Another terrific video! I didn't know about sandpaper types. Also, your recommendation to use pressure sensitive sandpaper--absolutely. Been doing it for more than 12 years. I've tried spray adhesives, always there are bumps! It's easy to clean off any old sticky from glass with a razor blade. Even an old utility knife blade works good enough. I may be a complete hack, but I don't use a guide. My chisels are all curved. I'm putting on both the big angle and the smaller cutting angle at the same time. It's not as pretty, and I may be missing something, but seems to work pretty good. It's scary sharp because you'll know you're doing it right if the edges of your plane and chisels are like razor blades. You can't scary sharp a chisel and then put it in your leather tool pouch--it'll cut it way through. You'll know you're doing it right if when you get a new chisel you take it out of the box and sharpen it.

That stuff tends to be really thin, like picture glass. A better source would be old oven doors, or windows off a vehicle. Granite floor tiles are a great idea though. I've already contemplated gluing one to a concrete paving slab to get a surface plate on the cheap.

I have been using this for years and years. I found the easy way to remove sandpaper, and remove glue is to use a hair dryer or heat gun to heat the sandpaper, then lift it off. Next use Napa solvent to remove the spray adhesive. I went to a recycle company and got the glass from scanners for computers. They just throw the glass away, so were very happy to give it to me.

With sandpaper I always feel like the course grits must drag against the edge of the tool when you push forward. I'm not sure they do, or that it makes a difference, but that's why I go back with course grits. The jig is a common one made by several companies. Here they are on amazon: amzn.to/2lfDR32

Stumpy, If using spray adhesive, when the sandpaper is used up and no longer good, how does one remove it from (and clean old glue) from the glass in order to apply new sandpaper? Also, what do you put on the sandpaper to lubricate it? Thanks for the feedback and awesome videos.
@StumpyNubs

A heat gun is a good tool to release the glue. Some sort of solvent, such as mineral spirits will remove old adhesive buildup. Water will lubricate the sandpaper.

2 Norton stones and a strop with compound you can use the four surfaces that you get from the two sharpening stones to rub them against eachother and get them super flat by alternating which ones are on top of eachother and making sure all surfaces touch eachother. Sharpen and flatten on the stones and then debur on the strop with green compound.
@StumpyNubs
@StumpyNubs 4 жыл бұрын
Rubbing two Norton stones together is a terrible idea. What do you think happens to the grit that rubs off? You can't wipe it all away. You are contaminating the finer stone with coarse grit.

The best sandpaper by far for wood is “Tri-M-Ite” made by 3M. It lasts ages and does not clog much and stays sharp. I think it is silicon carbide. It is different from wet and dry paper. There is no turning back once you have used it with a cork sanding block. It’s not expensive either, much cheaper than what you buy in diy stores. For sharpening blades I would use use a stone or diamonds and not paper.
@pianoluthier

I have had good luck not using the little feet and folding the top end of the paper over the edge of the plate. The plate is hard up against the bench top, pinching the paper between it and the benchtop. Water adhesion does the rest of the work. No glue mess or hastle pealing off adhesive papers, no extra cost for sticky paper and no mess. Try it...

Paul Sellers made a great video years ago where he sharpened a plane blade to 240 and it cut like butter. Seeing people use these 30,000 grit Japanese stones nakes me laugh. There's also a knife naker who useds a common ibstock house brick to sharpen all his knifes. I personally use my late grandfather's fine India stone 240 or 400 grit (I forget), then strop that puppy intil its shiny and jewel like.

I sharpen all my tools with sandpaper just like him, it work great and I don't have to stick it with spray adhesive, I just use duct tape. I don't even have 1000 grit sharpening stone, my stone is 120/500 combination stone and it works great after stropping.

Hand sharpening is fine if you enjoy it, but motorised sharpening is quicker. It takes seconds rather than minutes. I use a worksharp as the bevel can be set exactly the same every time. Also there’s no need to buy guides and jigs, which in the end makes it very cheap. I use diamond discs rather than sandpaper in it. I have a quick strop afterwards before I settle down to planing and chiselling. Keep up the humour please. I love it.

Stuby, I think you know this. Buy you wet and dry paper at the auto motive store and with the flat plate granite floor tile or the glass plate the paper will stick to the plate by spraying some water on the paper back and some on the plate. The surface tension of the water produces the bond. I do it all the time. Remember these important words KISS Kept it simple stupid. That's all I got for the moment. 60 yr and counting.

Ive spent hundreds of hrs sharpening my chisels and Kanna blades on just about everything cheap and easy. The crappy thing about sandpaper is that you cannot ever get the very most cutting edge bevel perfectly intersecting at infinity because the paper compresses at the cutting edge and curls up around the edge ever so slightly but rounds it off. Arkansas stones I've barrowed from friends are the only thing that works to my satisfaction and even then not Happy. saving up for some Japanese water stones.

Is it true that sandpaper wears smooth, thus becoming like a finer grit? Or do the abrasives dislodge, giving the same deepness of scratches but slower? Ive heard both. Has anyone put a microscope to this?

Depends on the sandpaper. Silicon Carbide breaks up, forming a finer grit. But since the fine grit is mixed with larger grit, it won't produce a finer edge.
