Hey sam, love the channel, i’ve been following for a while, i noticed that you tend to have a problem tapping and dying things, i truly believe it’s your method, from the little film of you doing it in these videos i notice you just sort of spin it in, that’s the root of bad threads and broken tools, you need to incorporate a half turn forward, quarter turn back, half turn forward, quarter turn back, method, i worked in a metal shop for 5 years and i never had issues like you have best of luck!!!!!

Hey Sam, I would recommend sealing the gap between the bottom of the fiberglass dodger and the deck. Once big waves come over it'll keep the cabin drier then it would be otherwise. Although if you have waves that big you'll have other problems but it should keep down water intrusion. Shouldn't take more than a tube or 2 of caulk. Something like OSI Quad Max

Nylon requires an enclosed cabinet to keep the heat. A draft can cause the bed to get a cold spot and the print will come loose.

That non-skid tape starts to come up at the edges and looks awful before falling off. Get the coarse "Soft Sand" and use it with gelcoat. For decks and other non-skid locations, I sand with coarse paper (40 grit or lower), tape off a one inch border and roll on gelcoat. Then sprinkle the soft sand stuff very liberally over the entire area. When the gelcoat hardens, sweep or vacuum up the excess sand. (empty the vacuum first so you can save the sand for next time) Then roll on another layer of gelcoat with the wax mixed in so this top layer fully hardens, locking the sand in place.

Looking at battery voltage to estimate state of charge might sort of work with lead acid but it definitely doesn't work with LiFePO4. You really just need to know how much current you're drawing and for how long. Just measure your motor's draw at different speed settings, then you can reliably estimate how long it should run at a particular speed setting

A cool anti-slip trick I learnt is to pour suggar on the paint (two comp.) and let it dry. After that you just clean it with warm water and the suggar will dissolve and leave a grippy surface behind.
@nearlynormal
@nearlynormal 3 жыл бұрын
The sugar method works well. Epson salts works the same way and is a little more coarse and cheaper. Then when it comes time to re-paint someday, you'll only be sanding paint, not imbedded sand.

It looks like your bed wasn't hot enough it should be around 65c or you'll have bed adhesion and warping issues. The filament not being completely dry can cause bed adhesion issues as well. Being that your filament came unsealed it may require a longer drying time. PLA is great but it degrades in uv so be careful where you stick it on your boat.

Just as a side note, the new Torqeedo models are silent now, like the outboard you've got here. I've got the 1103C one so I can confirm. Still much more expensive than yours here though! Personally I do fancy the epropulsion one, as that one can be placed in the normal running position during sailing, and can then generate enough energy to charge itself up! That seems like a winning combination. Good work Sam, love watching your videos and emulating your adventures & spirit, one sailing voyage at a time. Regards, Ben

If you're doing carbon Fiber, remember to raise the temp of your bed by about 10 degrees and your nozzle to around 270. Also make sure you have a stainless steel or ruby tipped nozzle. After that it should print alright :)

On the 3D printing, PLA+ and PETG are the only materials I’ve ever been able to print things in that are ready for any duty. For PLA+ I use 15 wall layers and 15 bottom layers, 100% infill, 55 on the plate and 230 at the nozzle. I can print just about anything, and it works just fine. Thingiverse has been really helpful, I find that most things I’m looking for are already on there.

I started with a stainless steel nozzle for nylon too but after fighting with it for months I switched to a plated copper and that did the trick. I dont think the steel can transfer enough heat quick enough, my layer adhesion was crap. I wasn't printing carbon fiber infused nylon so the carbon fiber filament may wear a plated copper nozzle out pretty quickly. Nylon is awesome though once you can get it to print!

Didn't the boat come with gunwales on the port and starboard sides? Did you remove them? That shallow cockpit looks like it would make for scary sailing on windy days. I guess I've been really spoiled sailing our Herreshoffs for so long that have such deep cockpits where you really sit IN the boat and your back leans against the coamings. With shallow cockpits it seems like a rogue wave could wash you overboard really easily. Of course the downside of a deep cockpit is there is more room for more water to more easily swamp the boat and it would take much longer to pump out.

I am following your footsteps in the 3D printing hobby having received my PRusa a few weeks ago. For now, I am sticking with PRusa’s brand filament since they have all been tested with our machines. I figured the learning curve to be somewhat steep and to introduce more variables ie unknown bed and nozzle / fan temp settings would be nuts. Currently waiting on a selection of PETG filaments and the MMU upgrade. Wasn’t thinking and ordered together. Ship times on their hardware is 3-4 weeks, so no playing with PETG until then. Are you planning on taking your 3D Printer on board with you? Pretty handy to have... but not the best environment for sure.
