"What if I keep going low? What if I don't have ANY snacks?!?!" I laughed so hard because that little panic description has me written all over it.

I have T1D and anxiety too, and that makes me terrified of lows! I had a few really bad experiences so I litterally go crazy and paranoid everytime I see it goes under 80, I start crying and shaking and I also get really sad and depressed. I haven't had a proper low in soo long, because I always try my best to avoid them, yet I'm still super scared, every day of my life. I can't even eat straight if I'm on my own, 'cause I'm too afraid of what might could happen, this disease is turning my life into a nightmare, I don't know how I'll go through this 😩

My goodness! Same! I wonder how people don't start crying and shaking when they reach the 40s, because I already freak out if I test and I'm under 75.

I got diagnosed in May of 1995. Which was a month after I turned 6. I am now 29 and for the first 20 years of my life I had amazing control. Unfortunately when I was 26, I started a new job. I teach special education and I started having a lot of issues with my blood sugars going low. 99% of the time my blood sugars were 55 or below. And now that I’m older I can’t feel when my blood sugar is low anymore. When I was younger I could always tell when my sugar was low and high but unfortunately I am unable to do that now. At this point too I didn’t have health insurance because I wasn’t able to be on my moms health insurance and I made to much to qualify for Medicaid. It was a very stressful time and because of that my endocrinologist who I had since becoming diabetic was forced to drop me as a patient because it was to expensive for myself or my mom to pay out of pocket for my appointments and then have to pay out of pocket for my insulin and other supplies. Luckily I got my teaching job which came with amazing health insurance. So my primary care doctor was desperately trying to get me into another endocrinologist. But during this time like I said I was constantly having severe lows, to the point where I was passing out multiple times a day. I was also blacking out night as well. I thank god every day for my boyfriend because this was also a scary time for him because at this point we had been together for about 4 years and he had never really saw me like this before. But he saved my life multiple times and he could have left me and not have wanted to deal with it but he stayed right by side. I remember or well I remember him telling me that one night I started tossing and turning and flipping in bed and then I threw myself onto the floor and he woke up and he said where I had been lying on the bed was drenched with sweet as was I. He immediately went and got some juice and he said I was laying on the floor babbling and hysterically crying. He then poured some juice down my throat and I finally came too. This same thing happened about 15 more times. And that was when I knew that he really loved me because if he didn’t he never would have stayed with me through all that. So the finally breaking point was I was at work one day and thankfully I was in the teachers room and not in front of my students and I was eating lunch. Thankfully one of my co workers is also a T1D and she said all of sudden I stopped talking got really pale and sweaty and started staring off into to space and her be T1 as well knew what was going. So they called the ambulance and I got taken to the ER. The ER doctor was amazing and I told her my situation and how I was trying to get into a new endocrinologist and she told me there was a new one in my area and she called their office and for me an appointment the next day. This was almost 4 years ago now and still see this endocrinologist who is amazing and I love him so much. He listened to what I had to say and took it into consideration. He told me I needed to be on a pump. So I went on the Medtronic pump and my sugars were amazing. Unfortunately after being on it for 3 years I could no longer put the site in my leg because it would always say the insulin flow was blocked. So I was only able to put it in my stomach. So 2 weeks ago at my last appointment I went back on shots and told my doctor I wanted to be on the omnipod because I also didn’t like the tubing at all. And a couple people I work with one being the same person who knew my sugar was low work is on the omnipod. So I got the omnipod a couple days ago and my training is Thursday 17th. I went back on shots for the time being and once again my blood sugars are constantly low. And people who aren’t diabetic I always explain to them kind of like you were saying. You feel weak, you have no energy, and I always feel like i am made of rubber. I can’t wait for Thursday to come and to get hooked up on the omnipod. Because low blood sugars suck so bad. I love your videos. I watch them all the time and it makes me feel good that there is a diabetic community out there. I know I don’t know you personally but still thank you. Because when I’m having a bad diabetes day it’s hard to talk to people who aren’t diabetic because they really don’t understand. So again thank you for your videos and advice!

omg, this is so me! attacking my "low cabinet" full of goodies when I'm low is kinda my favorite though :D btw, does it happen to anybody else that you kinda feel like you might be low, but then you check and you're just fine, but you already started to think about what snack you could eat but then you can't cause you're not low? I hate it :D Daica, love your videos! keep up the great work :)

Hey Danica, good vid. I'm type 1 for about 2 years now and I actually had my scariest moment just last week which also could be a topic to talk about. So basically, went out with friends to a bday party and had eaten quite a bit of sushi, so I was thinking I would probably be fine because of all the rice. I was also drinking cider, which although high in sugar i've never really had much of a problem with. The night goes on, i end up dancing quite a lot, pulling some crazy shapes. All in all, great night. Get home late, fell asleep, but then woke up around 4:30am, seriously dripping sweaty and shaky low, at 1.9. So I think what made it way more scary was the fact, i was really pretty intoxicated (clearly completely my own fault and usually pretty good). Had no idea what i was doing. I didn't know which jacket pocket my monitor was in and very recently moved into my own flat alone as well. Hardly any food in the cupboards. Some glucose tablets in one of the many pockets in my rucksack. Don't know the neighbours and didn't even have good phone signal. Stumbling around the kitchen ended up finding some jam and some dry tortilla wraps, which was definitely an interesting combination lol. I bounced a bit and then collapsed on the sofa. Probably just going to be more careful going out again in future but I think because of a combination of all these factors, plus also living alone for the first time since diagnosed, all added up to a pretty scary time. Just thought I would share really :) and say, don't get too drunk especially if you live on your own. Keep up the good vlogging :) Steve

@@meliciodeltorro6264 Ah Melicio, well i'm really glad to hear sharing my story from years ago had really helped you out!! You're welcome! :D Yeah it takes moments like these to really hit home how you have to be careful. These days I just don't really drink a great deal and feel healthier for that in general but i'm also really lucky now to have a freestyle libre and a miao miao cgm and it's amazing that my smart watch just alerts me. Everyday i'm amazed by it. But yeah it can happen when you over do drinking, which we can all do sometimes and wish you all the best and take care :)

When I have a low, I usually eat around 20 carbs and then trying to calm down because I have bad anxiety. The worst part is, 20 carbs hardly does anything and I just go right back down... so that's wonderful.

Family and friends I am often with know the signs of low blood sugar, what kind of snacks are good to bring it up, and where to find and how to use my glucagon kit. I've gotten down into the low 40s a few times, but I've never gotten so low that I haven't been able to take care of myself. I still feel better knowing that the people I am around most know how to help if I ever need it.

Since my diagnoses when I was 43 and around now, I've hit my record low of 29 and both times I didn't really feel low at first but something was telling me to check my blood sugar and I'm glad for that little feeling that I had. So, both times I tried that eat 15 carbs wait 15 minute thing which after the first 15 minutes I was still around 29 so yeah, both times I started telling my self just to start eating everything and both times finally after about an hour I'd get back to normal then tried to calculate all the carbs I ate. The first time I hit 29 I actually didn't spike like crazy because I was a pedicabber back then, if ya don't know what that is it's a huge tricycle and people pay you to give them a ride so I was getting a lot of exercise that day. The second time was while I was at work at the bike store I work at so after 2 hours my blood sugar spiked at 240 and it was hard to come back down.

Thank you for your video! I have been trying to find video testimonies about personal experiences with lows to help my friends understand what it’s like, especially because I am not very symptomatic unless my blood sugars get below 40 mg/dL and have almost always corrected on my own. When I’m low, I often tell my friends to keep an eye on me, but not to ask me a bunch of questions or expect any feedback from me, because I have a slightly shorter fuse when I’m low. I have to tell them because I’m typically very nice (so the irritability/poor patience is unexpected) and because a lot of people can’t tell when I’m low unless I’m doing mentally strenuous work.

My lowest was 29. I had gestational diabetes at the age of 19, had another child soon after that and was fine during my pregnancy but kept getting lows (my diabetic cousin would test my sugars). Now many moons later and diabetic, my dr’s don’t know if I’m type 1 or 2. It’s so frustrating. Back then I would eat a protein, weird but it worked to get my sugars back up. Now I raid the house, I know where all the snack stashes are lolll.

Once my friend said that we should go to the end of a short road to check something, so I didn't bring food...we ended up going way further. 😱 I ended up going really low when we were walking back! I had to tell my friends I had to stop because I couldn't get back, I was freaking out but just had to lye still while my friend got me food. I thought I was gonna pass out and nobody was gonna know what to do, so I set my phone's homescreen to my medical details and important contacts. I ended up getting better, but it was pretty scary!

over correcting hypoglycemia can get one stuck in cycle of lots of highs and lows which further increases hypoglycemia unawareness which ONLY is corrected by keeping blood glucose in 75-95 or so "normal range" of blood glucose. It is good to stay in this range all the time - as much of the time as possible - which also restores hypoglycemia awareness and glucose in liver is restored ---- after 51 years of t1 diabetes the use of a cgm and 6/12/12 diet --- lots of protein and kale :-) Thanks for the video - hypoglycemia is scary and potentially fatal. Glucose paste/syrup or tabs are the best treatment for a lot of reasons. Smarties are glucose and cheap and easily available and one tube is 1 gram -

Question?... newbie needs your expertise.....:( My 15 yr old son was diagnosed type 1, last week @ ER with 615, (my paramedic brother has never seen over 600). Er dr gave insulin got him to 340 & released us! I immediately went & bought a glucose monitor. Within 10 hours it was 599 and to high to even register, just said “hi”! I got him back to Er, they admitted he never should’ve been released! Apologized Bc he was now loaded with ketones (in just that short of time), nearly in DKA! They transferred us to children’s hospital, where we spent several days being educated, & stabilizing him. Now we are suddenly having a bunch of lows. 42-46. His insulin level was a 15 (total carbohydrates divided by 15 to find out the # of units to inject). Then it was lowered to 8. (From 15 to 8). Since he’s suddenly having so many lows, I’m thinking his insulin level needs to be adjusted again? I’m calling Dr in morning! He’s so strong and so smart, but he broke down tonight. Tired of feeling bad and tired of sticking himself. :( For several years he played soccer and was always scoring the most points on his team. Then 4th-7th grade he was an amazingly talented quarterback... athletic ability combined with being highly intelligent and able to make magic and any field! But hasn’t played again After 7th grade football season..., he spent 10 days in cooks children’s hospital.. went in thinking appendicitis came out with a diagnosis of severe Crohn’s disease. :(. He had lesions in the “skip pattern”, lesions throughout his stomach, his esophagus, & in terminal ilium (not sure how to spell last one). Now type 1 diabetes too! What am in doing wrong? So scary... He’d had some odd symptoms, brain fog, tiredness, moody, etc. I contributed that to his being FIFTEEN! It wasn’t till I saw excessive night thirst, balance problems, & an ingrown toenail got infected (extremities slow to heal). I realized something was bad wrong with blood sugar and latest symptoms were classic diabetes signs. Took him to er about toe and symptoms, told triage nurse I was worried about blood sugar... BUT I DIDNT TRULY THINK... it’d actually be diabetes, & type one diabetes, his endocrinologist said it laid dormant all this time... then pow! (Say he likely only suffered the last month). A1C was reasonable considering levels in 600s, & that he should’ve prob been in a coma. Not walking and talking. Hell an hour before I took him to ER, (he called me for help)... Bc he’d gone to school nurse telling her something wasn’t right. She took vitals.. all good... sent him back to class! She said he seemed like a “typical teen looking to get out of class”. Complaints; he told her, “ I uh uh feel bad, my vision is um um blurry, I fell down somehow when I um stood up”. She said he told her all this, TOO calmly, unbothered, staring off, no conviction to any one symptom. She apologized saying it’s exactly What she sees in kids hoping to go home for day, or just nap in her office.... in retrospect, I feel his nonchalant, weird demeanor, was Bc his blood sugar was so extremely high that he was damn near in a coma, & couldn’t express to anyone how bad he felt. :(. Poor kid!! As if being a teenager itself isn’t hard enough?? (You understand being diagnosed also @ 15)! PLEASE..Any advice or direction, that you or others can give, Id greatly appreciate! We are not handling all this well. It’s terribly confusing learning all that a diabetic deals with!! I HAD NO IDEA HOW MUCH YALL DELT WITH!! MUCH RESPECT!! 👊❤️ I wish I could take this hit for my son... so hard as his momma, can’t fathom how he truly feels. 😭

Usually when I go low at night, it wakes me up. But if someone is scared they can always set an alarm in the middle of the night just to check

two days ago I had an ed visit for the low. my roommate called form ems because I was stumbling around, and almost fell out the second story window. I fell forward fell on my face, hit my head on the baseboard and punched a hole in the wall. ems tested me at 31 and 22. I'm now carrying glucagon kit. now carrying up to date medical record with medication list. I've always carried the medical tag on my neck.

I hate lows more than anything. Once I hit 45 I feel like I will die. I slam honey, juice, gummies, glucose gel....whatever I can find quickly. I have zero appetite when I'm low, probably due to the anxiety. Once I start to curve back up around 50, then the shark comes out, lol. I try to eat low carb toast with butter. 4 slices equally 24 cho, and I'm good.

This is a pretty weird question, but does anyone get an upset stomach and diarrhea after you've been low? I almost always get an upset stomach after going under 3.5 mmol/l (63 mg/dl) - it not even that low, and it happens almost every time anyway. :/

Does everyone have a different "normal" zone, or is there an ideal number for everyone, types 1 and 2??
@cleggyplays7074
@cleggyplays7074 8 жыл бұрын
+Perktube1 we are taught in the UK now it should be 4-7 which is about 72-124 in the US but it used to be 4-ten but they changed it, that is the ideal
@KM683250

+Perktube1 Some people have a slightly higher target zone than others. For example, elderly patients might be told to aim higher because they are in more danger of trouble from a low and because they probably won't live long enough to develop complications from high blood sugar. Your personal target zone would be a decision made between you and your doctor. However, I suspect nearly all recommendations would involve a target range under 180 mm/dL (10.0 mmol/L). I don't think there would be a difference between type1 and type 2, given all other variables are the same.

Hypoglycaemia can be seen in non-diabetics. Diabetes is not the only condition that affects blood sugar levels. Hypoglycaemia is often a symptom rather than a condition itself, so if ever it is seen, the person should have blood and urine tests to rule out any possible causes. Hypoglycaemia can also be a side effect of certain medications, such as opioid painkillers, antidepressants, anticonvulsants, and antibiotics, and it can be a symptom of many different medical conditions, such as hypopituitarism, hypoadrenalism, hypothyroidism, hyperinsulinaemia, and conditions affecting the brain and nervous system. This is why it is important to have blood and urine tests and other thorough tests if a person suffers from hypoglycaemic episodes and they don't have diabetes. I was having non-diabetic hypoglycaemia and hit 1.3mmol/L several times, eventually tests revealed the cause was hypopituitarism and hypoadrenalism, aswell as fibromyalgia being another cause for me. Since treatment, attacks have been greatly reduced. Please seek medical advice if you, or someone you know, is experiencing hypoglycaemia and are not diabetic.
