What an astounding sonata! The great unknown in the history of this music is not just the enigmatic Scarlatti, but the princess and then queen, Maria Barbara, who encouraged/ permitted him to express himself so idiosyncratically. What an extraordinary relationship they must have had, and we know so little about it. We also know very little about her, as she was so self-effacing before her mother-in-law and her husband.
