Hippos are excellent swimmers and spend a lot of time submerged in water, but they can also walk along the river bottom if it's shallow enough for them to touch the ground. They usually prefer to swim, though.

To go with Harry's intro: when I was 8, my dog got out of the yard and I chased him by myself around the town until I watched him dart across a freeway and get smoked in the butt by a van. He survived but I didn't know it until someone found him, cuz I sure as hell wasn't running across the freeway at that point. Ran home crying. Scary day for 8yr old me.

My craziest animal experience was at a zoo. I was going through a lima enclosure and an ostrich that had escaped it's enclosure managed to get into the lima enclosure and was running around with a bunch of zookeepers trying to catch it.
