament of 1839 attempted to revive the medieval grandeur of the monarchy and aristocracy.
