The new US Navy's $13 Billion Aircraft Carrier features a host of new and untested technology, including the ship’s two main turbine generators, a new dual-band radar system, advanced weapons elevators, and a new advanced arresting gear on the flight deck. U.S. President Donald Trump objected to the installation of some of the new systems such as General Dynamics’ new electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS) aboard the USS Gerald R. Ford.

@@michaelgoldsmith9359 You cannot compare WWII carriers with a Ford or even Nimitz class carrier. The number of planes is a meaningless metric when the planes are so different. An F-18 Is several times bigger and heavier than a Japanese Zero or US Hellcat. If we are talking size, the Shokaku class carriers had a max displacement of aprox 35 000 tones. Ford class goes up to 100 000 tones. But even that is a silly comparison. There are a million reasons why the Ford is so expensive but the bottom line is that there no point trying to compare a 1930s design to something from 2016.

i find it hilarious when China pretends like they can go toe to toe with the US in the air or at sea. They have a large army but they're navy is a joke, they brag about having an aircraft carrier when the US built their first carrier 108 years ago so the Chinese are a bit behind the game, they use designs like the sky jump deck that are almost never used by serious navies (the Queen Elizabeth being the only exception i know of since WW2), and they built it using Soviet scrap metal they had to lie to get from Ukraine. Those are the sorts of things you see from minor navies like Vietnam or Mexico, not world power navies.
@arthas640
@arthas640 3 жыл бұрын
@PCTech Guy the Brits used to have flat tops until recently with the Queen Elizabeth class, Frances is a flat top, Brazils is a flat top but it's a helicopter carrier so it has no use for a ramp, Russia uses mostly ramps because they traditionally have heavier planes and less reason to bother with a large navy (as well as lacking in naval tech since with the exception of their subs their navy is almost all defensive), india imported a Russian carrier so it has a ramp, Italy has 2 flat top carriers, Japan has flat tops, Spain has a ramp carrier, and Thailands carrier has a ramp. If you go by number of countries it's a fairly even split but if you go by raw ship numbers or tonnage then flat tops are more common, and the countries that operate flat tops are typically more advanced when it comes to naval tech since the flat tops are more complicated and usually require more work designing air craft that will work with them. The counties who've traditionally focused on flat tops are ones who've typically had a heavy focus on naval superiority (like France, Japan, UK, and of course the US) while the counties who've used ramps are usually "making do" with ramps to get a couple carriers in their fleets without investing too much. Even beyond their common political doctrine there's alot of parallels between the old Soviet Union and modern PRC. The USSR knew they couldn't compete at sea with the US/NATO so they used subs to avoid NATO ships and strike at random and focused alot on anti ship missiles to keep NATO at bay. They also wanted to at least give the illusion of a strong navy so they built some air craft carriers and capital ships that were mostly ineffectual with some being sort of "jack of all trades master of none" since they were too small or tried filling multiple roles like their Moska class that was part surface combat ship part helicopter carrier but not really good at either role. The Chinese meanwhile have their flag ship that was first a failed air craft carrier, then a pile of scrap, then was going to be a casino, then was smuggled into the country to be Jerry rigged into a capital ship... not the most prestigious or promising beginning especially since the chinese are just copying the soviet designs that as previously mentioned where kind of a mess and never designed to really compete with the US. Sorry I kind of went on a tangent there, I've partaken in the devil's cabbage and tend to ramble

And now with the F-35C proving itself as a distant/over the horizon sensor platform, the carrier battle group gets much more lead time in case any enemy launches "carrier killer" type missiles. The stealthy F-35 will likely have the ability to shoot them down. The Ford class carrier has huge power reserves planned in for future rail guns and laser defense systems as well.
@roberthudson1959

The only problem is that someone didn't design the Ford to launch the F-35C. Succeeding ships in the class will be able to do so, but Ford won't have that capability until her first refit in about 10 years.

I worked on a LNG plant Bechtel built for Chevron here in Australia. Bechtel dont mess around. I know they fired a guy during the initial induction process when he arrived on site due to his perceived poor attitude during the induction. He flew in one day and flew out the next. . Then I saw them fire their own project manager because he was caught in a compromising situation with a woman. There were 9000 people on the project. I saw them eject a entire sub contractor company from the project because of the behavior of a few of its employees. Just tore up their contract and told them to get out. I shudder at what their standards must be like in building and installing reactors in warships for the US Navy. I found their American managers treated the Australian guys on the tools very well but were extremely hard on the sub contractor management teams. You could smell the fear in the air when the Bechtel managers were around....🤣🤣🤣

@@sluggoman2551 You aren't very smart. Do you have any idea how many cruises sail every year? Do you have any idea how rare it is for there to be any problem at all? Do you have any idea how many accidents there are on the very small number of aircraft carriers there are? Obviously not. It is much much more dangerous to be on an aircraft carrier than any cruise ship.

It was also a nuclear carrier. VA 35 and VA 75 were stationed out of NAS Oceana, Virginia. One friend from VA 35 said the rooster tail was above the flight deck,, that's moving. The "Grumman" in Northrop-Grumman is pronounced with a short 'u' vowel sound, similar to the words 'sum' or 'plum' so it sounds more like "Gr-um-un." I served in the US Navy for twenty years, a portion of that time on three aircraft carriers, USS Nimitz, CVN-68, USS Abraham Lincoln CVN-72 and USS Harry S. Truman CVN-75. The US treasury in turn owes the “Federal Reserve” as well but I really don’t know how that happens. The USN currently operates 11 of the worlds 44 aircraft carriers. That is some scary firepower. I saw a theoretical design proposal for a monster carrier last year I think it was I was sitting around and googled carrier designs and they had a carrier that was pretty much two carriers put together with double sets of landing and launching strips the conning towers were two and moved to the center one up forward and one more toward the aft of the ship. Oh, and there were two secondary towers on the far side of the port and starboard and those were to keep the ships defensive systems out where they could watch and react to any inbound missiles or attacks large or small. All that was mounted on two hulls put together like catamarans, there was a small gap between the two monster hulls and you could both launch and recover planes at the very same time. Double drives and pretty much double the capacity. Everything on that sucker was gonna be over the top awesome. The GR Ford cost 13 billion so I would guess that would cast about double, maybe more since no one has a drydock for that puppy to side into. But I bet it would make Putin poop cement blocks.

I have the warriors of America in the highest regard, Tecumseh for me is a hero. There's the problem of the native Americans and the alcoholism, but I'm pretty sure that if the communities press the politicians, this issue will improve, now with the cassino's law the standarts of living have been improving, although I personally don't like gambling. You are a warrior, be proud of it, I know it's hard but it's time to fight for your people's future, so begin with education, health and the glorious memories of your ancestors, become a politician and look to new days to come. I know little about this topic, but I hope they have solid backup plans. Seems like a swarm of drones with EMPs could ground all aircraft, as opposed to a steam system. The exposed bridge seems an artifact of the past. Yes, it's very well defended, but eliminating risk entirely by hiding command below deck would be ideal. A suite of digital and analog sensor systems could ensure minimal loss of visibility. Again, I really have no background in this, and still think carriers are the coolest ships ever to sail!
