I think it was also a reference to what Dewey tells Gale in _Scream 2_ about how, for all she knows, his dimwittedness could acrually all be an elaborate act to get people to drop their guard around him, allowing him to effectively maneuver within any situation - which is *exactly* what Doofy does here in _Scary Movie._ 🙂

To be fair, Friedberg and Seltzer were only credited as co-writers because it turned out that they were writing a similar screenplay that was close to what the Wayans had. Marlon insists that they had nothing to do with the script and that the Writer's Guild ordered that they be included because of the similarities.

One time I watched this movie with my sister, and we couldn’t stop laughing at a scene where the killer had to run down the stairs in his goofy costume as a piano was falling after him. The impracticality of a killer having to move in an outfit that can so easily trip someone up STILL brings a chuckle to the surface!

This one made me laugh a lot in my teens and even now. As much as I pride myself liking high-brow and sophisticated movies, then as now, even I have to allow myself the occasional lowbrow comedy movies every now and then and this and Scary Movie 2 fall into that category in the best sense possible. I once worked with an asshole who looked a lot like Bobby and when he pissed me and a lot of my co-workers off, I got even by pointing that out to my co-workers, who thankfully saw the movie and busted up laughing. They couldn't unsee it after that.

Scary Movie 1 is elevated above all other Movie Movies because it still has a working plot and a working twist; it's not just a random sequence of parody scenes thrown at you. And second, while much of the humour is dumb, I think the movie is often smart in its use of the dumb. There is a smarter level to it. Others are just dumb dumb.

Correction: Scary Movie was not the first to do a Matrix parody. Deuce Bigelow, Male Gigolo (which ironically is a Disney Movie) is the first to do a Matrix parody. In my Opinion, Scary Movie 3 was the best of the best, because not only did it bring down to a PG13, making it more silly and less gross, but with David Zucker on the helm, it did a great job of making fun of the plot holes of the current scary films, and feels more like a clever satire rather than gross out film.

I remember seeing this movie when I was just starting college and it still has a special place in my heart for laughs. I agree that the humor can be sort of stupid sometimes but it’s the kind of stupid humor that still feels sort of comfortable in some ways. I love this movie. I like all of first four movies in the series but 5 & 6 were pretty bad. The franchise got lost along the way often because of new writers who weren’t as good as the Wayans’ brothers. However the original “Scary Movies” are still a lot of fun to revisit and I strongly agree with you about Not Another Teen Movie being a hidden gem! I hope there’s a review about it coming out in the future as well. Thank you for looking back on this movie and the beginning of the franchise for all the fans out there including myself! I love this movie. It's so funny. I know you said you weren't a fan of Doofy, but the ending made it worth it. I thought the actors did a perfect balance of playing it straight while also being in a comedy. In a paradoxical way, playing it straight just made it so much funnier. "Oh my god! We hit a boot!"

I can't believe you didn't mention the changing expressions on the Ghost Face mask. In a more serious movie the mask being able to emote like that wouldn't work but because this is a parody and it's not animated, the mask just has a different expression every time it's on screen, it works. It's like a joke out of Mad Magazine being represented in live action and it works so well. There's a parody of a Spider-man comic in Mad Magazine where the spider logo on the costume changes in every panel of the comic. This actually happens in the comics where some times the logo will change between panels especially when the Spider-man costume actually has TWO logos on it. There's a smaller black spider logo on the chest and a larger red spider logo across his back. Some times the logo that's suppose to be on his back will be missing leaving just a blank blue space space there and that logo will appear in black across his chest. This is a known error that typically happens when different artists are working on the comic leading to inconsistencies between panels but Mad took those rare errors and made an entire joke out of it where in the parody their Spider-man knock off would literally have a different logo in every single panel of the comic. This has also been done on KZbin by Transformers fans. It's a known animation error in the G1 cartoon where some characters will appear with the wrong faction symbol on their chest. In fact Transformers Animated from 2007 even recreated one of the animation errors where Bumblebee appeared briefly with a Decepticon insignia. But there's also a Transformers Abridged series on KZbin where a fan took G1 animation and dubbed over the voices for parody. And as a visual sight gag just to make fun of the animation errors in the original cartoon Soundwave literally appears with a different symbol replacing the Decepticon insignia on his chest ever time he appears on screen. That's what I feel like Scary Movie is doing with the Ghost Face mask. The Jack in the Box mascot does this too where every time the camera cuts away from him he's actually wearing a different mask with a different expression on it which very subtly gives the illusion that the character can actually emote without actually animating the mask doing any sort of emoting. One of my favorite expressions in this movie and actually the first time I really even noticed the mask changing was when they were all smoking and getting high, they made a high Ghostface mask and the fact that the killer is just sitting there chilling with everyone with that expression on the mask is hilarious. And I don't think that joke would have worked as well as it does if they just used the default Ghost Face mask instead of a custom mask with that stone faced expression on it.

It had a unique edit where they added jokes deleted from the theatrical cut that weirdly fills in the continuity cracks (why Drew teleports from the back of her house to the front when running from Ghostface, why Cindy answers the phone in the kitchen when it was by her front door, etc)

This movie was so unnecessary. Scream did the same thing, only better and with actual scary moments, a few years before this. But because of the sheer volume of the Wayans (Shawn and Marlon, not the talented members of the family) comedies, those are the ones people remember. It's like kids who think the live action Disney movies and the Jim Carrey version of Scrooge are the quintessential versions.

This movie along with the third are some of the best and most hilarious parody movies of the 2000s. Just a classic hilarious moment after another. Part 4 & 5 were already too forced and unfunny, part 2 has his moments but was trying to hard to be Scary movie 1 and was too forced sometimes, so 1 & 3 are really funny and always rewatchable

It' a CULT CLASSIC ! Not the best movie ever, obviously, but it's so far above all the other "Movie" movies. The ending makes it the best of the series. Back in the days when we were ALLOWED TO LAUGH !

I think it's important to appreciate this film with the mindset of its target audience. Sure, in my late 30s, I don't find many of the jokes funny any more, but, 20+ years ago, I laughed to tears at all of them.
