Have only driven over it once when I was working in the area a few years back. Was surprised to see the sign offering a substitute driver, but then I got a look at it. It's definitely a beast. It was a little spooky, but not too bad. There are some tremendous views from up there.

My wife and I cross the bridge every year when we drive to Nags Head. We travel down the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Virginia, and then we cross back over to Norfolk on the Bay bridge-tunnel!! Best part is, we cross them again on the way back!!

As a kid, we crossed this bridge all the time on trips to Jersey from D. C. Though I don’t like heights, I don’t remember ever being scared on this bridge. And, I think there was only one of them back then with one lane going each way.
@aday1637 Жыл бұрын
I grew up in Maryland and have been across both spans many many times but over the 2 lane one more times due to it being the only one for so long. My buddy worked on a cement buster hammer 2 winters to demolish the concrete road surface on the 2 lane span. They did half one winter and the other half the following winter. They could only close the span during wintertime due to lower shore traffic. They used to close the 2 lane span each spring for a bay bridge walk for an entire Sunday. You could really get up close and personal with the bridge by walking it. We used to take the kids across and crab under the Kent Narrows bridge. I remember when both spans were built, the oldest in the 1950's. Prior to that you could cross on a ferry that took you to Talchester. There may have been other ferry crossings as well. Gone to the shore on Friday night after work for the weekend used to be bumper to bumper when there was only one bridge. Sunday coming back was spread out over a few more hours and was a bit easier. The shore traffic (going to/from Ocean City) was frantic during the summer months. Lots of memories watching this video.

I literally said the same thing "I'm glad I'm not driving" when we went over the Bay Bridge a few days ago on tour. We were going the opposite direction - so we didn't see how massive it was at first.
@clewisinsurance4354 ай бұрын
Drive it weekly. Without it the trip around the top of the bay is not doable for a commuter. You get used to it. But even being over it probably 1000 times at this point. It still freaks me out sometimes. Especially in fog or heavy winds. And the North/West bound span is the worst of the 2. Because often you have oncoming traffic. It is one of the scariest bridges in America. And possibly the world.

@@WorrywartAdventuresJust a note. You said the bridge was 186 feet high, in the beginning of your vid. That's actually the clearance under the bridge to the water. The bridges, themselves, have a max height of 354 feet (eastbound), and 379 feet (westbound). I know it may be nitpicky of me to point that out, so I apologize if I came across like some snooty know-it-all! ❤❤❤

I drive on the bridge many times, even in a snow blizzard and in the middle of the night. One thing I hate is that bridge will get backed up during road construction or accident. One more thing you only pay toll going East bound before you get on the bridge. West Bound you don't pay toll.

When I was in my twenties my sister and I were heading to the beach and there was a car full of guys weaving in and out of people on the bridge. At the height of the bridge these dudes weaved in front of us and then lost control of the vehicle. They went airborn, took out a chunk of the bridge then pinballed back across again in front of us. It was raining orange sparks and somehow my sister managed to stop on a dime avoiding colliding with them. These dudes got out of the car and four of them picked up the car and moved it to one lane instead of blocking two lanes. Then they got in their buddies car who had stopped and was in front of them and drove on leaving the car on the bridge! I can't imagine the traffic they caused behind them. It is a scary bridge BUT the one that crosses from Virginia Norfolk area and is 25 miles and takes you to Delmarva penninsula is way, way, way scarier! There are areas where all you can see is ocean and it looks like you are crossing the ocean. That has to be the one they were referring to, not this Bay Bridge that is only 3 miles long. You get some wind and some chop and that bridge is downright terrifying with water coming up and splashing the road. Are we sure that's not the correct top scariest bridge in the world? It has like two or three tunnels too so it goes from bridge to tunnel to bridge to tunnel and ya can't see land at all!
@SilverAuntie19 күн бұрын
I'm with you! I DO NOT like the Bridge-Tunnel. Just the thought that, when the road takes that dive under the Bay, and you are in a tunnel deep, deep down, there may be cargo ships passing over your head! Those ships come and go from the Port of Baltimore, one of the busiest ports in the country, if not the world! So, there is quite a bit of traffic going in and out of the Bay. The only time I went through that tunnel, I thought it was amazing, until a family member planted the fear of what might happen if a cargo ship sank on top of a tunnel. I know the chances are miniscule, but I had nightmares for a week. Needless to say, I've never had a desire to travel that way since, and I have lived in Maryland 40+ years.😱
@WorrywartAdventures18 күн бұрын
@SilverAuntie Almost every time I go through one of those tunnels I see a cargo ship approaching and have the same thought. Would rather go over the rickety old bridge and take my chances rather than be under water during a tunnel collapse. I know the chances are slim but just the thought of it😳

I broke my fear of this bridge in 2016. I stayed in the middle lanes and did great. Coming back from Perrysville, MD after midnight, we got to the bridge only to find out that the Wedtbound side was closed for maintenance. For my first trip over that bridge going back home was a nightmare. Only one lane open going East and the other lane was going West. There was no turning back. Right then, I gave it to God. I learned that night that I had an easier time crossing the bridge at night verses day. I couldn’t see how high I was and even with traffic coming narrowly close going the other way, I was ok. I can now travel over that behemoth with confidence. Great video.

I would have anxiety attacks, an a heart attack too and I don't even have heart problems, asthma, diarrhea, and probably go into a seizure. 😄😄 I'm laughing about what I just said, but, I'm serious at the same time. I would've been a hot mess on that bridge. Driving that type of bridge is definitely not for the weak and scary people like me. And the bad and most scary part is if I was to experience those things while driving that bridge, there's no shoulder for me to pull over on that bridge to stop so therefore I would have to continue the drive.
