Thanks for watching, everyone!! Sorry I took so long to make this. One quick note, the footage at 3:48:45 is actually the Joypolis Sega Touring Car cab, though it is basically using the same tech as the life sized Sega Rally machine. The following image and video clip do in fact show the life sized Sega Rally machine. That dang Supra threw me off!! Also, there is a typo in the Ove Andersson text, misspelling his last name by only using one S. In the US, that surname is usually spelled with just one S, so my brain did not catch that when going over the video for fixes.

"what don't we know about Sega in the 90s? What don't we appreciate?" "Freedom, creative freedom" i feel like this statement is emblematic of why modern Sega just doesn't hit the same as they did back in the day. Sega was doing all kinds of crazy shit and now they kind of just play it safe with a Sonic and a Yakuza every once in a while. Kind of a shame but i guess that's what you gotta do when you can't just make whatever harebrained idea into a game on your own console

Just getting to hear all these stories from the original people makes me see how intimate they were with their games, sort of like their own child. It's has me feeling appreciative of their work and how so much of what we experience in modern gaming today can go back to these people from the 80-90s. I grew up in the 2000s. I'm a 25yr old girl, the 90s was before my time but that era has always fascinated me and I love hearing the stories of the people who worked during that era, it's like wild west, anything goes! I first found this channel through the Virtua Cop video and binge watched everything else prior. 57:30 Hey, you mentioned northern Minnesota! Wow! I had not expected that. I'm from Duluth myself. Indeed, I always thought that the roads and hills in Duluth would make for a great racing videogame, with great views of Lake Superior, steep declines, and those narrow roads around the hills with only large rocks to keep you from tumbling over. This is a fantastic documentary and I'm greatly enjoying the entire journey through this "Saturn 1995" saga. I have no illusions that the series will continue after Virtua Fighter 2. Indeed, this series has the feel of building to a climax, with Virtua Cop, Sega Rally and VF2 at the crescendo. If you were to decide to call it a day, or at least take a significant sabbatical, this would be the perfect place to do so. "Sega Saturn 1995" is a perfect story arc and that should be strongly considered. What I am really anticipating are the documentary movies that will follow, the ones that will end up playing Sundance and Cannes and getting Oscar nominations. All of these Sega videos are preparation for scaling those mountains. I look at my own artistic career, which began with humble zines, then progressed to artwork, then websites, then blogs, freelance work on DVDs, collaborations on published books, then publishing my own books, then arriving at art/photography ebooks and whatever the heck it is I'm doing now. Anyway, just a couple thoughts to pass along while watching the first act of Sega Rally. I really want to sit down and play a couple quick games with the Saturn racing wheel and reminisce on how this videogame actually improved my real-life driving skills during a very snowy 1995 winter in Minneapolis. This might be the greatest racing game ever made, certainly among the handful of all-time greats. Kudos, as always, for all your very hard work and dedication. You're doing a great job. Update: Completely unrelated question. At 1:54:30, we see footage from the bonus arctic stage from Steep Slope Sliders. Has anybody successfully completed this stage, making it all the way to the helicopter at the end? If so, does anything interesting happen as a result? I've yet to pull off this feat and I've always been curious.

I can say without a doubt this is one of the best videos made about a video game. Its so uncanny, I felt like somebody reached into my brain and made a video just for me. I grew up a Sega kid, I still love Sega to this very day. Sega Rally is one of my favorite games on the Saturn and I would say probably one of my favorite games of all time and it influenced me in terms of coming to enjoy Rally in my own way and how I view racing games. I always like videos, documentaries, or looks into how a video game was made and the people that worked on them and you hit on that as well...the coolest thing you did I think, besides getting all of this Japanese footage and translations of interviews was being able to speak to Yoshio Fujimoto. Admittedly I hadn't actually heard of him until now, the story you managed to tell with his experience getting into Rallying, creating his company Tein and eventually conquering Kenya was very cool and you can tell he's a genuine down to earth guy which makes me like him even more. The whole arc you showed with him starting out, and then him restoring his car and driving, describing the experience and even returning to Kenya was actually moving on an emotional level. Beyond that, I think you successfully captured that intangible thing about Sega Rally that is hard to describe to people. Sega Rally isn't just a game, it is an experience. You rule, thank you for this video.

This game was one of my favorite Saturn games for showing off the Saturn's graphical prowess along with virtua fighter 2. I still prefer Gran Tourismo 2 and Tekken 2/3 on the ps1 as actual games but the Sega Saturn has always had a special place in my heart. I actually always wanted one and the day I had enough money to buy a used one (a mere $30 from EB) In 1998/1999 I discovered that Electronics Boutique quit selling them... I was heart broken. Then we stopped at a yard sale on the way home and found one with some games for $30 (vf1, Daytona, etc). I loved it and bought a few more games from eBay. I think VF2 was under $5 shipped... It was a good time.

This was a fantastic video on Sega Rally. I loved everything about this video. I was engaged from beginning to the end. This was one of my first Sega Saturn pick ups back in 2014 during my very first semester of post secondary for $20 CAD as a recommendation from the game store clerk that day when I said I was looking for a game with a budget. I thought it looked really cool and slick with it's silver case and got that with 2 other Saturn games Die Hard Arcade and Gex bringing my Sega Saturn game collection to 4 games. So I had Night Warriors Darkstalkers Revenge, Gex, Sega Rally Championship and Die Hard Arcade. All night long I spent the evening switching between all 4 games. I remember telling all my friends about it that Monday in university and they thought I was a crazy 19 year old to be playing games on a console that released in 1995 while the PS4 was still in its infancy. To this day Sega Rally is still one of my favorites on the system. This documentary was an awesome love Letter to one of the best games of all time. While yes the Sega Saturn may have been a commercial failure this amazing wonderful console still captures my imagination and will always be in my heart. I have done several streams of me doing Sega Saturn games and if I ever get a request for Sega Rally I always get excited because I know its not just the best racing game on the system but one of the best of its generation. If anyone here is a saturn owner and still hasn't got this game in their collection they need to fix that ASAP.
@byronlaw64913 ай бұрын
I’m halfway in and it’s just fantastic. At 2hrs 7 mins mark you see an example of the Saturn’s composite dithering in action. Now there is rainbow effect in the car windows. This happened on my model 2 (I used scart rgb back in the day but switched to composite for these effects recently) but strangely when that unit broke (I sold it as not working) and I purchased a model 1 I’ve noticed the rainbow effect had gone. Kinda like how playing mega drive games though a 32x eliminates the effect there. Now clearly this footage in the video must have been running on a model 1. How wildly different then are the composite outputs on saturns. Very nerdy topic but that’s me.
