his acting was so relaxed and natural, the way he holds himself and walks in the room, the subconscious scratching, the looks he's giving blanche, no actor did that before Brando, most actors just stuck to their dramatic theatrical acting

Seeing Vivien Leigh, an actress I absolutely adore, next to Brando is like watching two world collide. He is a natural. The way he talks, moves and just presents himself is so immensely different from what Leigh does. She is theatrical. You can hear it in her voice and the way she's moving. It's all dreamy and dramatic while he just happens to play it like something that could happen to any of us at any given time.

@georgebeierberkeley

@@banksy2870 I so agree. She can convey about 10 emotions in one sentence. Lust, haughtiness, fragility, tenderness. And of course he shatters her near the end of the movie. His beauty and sexual energy mask what is truly an awful character. Boith play the roles beautifully.
@goodhumourman

Blanche is someone who is “acting”… acting like this old-fashioned genteel person who is used to having lots of money, when in actuality she’s completely broke and her mental state is hanging by a thread. She doesn’t mumble and mutter the way Stanley does, but that’s their different characters. I think both actors brought out from the text just what was needed for their particular characters’ point of view

That's right, well spotted. This was a source of friction between Brando and Tandy during rehearsals of the original Broadway play. She couldn't stand him and actually wrote him a condescending letter scolding him about his "non-professional" acting style. It was also a clash between british acting philosophy (external, mannered) and american (internal, method)

I'll acknowledge Marlon's brilliance (and beauty) here but I think Vivien Leigh's performance in this film is truly unrivalled. As one of Britain's greatest actors, she really did nail this performance to the point that even Tennessee Williams said she delivered more than he could have imagined. Her anxiety, her mental uncertainty and her eventual demise is disheartening and as someone who's suffered from anxiety, she portrays the character perfectly. All hail Leigh and Brando.

Your response is true. She more than nails the tragedy of being a middle aged woman in the past who once used her beauty for currency, (social and financial) with no backup plan. A Disturbing portrayal that is a warning about a woman’s value, perhaps even today in some parts of the world.

Brando was not only beautiful, but the greatest actor ever. The first person to mainstream method acting. Any person who considers themselves a lover of cinema must sit down and watch A street car named Desire and On the Waterfront. Marlon moves and acts extremely natural in both films, and although the casts around him give great performances, it’s very much theatrical over-acting. Marlon actually became his character and was so much more convincing. He changed acting forever in A streetcar named Desire, and raised the bar once again in On the Waterfront.
