Scarry Channel with Simrad ForwardScan

Simrad ruined all our fun. Going through this narrow, poorly charted pass should have been exciting - terrifying even. But it wasn't. It was easy. I'm loving our new chartplotters and the ForwardScan sonar.
Equipment: Simrad NSS9 EVO3 chartplotter, Simrad ForwardScan Sonar, GoFree Link app on Android tablet (to record chartplotter screen)

Does the forward scan transducer also provide depth under the boat? Or do you need a separate transducer to provide depth under the boat?

It calculates the depth under there boat but it doesn't seem to be as accurate as a regular depth transducer. We have both.

@@twoatsea Thank you. I'm only familiar with depth finder units that only allow for one transducer. How are multiple transducers wired into your system?

@@jasonmcintosh2632 I have a DST 800 (depth, speed, temperature) connected to the NMEA2000 buss and the forward scan connected to the chartplotter donate input. I also have a fancier depth speed connected to the other sonar port but I don't use it much. Transducers connected to the sonar ports can only be used one at a time. I have to pause the forward scan to use the extra depth speed. I hope this helps.

@@twoatsea One more question: Can the DTS 800 be removed from the thruhull while the boat is in the water? I'm wondering if it can easily be upgraded or replaced w/o having to take a thruhull out.

Plot a safe route. On your unit or a chart. More bells and whistles. Really necessary?

Where do you mount the transducer on a monohull? In front of the keel or to the side?

We mounted it right on the center line, in front of the keel. It was the same place we had our old DST800 transducer. We moved the DST800 off to the side just a bit. It has to be far enough back from the waterline that it doesn't get too much turbulence.

Do u know if its sensitive enough to pick up bomies (coral heads)?

It is sensitive enough to pick up bomies, but I wouldn't want to be motoring along at 5 knots when a coral head is likely to be shallow enough to hit. I've used it to spot coral heads in anchorages. Here's a video we made of that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/anytiZdoapuVaNU
