The Rebuttal: Starting with King Graham. King Graham doesn't always wear a hat with a feather in it. In his old age, he has hung up his adventure outfit in the closet. Perhaps he is wearing a crown because he is at or near the throne. Maybe "NO!" is not a good expression. What would you say if you're pretty girl friend suddenly turned to stone? It might be "SARAH!!!!!" or "OH MY GOD!!!" "NOOOOO!" is pretty close to "OH MY GOD!!!" Remember, this is a royal story. We need a dignified as well as an exciting expression. 3-D is criticized. It's hard to get use to, but it can be done. King's Quest Mask of Eternity had the option of watching and playing the game in 1st person (through the eyes of Connor) or 3rd person (through the eyes of the player). Fighting with the fists is highly undesirable. It takes longer for Connor to defeat his enemy; and he is much more likely to die in the fight. It is best for Connor to go to his house first and get his dagger. There are very few clues in this game. It would have been helpful if Connor would have said out loud, "Look at all these monsters. I need to run home and get my dagger." The 16th century way of talking is interesting. I took note of some of the expressions Connor uttered like "Zounds." It's a lot better than using our modern F word. Scarfulhu praises King's Quest 6 and Alexander's ability to defeat his enemies using his wits and not a weapon. That is not realistic. We all know that princes in the old days commonly wore swords at their sides. Where was Prince Alexander's sword? Al-Hazareth even wore his sword as the bridegroom at his fake wedding ceremony. Movements may be awkward, but that's part of the game. You have to get use to moving Connor with your keyboard. There are some interesting movements like the long jump and the backwards flip. You have a point about King's Quest Mask of Eternity not being as colorful as the previous King's Quest games. Star Trek was like that. Star Trek with Kirk and Spock was very colorful. Then STTNG with Picard and Riker was not as colorful. Then Star Trek Voyager (with Capt. Janeway) and Star Trek Enterprise (with Capt. Archer) were even less colorful. You're right. Placing a key by a portrait is not a good idea. It could easily be found and taken by the janitor. Where would you hide a key? It would be on your person, or a nail on the wall, or in a drawer. As long as we've found the key, who's complaining? I'm not. Again, you complain too much. You complain about not dying in the Dimension of Death. Well, you die easy enough if you make a right turn after unlocking the gate to the compound and face five enemies when you reach the corner. And it's not too hard to die when you take on the Commander Skeleton who guards the Bridge of Life. You should have mentioned the Shadow Bane that threw Connor out of the Dimension of Death until he (Connor) acquired the magic ring. How did the young blond man and his sister get passed the Shadow Bane without the magic ring? And how did they get through the gate without the key? King's Quest 8 is not bad just because it's not King's Quest. King's Graham's children grew up and left the nest. SOMEONE had to take over. THAT'S what's bad about King's Quest 8. It has a bad ending, or, no ending at all. "The End" leaves you hanging. King Graham should have given the kingdom (of Daventry) over to Connor and Sarah (after they've gotten married) while he (King Graham) retires with his wife on the Isle of the Crown in the Land of the Green Isles. On the subject of insufficient clues again: The part where Connor must solve the blocks on the bridge to cross to the other side of the Barren Region is woefully wanting. I was unable to solve it. I had to buy the walk-through book to finish the game. Nostalgia isn't why I spent hours playing King's Quest 8. It's about a champion who is trying to save the world. What quest is greater than that?

Roberta Williams pretty much writing off Adventure Games is kinda... dickish in my mind, especially considering she pretty much MADE Adventure Games as we know it. I think Mask of Eternity is still good as it's own game, kinda like a spinoff, and I always picture in the King's Quest universe of every region and lands, it acts way differently with different themes and not trying to focus on one theme or one setting in themselves, like how Super Mario or Sonic stages does it, having a cotton-candy land to rusty-nails land, so every King Quest game themselves got different variety in their own games. I like Mask of Eternity because it tried something different, and not in a awful way... but in a "it is odd but could been worst" good way, and in a charming, grim and kinda goofy way.

I remember this game well. I was so excited as a kid getting this and it was ok till I hit the Dimension of Death which took forever, I thought the ghost characters were un-killable, and there was a game breaking glitch which needed patched. I was a poor kid with dial up internet and my parents were super restrictive so I just passed it. To this day thinking about this game brings up the Dimension of Death in my mind and the horror that awaited me after the ghost bear. The rest of the game is just a little forgettable until you get to the ice world, killed all the griffins, and got nothing to show for it, or if you played your cards right you can become invincible before the last boss. Also, only play on hard difficulty, otherwise it was too easy.

The year is 2000 and my parents have decided to buy a new house for our family. We spend the day moving into our new home and I am introduced to my new bedroom. Once left alone, 6 year old me begins to explore my new surroundings. Whilst looking through my new cupboards I see something plastic on one of the top shelf. I pull a chair towards the cupboard and stand on it to get a closer look. It is a copy of Kings Quest: The Mask of Eternity. I pull it out and run to the family computer (windows 95) and insert the disk. While it installs I flip through the brochure that came with the game. It details all the monsters and enemies I will have to face in my upcoming adventure. This is actually a true story and I think it's crazy that this is what started my love for games. It's awesome that someone out there unwittingly left a random game behind in the back of their cupboard and thag simple act changed how my life would play out. Thanks for the video. It was fun going down nostalgia alley and learning more about the background of the Kings Quest franchise.

It would make more sense if this was intended as a Quest for Glory game, but it's surprising it didn't start as one. What's also surprising is you mentioned them throwing away the fairy tale elements but not mention the lost Davidson version which does away with the violence, combat, gore and... religious themes.
@Bklyn933 жыл бұрын
There was no lost Davidson version. That came from one book not written by anyone affiliated with Sierra; the owner of the KQ Omnipedia took that and ran with it. Roberta clarified there was no Davidson version, but for a brief time when Davidson was in charge (Sept 1996-January 1997) she had project managers put above her by Davidson. But the Davidsons left CUC in January 1997, the game continued development until 1998. It started development in 1994 before Sierra was sold to CUC and combat was always part of the game from the beginning as well as the religious themes.

I'm finishing up this game soon myself. Haven't touched it in at least a decade and a half. Being the older lad that I am now, I was actually able to rid myself of the mind numbing choppiness that occurred in this game when I picked it up so many years ago. Once THAT was handled and I re-mapped some of the keys (jump is "insert"? I think not. *spacebar*), and went from arrow keys to the wsda, it became infinitely more playable. Oh, for more things that don't belong in a King Quest Game, you need only acquire Freeya's sceptre. Take it with you to the Dimension of Death and offer it to her. You will not believe your ears.

When I was about 7 years old I'd watch my Grandfather play this game as well as Nox. He had like pages of notes on the puzzles you see more of later in the game and even let me help sometimes by using his healing items when his health got low. This video really doesn't show it but there were some cool puzzles and scenarios further on in the game and as far as I remember the really generic stuff is mostly around in the first couple worlds. I know for a lot of people it's just a clunky action adventure that's too disjointed from the series it's named for, but it was still a great game I feel and was a big piece of my childhood. It's like Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs. On its own, it's a great game with much to its own merit, but it has that "Amnesia" tag and so people were upset that it was as wildly different as it was. Also that unicorn really was a unicorn. You find its horn, restore it, and then it helps you iirc.
