A portion of the proceeds from this song will be given to RAINN in solidarity with survivors. I wrote “18+” to be controversial and I hope that’s what I’ve achieved. When I wrote the song I made it my mission to make something that sounds like an intense personal call out but also broad enough that it covers an entire epidemic within the scene. Having people arguing over which band I might be upset with, arguing over security measures taken place in the scene, or even arguing whether the lyrics are good or just borderline unsettling is the exact point of the song: to get people talking about what we’ve refused to talk about in the scene the last ten years. When I left the scene around 2015, because it no longer felt like a safe space for women, I swore that if I ever came back I would make it my mission to set fires until it was safe. I alluded to this heavily on Bimbocore Vol. 2 with my song “The Rapture (but it’s Pink)” featuring Mothica, but “18+” is me finally making the first step into that. Predatory behavior is something that has been happening in the scene for years and still happens now. If I waited for the perfect time and the easiest way to start the conversation, I would never get the chance. Since writing this song I’ve been terrified. Will I be harder to book? How many bands will hate me? Etc. but I realized this exact fear is the reason there’s not many songs like this. And it’s the reason it keeps happening. Who better to start the conversation than someone living in the scene rn? I hope you all enjoy.

It’s so hard to explain to people who were never part of the pop-punk/emo/scenecore scene just exactly how pervasive grooming and sexual assault of underage fans was throughout the early 2000’s to early 2010’s, and how much of it was completely out in the open. ATL and their tour bus full of bras from (definitely mostly underage) fans always gave me a bad vibe, but myself and many others were hesitant to speak on our discomfort because being ostracized from the scene was such a real threat. Scene/emo/pop-punk/screamo/whatever you wanna call it- we all know these genres and this subculture attract young people who are feeling alone and hopeless, but all too often those kids end up being preyed upon instead of protected. Predators and groomers know they have an easy target in these kids, that’s what attracts them to this genre and this subculture. It’s about fucking time we start taking this scene back. Make predators afraid to show face at any show.

More like things you imagine to be true in your mind... If you understand basic biology it's often impossible to tell the difference between any girl aged 16-24. They are physically mature by 16 and don't show signs of aging until 24 (seriously, read a book). With all the fake ids floating around at shows it's not surprising that mistakes happen. If I was in a touring band I'd just never take a chance on someone who doesn't look at least 30, it just isn't worth the risk because people are just too stupid to understand biological reality these days, and people have forgotten what SA actually is. It's an insult to people who have actually been abused when they're kids (like me), and if you went through what I did you wouldn't be confused about it at all. The real thing is violent and traumatic, it stays with you for life, it's not like "oopsie, I'm not sure if I'm quite old enough for this but here's my fake i.d".

More like things you imagine to be true in your mind... If you understand basic biology it's often impossible to tell the difference between any girl aged 16-24. They are physically mature by 16 and don't show signs of aging until 24 (seriously, read a book). With all the fake ids floating around at shows it's not surprising that mistakes happen. If I was in a touring band I'd just never take a chance on someone who doesn't look at least 30, it just isn't worth the risk because people are just too stupid to understand biological reality these days, and people have forgotten what SA actually is. It's an insult to people who have actually been abused when they're kids (like me), and if you went through what I did you wouldn't be confused about it at all. The real thing is violent and traumatic, it stays with you for life, it's not like "oopsie, I'm not sure if I'm quite old enough for this but here's my fake i.d".

The overall message of the song, the way you sing it, and ALL THE MEAN GIRLS REFERENCES like you wearing Regina’s outfit, the yellow school bus, the cut shirt at the end to show off the bra; all the references were just the icing on the cake to a really powerful song that needed to be made in our day and age. I know you probably wrote this with your own message in mind, but if it’s alright; I’d like to share my interpretation of the song. This is from experience: it’s about sexual harassers, pedos, and rapists. And how they all seem to be rampant in both the entertainment industry and in regular life. As someone who put up with sexual harassment from a group of girls in middle school, and also got my ass smacked in highschool by strangers, the “slap on the wrist, no one gives a shit, it is what it is” line hit too hard. I can definitely say I don’t have the worst case, but it’s enough to scar. And your music hits so hard for me. I love what you’re doing and you have my full support, Scene Queen.
