Digging the Old West With BottleNed

Digging the Old West With BottleNed

Күн бұрын

What do all the young ppl call Halloween month these days? Spooky season? Well BottleNed would have to agree with that shit.
Seems like every time the All Hallows rolls around, BottleNed digs up something creepy AF....and this season is no exception ! So get that pumpkin carved, or throw it off the dam, and then sit back and enjoy ANOTHER BOTTLENED HALLOWEEN SPECIAL EPISODE !!!
UPDATE !
23:13 Big thanks goes to Benita Grattan for pointing out that the "bone" lady's hair comb could in fact be made of a Tortoise shell ! Expensive combs back then were also sometimes made from precious metal & even ivory !

The cold cream lid was on the other end of the same street as the Llewellyn druggist. Llewellyn was at 1518 Chestnut St. Philly. so I'm guessing that was the market street back then. Very cool find Ned.

Just found your channel, as i was looking for clues about where we should start to look for old discarded items in the yard of my daughter and son in laws 1860 Wisconsin farm house. lots of old buildings are now gone, just the foundation of a barn and of course the original house. the lot is flat but then drops off a hillside into the rest of the 5 acres of woods so we were thinking maybe start just over the end of that hillside. Looking forward to finding some cool stuff too! Love the finds, how fun!

One observation guys - wouldn't it make sense that all the pieces of a broken bottle should be in the hole you are digging. I mean they didn't throw one piece today and another piece a decade later in another hole. So that should tell you you've missed a section of the dig. You are likely leaving the best behind. Also, ask yourself if you got as many bottles as you would expect - especially from an ambassadors' house with all that entertaining going on? I think you are cutting off the dig too soon. It is highly likely that there could be two holes next to each other - a two seater.

Bottle Ned The Duke Of Digga's! Exceptionally entertaining and informative video and a very good representation of early western glass.Cathedral pickle jars and extractions always get me worked up.Being somewhat of a Clairvoyant I see an ultra rare and elusive western blown Baker & Cutting Glass & Pickle MFRS S.F. in your future keep the faith.
@BottleNed
@BottleNed Жыл бұрын
I dug at the site of the Baker & Cutting Glass Works - they were excavating out / breaking all this cull glass with thousands of those things broken ! It was heartbreaking! I got in there for one night & saved as many of the pieces as I could as well as some bits of the crucible. If I were makin these vids at the time I could’ve documented the whole thing but this was years ago. So much history & information lost :(

@@BottleNed Agreed that would have been a very valuable and important piece of Historical documentation.That being said you were very fortunate to have been there and lived that experience and even though it was understandably heartbreaking it will surely be a moment in time that you will never forget.

Interesting piece of wine bot. The wine is produced in a medieval hill top village in France. The vines produce grapes for the dark Cahors wines or a very special dessert grape called Chasselas. Best part being serenaded by the ghost of Ned's ancestor.

I love that small master ink! I thought it looked very Stoddard like when you wiped it off! That pickle is still so nice even with the cracks in it! We found an 1858 fruit jar down in a 35 ft outhouse. When we cleaned it off we noticed that there was what looked like white ribbon inside. When we opened it the smell was awful! Turned out the ribbon was tape worms and there was a pair of dentures in it as well! I guess if you did lose your dentures down an outhouse would you ever want to put them back in your mouth?

Great vid as always Ned! With this pit, I assume you used the drill and probe method? Drilling multiple holes through the concrete several feet apart from each other and probing each one until you found the pit? When you use that method, have you ever opened it up to find that it is not a privy, but instead a trash/ash pit? Because of the trajectory of the drilled holes, you wouldn't really be able to probe for walls.. Just curious! Here in Binghamton NY we have run into ash pits a few times when we initially thought we had a privy. Usually they are very sparse with little to no trash. We haven't yet done any drilling, but we do have some permissions with blacktop/concrete in our way, so we will likely be doing it in the near future if not after winter.
@BottleNed
@BottleNed Жыл бұрын
Yes ! Drilling is often necessary out west because there are far fewer places to dig, which are mostly capped under concrete ! And because we do most of our digging in urban environments where soil is in the process of getting disturbed and we need to do the digs before they drive piles, excavate old footings, etc and destroy all the buried old trash !

Another good one Ned! Go figure that I would love that gothic pickle bottle, it is gorgeous . I actually like sauce bottles too that have the cathedral windows and arches. I have four different varieties. I definitely see the difference between west versus east in the quality of glass. The colors of bottles are stunning so smooth and clear. Even though the pickle jar was one of the oldest botts it was better in clarity and color. I have to get my hands on one or two. Any recommendations? Loves the chattering teeth. We're the teeth for one individual or two? How long does it usually take you to complete a privy? Can't wait to see what you have in store for us. Take care!!! Please keep the bott videos coming they're addicting. Do you have a PayPal account?
@BottleNed

I believe the teeth belonged to one guy! I'm in the process of making a Patreon acct so ppl can donate whatever they can to video documentation of the ongoing quest for The Bott ! I haven't really put much attn into marketing or money in the past because i just love digging and making vids but now im confronting the stark post-pandemic realty that I'm gonna need to either get a job and not make as many vids OR make THIS into a job, which i'd rather do !!! So i'll let you know about that and I REALLY appreciate your support !
