I love Rautavaara's music. It's like a Villa-Lobos in a dantesque and spiritual travel through worlds and universes where birds, angels, whales and chimaeras are roaring and filling the air!

This is one of my favorite pieces of music. I searched for it just now because I had an urge to hear it again after reading of Rautavaara's death. I know the Gothoni recording through and through, likewise the Mikkola. In 2002 I saw Laura Mikkola perform the concerto in Helsinki, in the composer's presence. But your sensitive performance revealed nuances I had never heard before, even after 20 years of listening. You plainly have a great affinity for the work. Thanks so much for posting the video.

Isn't this the most fantastic performance of this work! My regret is that I never challenged my University lecturers to perform this work - with the students and I. Oh well... it only means that the true lovers of this man's design will be realised... I wonder... Strict harmony teachers: Analyse THIS! :)

This is a remarkable work - I have long admired Rautavaara's PC1. It is ingenious. I have conflict understanding the connection/disconnection of the 1st and 2nd movement - they are quite connected... as with the 'aria' (17:00-19:00) ... it is aligned with the character of the piece, but it's not obvious in a journey-making sequence.... LOVE the melodic aspiration of the 3rd movement!! Reminiscent of Ginestera! And BRILLIANCE to the soloist! Tong Zou! Congratulation! Your performance was marvellous! You were the true solist, meeting the dynamism of the orchestra while making the piano front-and-centre! Rautavaara is watching with much pleasure. Thank you.

Really an extraordinary concerto - it's a mad mix of styles but it creates something quite unique. I know nothing else like it. Fantastic performance by Scarlett TZ.

I know this piece from a recording and it’s one of my favourite piano concertos. To see it played is very exciting. Such a physical piece, as many modern pieces are. Fantastic. Great performance, thanks for posting

My first time hearing this concerto! The piano writing reminds me a little of Messiaen, but this is a more traditional form. Agree Rautavaara is one of the greats. And a fine performance. Musician Scarlett is one to watch for!

I first heard Cantus Articus on BBC 6 Music! And fell in love with it. Bought a Download of the album and it also had this amazing piece on it. Great to see a fantastic pianist play it. It captures my emotion rollercoaster at times. Terrific. Love to see it on the proms.

The description of this video is beautiful, I heard about Rautavaara's music when Hilary Hahn her album came out and 2 serenades for orchestra and violin came out. I have never heard this piano concerto I am listening to it. And somehow the he makes the music so beautiful and chaotic together. He was definitely one of the best composers this century

It is 8/8 so 3/8+2/8+3/8 but I've often heard it as 3/9+3/9+3/9 if that makes sense i.e. the 2/8 part duration is lengthened to be the same as 3/8. You're absolutely right, she is really rhythmically accurate!
